The weather has not been kind to the Sox this second half.

We lost our best starter because of rain in KC which led to a horrible double header.

Now we have a double header in Boston. This is gonna be tough.

If Harrell throws strikes and keeps the ball down, he can successful. At least a heck of a lot more successful than Torres.

I hope they go with the latter. Detroit isn't a difficult lineup to shut down, give the ball to Harrell.

EDIT: On second thought, I think Scherzer pitches on Wednesday, so that's a tough decision that I'm glad I don't have to make.

EDIT: On third thought, I have no idea what I'm talking about, Scherzer just pitched on Wednesday, so he's due up again on Monday.

Yeah, he looked good in that outing against the Yankees. When he's not trying to stretch it out for 5-6 innings, he can dial it up. Cell gun had him in the mid-90s.

Might have a career as a serviceable reliever.

Didn't they both have good outings the last time they started?

I think they have to go with one of these two, or quick hook on Danks, having these two ready.
Really stinks that the weather messes up Coops carefully laid out plan for the rotation the rest of the year. Do we really want Danks starting that first game of the Twins series after working on short rest the start before?

PS: any word on TV coverage?

He was getting it up there in his start, as well. It's a pretty good fastball with good movement. The rest of his stuff is pretty meh.

At the least, he's ahead of Torres on the depth chart, which is a great thing considering his outs are long fly balls.

Johnny Danks on 95 pitches probably gets him through five innings. That would be a total waste. I say go with Harrell and forget about pitching Danks on short rest.

Why screw up multiple games as was the case with Javier Vasquesz in 2008?

One can have a macho mentality about it but some guys are just not cut out for the short rest routine.

If he's on, he's going to get more than 5 innings with 95 pitches.

Sox honestly need to wait and see what happens before then. It's possible the Sox have a good weekend, the Twins have a bad one, and they're in a virtual tie by Wednesday. In that case, there's no reason to overwork Danks, or it's probably going to bite them in a couple weeks.

On the plus side for Danks, we have an off day the following Monday which means he would have 5 days of rest between those starts. They could also flip him and Gavin for another extra day.

If we get the same result out of Harrell again this time, that would be sweet. However, I think I'd be more comfortable with Danks on short rest.

I am ticked at Hurricane Earl though for ruining my plans of watching the game today. One of the best parts of being up in IL was going to be the ability to watch more Sox games than I can see in FL.

Add to that the fact that the Sox face the AL Pitcher of the Month in the first game(Bucholz,ERA .41 in August),and the Sox not only have gotten no breaks, but they have absolutely hissed off the Baseball Gods, clearly.

I know some fans think we are whining, but I guess 3 doubleheaders in a month is just standard stuff that every team has had,and it is still on Kenny or Ozzie because of their DH plan...talk about whining.

Did it even rain in Boston last nite? I heard it missed Boston and they could have played. The irony: in KC they start a friday nite game with storms 9 minutes away, causing the Sox to lose their best pitcher for a start, and forcing a doubleheader that lasted til 1 oclock the next nite. Then in Boston they cancel a game 4 hours early,it never does storm, and they get another doubleheader. Christ is right. I know, no such thing as a bad break as long as it is the Sox.They deserve what they get due to kotsay.

Yep, this team controlled its own destiny and laid an egg after the all-star break.

If this team is tired it's because they are seemingly incapable of having a nice comfortable win. Even wins where we jump out to an early lead often end in nail biters we let our opponent right back into the game.

If the "baseball gods" hate us, then we must have angered them with our crappy play since mid-July.
