Has there ever been a major leaguer with a somewhat successful career that after retiring became an umpire? I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything.

During a game last week, Ed Farmer actually mentioned someone who did that, but I cannot remember the name.

Ed Walsh Sr. of the White Sox retired then the following season became an umpire. He only lasted one year but he did do it.

Probably the best players to become umpires (for any length of time were George Pipgras and Lon Warneke, both former pitchers. Complete list: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/umpires/umpireswhowereplayers.shtml
