They never should have fired Wakamatsu.

And another guy pulls his hat from the ring of the dream job that is manager of the Cubs.

I think the Mariners have a fascination with ex-Cleveland managers. Actually, to extend it further, perhaps they love ex-Ohio managers.

As a Mariner fan, I couldn't agree more, he ended up being the scape goat when he tried to bench over paid players that weren't doing their jobs.

I agree that Wakamatsu was scapegoated and that they should have kept him but what is with the Eric Wedge hate? He did ok in Cleveland considering their payroll limitations. They had pretty good runs in 2005 and 2007. They didn't really hit the wall until they started trading away Cliff Lee, CC Sabathia, and others.

What will be interesting now, maybe you know this, will be why they didn't go after Valentine. Some feel that his outgoing personality would take power from the team president Chuck Armstrong and Lincoln. After 7 managers in 8 years, clearly this team is awfully run.

This absolutely bears repeating. I don't follow the Mariners, but by all accounts he wasn't given jack crap to work with.

He'll get a job somewhere, someday and I think he'll be very successful.

In all seriousness, I always thought of Wedge as a poor manager. Regardless, this is a thoughtless retread hire by the Mariners. It doesn't matter though, because that team is very far from competing at this time.

I was listening to WFAN in New York last Friday. Mike-- less mad Dog-- said strong rumor in NY was that Girardi will be next Cub manager if Yanks go all the way. Cashman said Yanks will worry about it after season. Probably makes sense.

Given that the M's have lost over 100 2 of the last 3 years (and even though they had a winning record in '08, they were still 12 games out of first), you'd have to think that management ain't the problem...

That very well could be the reason they shied away from Valentine. Many M's fans (myself included) feel that as long as Lincoln and Armstrong are around the M's are going nowhere. They care more about making money than winning. It's as if they don't realize that a winning team will bring in more money. Seattle supports its teams, they just support them more when they are winners.

Great. I wonder who they will hire this time next year?
