Except for playing Blackjack in the casinos I'm not much of a gambling man. I have always been confused on the odds in the daily newspaper.
Tonight the odds on the Sox game are 8-9 with the Sox as favorites. Is that based on a $5 bet, so if you take the Sox you bet $8 to win $5 and if you take the Os you bet $5 to win $9? I have a hunch thats how it works but I'm not sure.

Most people don't talk like that anymore. Usually you'll see something like:

White Sox -175 (bet 175 to win 100)
Orioles +160 (Bet 100 to win 160)

I believe your assumption is correct though.

And dime lines are very hard to find at the higher odds.
