I would be totally fine seeing the Braves, Giants, Reds, or Rays win the World Series. The Phillies and Rangers I'm indifferent about. And absolutely, under no circumstances, do I want to see New York or the Twits win it. So...

1. Atlanta
2. San Fransisco
3. Cincinnati
4. Tampa Bay

5. Philadelphia
6. Texas

7. New York

A big steaming pile of ****

Minnesota winning it all would make it interesting for all the towering baseball intellects around here that insist you can't compete without dumping money on draft picks or signing top dollar free agents to explain how they did it.

They actually haven't won a playoff series, ever- even in Washington.

In Washington, they were an expansion team at the end of the Yankees' pre-amateur draft dynasty before divisional play. They were in the AL East for three seasons when the Orioles were the dominant team in the league. One wouldn't expect the second Washington Senators to have gone to the postseason.

Of the first-round of expansion teams in the early 1960s (replacing teams that move from D.C. and New York, putting a second team in Los Angeles and a new team in Houston, the Rangers are the only franchise that hasn't made it to the World Series. The second round of expansion at the end of the 1960s were the Padres, Expos, Royals and Pilots, of which only the Expos, now Nationals, have not made it to the World Series. From later expansion, the Mariners have not made it to the World Series, but the Blue Jays have; and the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Rays and Marlins (the Marlins twice winning the World Series and sending the bench coach to manage the White Sox).

The Rangers are only about half a century old. The only older teams that have gone longer without winning a World Series (they are a year older than the Colt 45s-turned Astros) are the Giants (1954) the Indians (1948) and the Cubs (1908). The other 13 original franchises have won the World Series in the expansion era. The Pirates haven't won since 1979, and I believe they have the fourth-longest drought among the 16 franchises at the dawn of the modern era.

I hope I live long enough to see the Indians celebrate a century without winning the World Series. Maybe the Giants' drought will end this year. Considering more Hall of Famers have played for the Giants than any other team, the drought isn't a result of a losing tradition.

As the playoffs open tonight I find myself in the uber-strange position of rooting for the Yankees in their series vs. the Twinks. Despite my years of detesting the Bombers, my recent wounds suffered at the hands of the Twins have driven me into the arms of the Yankees. After Minnesota is safely dispatched, however, I will resume my normal anti-Gotham rooting ways.

Overall, I'm somewhat conflicted in my rooting interest. I like the cut of the Rays' jib, but the Rangers could stand a little success. In the NL, I guess I'm kinda pulling for Bobby Cox to maybe get one more trophy in this, his final year--a reward for a great managing career.

In the National League, I guess I'm for the Braves because I have the least amont of issues with them among the NL playoff teams.

I've never had a problem with the Yankees, so I'm rooting for them over the Twins. I could go either way on the Rays/Rangers, after that I'd like to see whoever wins beat the Yankees. In the NL, I'm rooting for the Giants because I've always liked them.

My breakdown is like this Sox first, then AL Central then AL. I root for the Sox and then if and when they're eliminated then I root for the AL Central team. If the AL Central team is eliminated I'll root for the AL team.

After this season, it's really tough for me to cheer for the Twins.

I'm rooting for a Twins v. Giants WS. I'm hoping that if the Twins win the WS, they will be less hungry next season. Hey -- it's all I got! Giants fans are the most deserving (i.e. have suffered the longest) of the NL playoff teams. Plus, I'd like to see Uribe (and Rowand) back in the Series. Uribe is so unconventionally effective. I love watching him play.
