The bullpen implosion continues.

Ugh, dadgummit. I liked what I saw in Threets in what little playing time he got here and now he gets injured. Oh boy, let's brace ourselves for no control meltdowns.

Well maybe our starters can go eight innings every day.

Kenny's probably wishing he claimed Fuentes now.

This team's set-up duties now rest on the shoulders of Sergio who has struggled of late. Well, that's not really fair to say, the entire bullpen has been struggling of late. Backing Sergio as the LH set-up man is now Sale.

Meanwhile, Bobby is still closer. Thankfully he's at least shown some improvement.

Hopefully everyone gets healthy for what I hope will be a playoff run.

Unbelievable. Our guys are dropping like flies.

Threets looked pretty freakin' good in his time up here. Here's to a speedy recovery. :gulp:

I can't imagine how frustrated Threets must be .. torn ligament right when you get your big chance and you're doing well .. oh well move on with Harrell and Torres

How did the Sox not try to put in a claim on Fuentes. Unreal that there is now one lefty in the pen, and he was in college less than 4 months ago. Fuentes would have been more valuable than Ramirez will be if they end up with him. They won't go anywhere without a bullpen.

They planned on using Threets and didn't have anyone with precognition to see he would be hurt yesterday?

Supposedly they claimed Trevor Hoffman and they may have claimed Scott Downs. Can't claim everybody...

Plus, my understanding is that Fuentes is owed $2 million for the rest of this year and $9 million for next year (for a vest option that has already kicked in).

How much extra salary are the Sox going to take on? We're not the Yankees.

Needless to say they need to claim an arm from somewhere and get his ass to Chicago (and I don't mean Torres...)

That's just not true. He is owed $1.5MM for the rest of the year (1/6th of $9MM salary) and he nowhere near vesting the option for nest year. He has only appeared in 40 games this year (not sure on finishes) and since he wouldn't be closing here he wouldn't reach the needed 55 GF to have it vest.

I stand corrected then. I'm pretty sure I read that his option for 2011 has vested.....but of course that source could have been wrong.

****, dude, get over it, they didn't claim an average, expensive lefty specialist before Threets' injury. At the time, we had bigger fish to fry. Hopefully we put the claim on one of the Jays' relievers, who are better than Fuentes anyway.

It's sad when an up and coming superstar like Strasburg gets cut down by injuries, but it's even sadder when a guy like Threets, whose put in his time, ridden in buses all over the country, and made all sorts of sacrifices for his baseball career gets cut down just when he started tasting success in the Show. Really feel bad for the guy and, of course, our imploding bullpen.

That said, at least on the positive side, Harrell looked effective tonight. He's obviously never going to cut in the Majors as starter except on ****ty teams, but when he's only asked to throw 1-2 innings, he can really dial it up there. He was hitting the mid-90s tonight and that fastball that struck Jeter out was pure filthy. Maybe he can keep his **** together for a month? Is that too much to ask? :praying:

He's way better than average and not at all a lefty specialist.

...

I feel much worse for Threets than I do for Strasburg. Threets was a seventh-round draft pick of of the Giants a decade ago. He's pretty much been making minor league money or pretty close to the major league minimum. He has been up to the majors before, performing poorly briefly for Giants teams going nowhere in the standings. He was having what could have been his breakthrough season at 28, pitching out of the bullpen in a pennant race. He probably won't be able to come back until he's about 30. IF he threw right-handed (and were having the surgery on his right arm), his career might be over.

I don't feel bad at all for Strasburg. He's already had a huge payday and he's still young enough that he could be back to form in a couple of years.

Yeah, we already know you hate Stephen Strasburg and are on some ridiculous personal vendetta to try and prove to everyone that he sucks.

Keep trying, though, maybe if you post the exact same thing another 1,000 times someone will find it informative and not super ****ing annoying.

Since Threets was injured pitching in the majors, does he get paid a major-league salary while he's rehabing?

Absolutely. I feel really bad for him, too. All those struggles, all that adversity to overcome just to make it to the majors, and then he actually starts seeing the payoff from all that investment with some success, and then it's taken away in the blink of an eye.

He gets paid a major league salary (presumably the minimum) for as long as he is on the disabled list.

I don't hate Strasburg. I never said he sucks. But I don't think he was worth the money, not this year, and as it turns out, not next. I thought it was ridiculous that people would suggest Kenny Williams would be stupid not to trade Gavin Floyd and John Danks for him. But there are people in baseball that don't make money until they earn it. I feel sorry for those guys.

I didn't bring up Strasburg in this thread. I only offered that the Threets injury is sadder than the Strasburg injury.

I don't feel sorry for Kerry Wood or Greg Prior either. I feel sorry for people who worked hard and sacrificed and paid their dues and get injured just when they appear to be on the verge of making it. Threets' career might be over for all he put into baseball.

If you care about the humanity of the game, Threets was one of those guys you had to cheer for.
