They should both tell the Yankees to kiss their kiesters, but they probably won't.

Why?

Why?They insulted Torre with an offer of a one-year contract at a pay cut, hoping he'd say no, despite all the success he had there. Mattingly left after not being offered the manager job when Torre left. Now the Yankees want to make nice.

There are two sides to that story. The yanks as baseball is a business. They did what they thought would better the team. So far their decision has seemed to work.

It was a relationship that was ending(torre/cashman). Add the steinbrenner kids having thier say in the matters didnt make it easier.

Torre and George had a decent relationship from what I hear. And Torre did say he talked to George quite a bit before he died

Then have the courage to simply tell Joe "we're going in a different direction; thanks for everything." Take the responsibility for the decision of not wanting him back.

Instead they gave him a low-ball one-year offer that they believed he would turn down so they could say they offered to let him stay, but he decided to leave. It was insulting.

Torre was offered less because his contract expired and the team did not meet ownerships expectations. Actually if the team would have won the World Series in 08 Torre would have made the same as in the last year of his previous contract, 8M, after incentives, if he resigned with the yanks.

Having ones salary cut, should not be an insult. His job and salary was not based on seniority but based on performance and ownership expectations.

Why shouldn't the Yankees make nice? The Sox and Fisk parted on less than amicable terms and eventually made up. Torre was an important part of the franchise and the Yankees are smart to try to make ammends.

The monument is MUCH bigger than Ruth's. As a local reporter said it is the 'end of modesty'.
