Voted on by the players. Congrats Alexei. Your defense this year was superb.

Congrats to Alexei! Definitely one of KW's best signings.

Alright TCM!

Now, if you could just remember that the season starts in early April and not the end of May, you'd really be a hell of a player.

Congrats to Alexi and also to Joey Cora who has worked so hard with his middle infielders.

Glad to see the rest of the league realizes what a good SS Alexei is.

Congrats! :gulp:

Hopefully with more maturity comes better plate patience, but we saw some improvement in that this season.

Congrats to Alexei, and agreed that he was one of KW's best signings.

Here's hoping that KW will dump a boat anchor salary elsewhere in this team, and lock Alexei up for a longer-term contract. If memory serves, Alexei is only contracted through next season, yes?

His contract only goes through 2011, but he's under the Sox's control thanks to the arbitration process for 2012 and 2013.

I suppose that's good news. If Mark freakin' Teahen got his arb years bought out via an extension by KW, I certainly hope KW has the good sense to do the same for Ramirez.

[Of course, since KW stupidly gave Teahen $14M/3 years, what's TCM worth? $20M-$27M/3 years?]

And 'Coach' Omar Vizquel for tutoring him on the field.

Alexei is the most improved player on the roster over the past two years and one of my top favourites. I wish we could make him a franchise player and keep him long term. Does that even happen anymore?

Omar and PK are needed for one more year at third and first if only to give TCM and Beckham another year of their fine example.

The fact that he hasn't done well until June is an indicator of how good he actually is. Hopefully, he will improve his early hitting but I'd rather have it then than later.

No shock that he deserves the recognition, nice to see he got it...

Congrats Alexei! Where are all those who said he was the dumbest player in Sox history?

Congrats Alexei! Where are all those who said he was the dumbest player in Sox history?

Playing next to Abuelo Omar and his impeccable defensive prowess helped cut down those mental errors, I'm sure.

Besides, as long as Jose Paniagua is in Sox lore, TCM will never be close to being the dumbest player in Sox history.

Actually I always thought the "dumbest" in a baseball sense Sox player was Carlos Lee. I mean who can forget trying to steal 3rd base, not once, not twice but three times with the tying run at the plate in a two year span. He was thrown out two of the three times.

Of course as a sidenote you have to consider Manager Gandhi, who said he'd bench Lee for doing it...he benched him alright...one entire game.

Sigh.

I am hard pressed to name a better all around shortstop in baseball. I guess Tulo in Colorado. Andrus maybe, but he doesn't have the power.

Hanley?

Hanley?

Doesn't play defense.

Hanley?

Isn't there, or wasn't there talk of him moving to third base because he had put on some weight and lost a few steps defensively? I haven't seen Hanley play much, so I can't speak to his defense, but he is certainly in the discussion for best shortstop in the game.

Now that Alexei has improved so much KW could probably trade him even up for Juan Uribe. Get it done, Kenny!

2010 Season Stats
SPLITS G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
Uribe 148 521 64 129 24 2 24 85 45 92 1 2 .248 .310 .440 .749
TCM 156 585 83 165 29 2 18 70 27 82 13 9 .282 .313 .431 .744

About the same offensively, but Uribe is still a much better defensive shortstop (and 3B and 2B).

Doesn't play defense.

Ah yes. I forgot to consider that in the "all-around" category

Present.

Alexei improved greatly as the season progressed, but the first few months of season were rough, both offensively (expected) and defensively (not expected).

He made some great plays and finished the season strong, but he's still prone to losing concentration and making a big mistake. Hopefully after a solid stretch run he's finally turned the corner.

Still prone to loss of concentration? Did not see any evidence of that this whole year.

Uribe is better defensively? No. Juan is good, but Alexei is better.

Do I wish that Juan was at third base for the Sox this year over Teahen? Absolutely.

Alexei is definitely a solid player. I can't wait for the year when heats up earlier. Then I'm thinking he'll get the votes for a real All-Star game.

I'd agree with that assessment for 2009, but not this year...I think his defense completely stabilized by May, then got better and stayed at a very high level.

Oh that's nuts. Alexei not only by visual measure but by the geekiest of stats was a great defender this year...

Alexei's dWAR was only 0.9, which is good, but not great. Skot's correct, I distinctly remember Alexei having his trademark mental lapses the first few months of the season. It really wasn't until Omar started playing 3B everyday did he start playing like an All-Star.
