View Full Version : So, How Do They Play Out the String?

Now that 99.9% of Sox fans have accepted the grim statistical reality that the team is done for 2010, how do you think the Sox will fare in their remaining 18 games?

Phil Rogers in his column from late last night (the 14th) seems to think the Sox have a great shot at winning 90+ games yet.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/ct-spt-0915-rogers-white-sox-chicago-20100914,0,994163.column

The question then is-do you think that the current 2010 Sox will continue to gut it out, put on a bit of a salary-drive/keep-me-on-the-roster push, or fold their tents and go home?

I want to see Morel at 3rd everyday to see what he's got. That's all I really care about now.

I am interested to see a preview of 2011. Let's see the youth and figure out what we have to do to fix this for next year.

The way Minnesota is playing, they're going to wrap this thing up pretty soon and then the Sox will rattle off a bunch of meaningless wins.

I would also like to see 2 of Morel, Dayan, and Flowers in the lineup everyday from here on out. Let's see what these kids got.

I don't care how they finish.

90 wins means nothing to me. They'll probably shut down Jenks and Quentin soon since they are all but goners after this season. Morel should play every day, but the final record doesn't matter.

I'll take 90 wins. Sure it's nothing compared to a playoff spot, but it's still a milestone. If the Sox can do this, then they'll join the 2006, 1990, 1977, and 1972 (actually I'm pro-rating them to 91 wins because of a strike shortened season) as Sox teams that won 90 games and failed to make the playoffs in the division era. (Yayyy!!!)

Interestingly, if the Sox win 89 games they'll finish with a better record than the division-winning 2008 team.

I don't get this idea that, if we don't make the playoffs, I don't care if we win 90 or 60 games. If that's how people feel, then just turn off the TV and log off of WSI until spring training.

Give me as many wins as possible. I like seeing the Sox win.

If that's directed at my post, I didn't say I didn't care if they won 90 or 60.

I don't care if they win 86 or 90, but I certainly wouldn't want them to win 60 games. It was a good thing they played meaningful games into September. That's a lot better season than if they were 10 games out at the break.

The thing is, a lot of people have/will say that. My first season as a Sox fan was 1985. They were a decent team that won 85 games. The next four seasons? They lost 90 games three of the four seasons, and it took a 22-9 finish in Sept/Oct to avoid four straight. Um, this season, was much more enjoyable than four seasons.

I hate losing to the Twins as much as the next guy, but they are 40-16 since the All-Star break. Laying down to them was a viable claim in years past (especially in 2003), but it's not the case this season. People just have to admit the Twins are just simply a better team. No one seemed to be afraid to admit that in April and May... They've kicked the crap out of the rest of the division, and the Sox failed to do this.

As for the thread, I'm all for improving the team. However, I do not believe in firing someone just to fire them, at least in this case. Find someone better, than by all means, do it.

I've got them at 11-7, leaving them at 90-72.

Don't care - play the kids. Last night was such a let down - I'm still numb

Seven or so more wins, a respectable 86 win season.

Jenks pretty much for sure---but TCQ gone? Not saying that I would be broken up about it......but I might be a bit surprised if the Sox do non tender

Once this series is over, I to echo wanting to see some of the younger guys playing. We need to see what our young guys can do right now in the MLB atmosphere.

I don't think Quentin will be non-tendered, but I think he will be traded. He should be traded as he should have SOME value.

Scherzer and Verlander are on one of my fantasy teams, and they go against the Sox on Friday and Saturday. I am in the semi-final round right now and could win $300.

I'm sorry if it makes me a bad Sox fan. But since there's no chance for the post season now, I'll be rooting for Scherzer and Verlander in those games. It's $300, and I could use that. The Sox winning those 2 games does nothing for them, or me.

Other than that, I'd say....

-Give a bunch of rest to veterans that will be back next year.

-Let Manny DH everyday. We don't owe him anything. But he did waive his no-trade to come here, so I'd at least give him the opportunity to show GM's if he has anything left.

-Play the kids. Let's see what they've got.

That's it. I still enjoy watching the Sox games, even though the season is dead. And I love the post-season, no matter who's in it. Baseball is the best.

Just to be accurate, it's not a statistical reality that they're done. It is a reality, for sure.

I want the Sox to be about 2 or 3 games out when the season ends so everyone can really have a field-day blaming Thome's walk-off, the other blown game, and Joe West for the Sox not winning this year. It will be great, and humerus to watch.

Shocked if they finish any better than 5 or less out....shocked

I think that now the Sox will get swept by Minnesota but I have hope that we can rally off 11 more wins somewhere and get 90.
