View Full Version : 8/29 Frank Thomas Day

I noticed that MLB doesn't have anything listed for a national broadcast [either TBS day game at 1pm, or moving it to a night game for ESPN] for Sunday, August 29. Is there any chance this game gets moved? If it does get moved, then I can head down to Atlanta for a bachelor party. If not, then I'm sticking with the game.

Does anyone know if the game is up for being moved to a night game, and if so, when that decision has to be made? Thanks.

ESPN is not listing anything yet for that particular Sunday 8/29. I checked the schedule and Sox vs. Yankees is one of the more attractive matchups that Sunday. The other likely games possibly picked up could be Rays vs. Red Sox or Phillies vs. Padres. I personally hope that game is picked up by ESPN. Frank Thomas's # retirement deserves the national exposure.

Ugh. ESPN is playing havoc with my vacation travel plans with this Sunday night flex-game announced 2 weeks beforehand garbage. Just pick a game and be done with it.

I hope the Frank Thomas game and the game I hopefully can see in Boston on 9/5 will remain day games.

I agree. I'm not sure if they'd show the ceremony nationally though. I do know ESPN does a ton of broadcasting before the game, on the actual field. So its possible.

Even if they don't show the ceremony live, they will certainly cut to highlights of it in between innings, probably have the Big Hurt in the booth for an inning or two, and maybe even show some highlights from his career.

It would be wonderful, IMO. Just the fact that people seem to agree that he is a no-doubt 1st ballot HOF now really makes me happy. You deserve every accolade coming your way, Frank.

Did Frank play for the Red Sox or Yankees? Nope.
Did he cause either team to lose a game at least once? Yup.
Does ESPN want to glorify him? Not likely.

I'm sure they blame him personally for destroying Scott Kamienieki's career that one time in 1996. So now they have their revenge.

There has to be a deadline as to when they pick the game, anyone know when that is?

Driving to the mistake by the lake the next day for the 3 game series. Could make for a long drive if this is a night game. Friend of mine is planning a bus trip to this Yankees game.

So did anyone notice at the Cell that the left field wall has been repainted in anticipation of Frank's number being retired? The new depictions of the players whose numbers have been retired look a lot better than the old ones. Frank's image is behind the covering where The Catch is marked.

I'm so looking forward to going to that game!

I saw that on Tuesday at the game. They replaced the stencil type drawings of the players with photograph type pictures. The new pic look nice. Jackie Robinson (so far) is still a stencil. I was a bit surprised they moved everyone to the left to make room for #35 between Pierce and Fisk. I thought Walgreens and Fisk would get moved to the right so Pierce would remain under The Catch. It was very appropriate that The Catch was made at Pierce's now former location since he lost a perfecto with one out to go on a bloop double that fell just inside the line.

With only 10k bobbleheads, don't be surprised if the lines are ridiculously long by 10:30. I remember several years back when they did the Fisk bobbleheads we thought we were getting there early enough and we did not get them. They only gave away 10k then too, and the lines were just unreal.

10 minutes before first pitch. Except for when Burls pitches, then it's 20 minutes so you don't miss the first three innings.

Yeah, yet they're giving away 20,000 Stanley Cups tonight.

Is there a better gate to enter through to increase the odds of getting the illusive bobblehead? I was at gate 5 last night for the Stanley Cup replicas and it seemed they had a ton. Sometimes, when I go through gate 3, they don't have a lot of the giveaways. I just wonder if they ration them out based on how many people they expect through each gate.

When they charge $349 for a room on a weekend night, they should pay for my ticket and beer as well.

And give you free extra meat on your burrito.

Damn, I was hoping the teal bled through, sorry....

Don't worry. Happens to me all the time.

Happy Frank Thomas Day! Been up for an hour now. Getting excited about going to the game. The feeling is close to how I feel on opening day. I'm going to get there early and buy my wife a Thomas jersey. Today is the beginning of our road trip to Cooperstown to see him go into the hall. We are making a scrap book starting today and fill it until that great day in July of 2014.

I always enter thru gate 5, turnstile furthest west. I was there Friday as well, got "the cup" around 6pm. It looks like if you enter thru the TBD sports bar you may increase your chances.

Yep. White Sox - Yankees will be the TBS game:

http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=cws

Comcast users, I have a question: I can't watch the game today (gonna watch my own son play), so I want to record it and the pregame stuff. Excuse my ignorance about this, but if TBS carries the game, does that mean it won't be on CSN on Comcast?

The Sox schedule says CSN/TBS is carrying the game. Comcast shows the game on both CSN *and* TBS.

I will record the pregame ceremonies on CSN HD. But should I DVR the game on CSN or TBS? I (hope it's CSN cuz I don't think we get TBS in HD.)

It still amazes me that the Sox made Frank Thomas day AND Blackhawks day for the Yankees series. A series that will draw anyway.

However, with pro-Yankees crowds like last night.

What are the chances that MLB.tv will carry the ceremony? I just looked on whitesox.com and mlb.com and saw no indication. Eh, guess I'll start trying around cermony time and hopfully get lucky.

What sucks even more about this is there will be "Yankees" fans that get the big Hurt Bobble heads and probably sell them on ebay. I say the Sox don't give one to anyone wearing anything Yankees on Sunday.

It be nice if they weren't Frank fans if they would politely decline. I know that's highly unlikely however.

I actually thought the lines were very orderly once the gates opened. I expected chaos and a stampede, but there were just a very minimal amount of people cutting in line. I was happy to get a bobblehead. I didn't think I would when I arrived and the lines were already very deep.

Congrats to Frank. A great day despite the loss.

Got to Gate 5 this morning at 9:15. Was about one of six people waiting, was one of the first through the gates. They absolutely botched the situation with the TBD bar. They opened the bar at 11am and let people in, to let them line up inside to get bobbleheads. So that led to some people jumping from the back of the line to inside there, with the gates not opening until 11:15. The gate staff then changed their minds, and started turning some people away after one of the people in line pitched a fit, effectively bumping some people to the back since they lost their place. Was ready for the stampede at that point but it ended up being civil.

Good day overall besides the result of the game. Ended up meeting DumpJerry, Spawn, and ChiSoxGirl behind me in line so they helped passed the time. Good to meet you guys if you see this.

His generosity for a valet friend of mine let directly to a great night out. He practically paid for it. Good guy. I've heard that from lots of service people who have crossed paths with him.

Gate 5 was chaos. I must have been right behind you guys.

Right before I got in, there was a huge argument because one fan had TWO tickets, so he thought he was entitled to two bobbleheads. Not sure if I agree with him or not, as there's a line of thinking that he should have gone back out and entered into line (at the end of the line) in order to get the 2nd one.

Then, when I was inside, I saw a couple of guys complaining to Guest Services because one of the workers at Gate 5 was somehow giving extra bobbles away. They had taken a picture of her on their phone, and Guest Services and Sox Security were going to go down and check it out.

And, I saw the entire TBD's fiasco go down too.

I also saw a bunch of guys rush up and cut into line as the gates opened. As much as you want to bitch-slap people for this kind of behavior, it's not worth the confrontation that's going to happen.

I was at gate 5 as well about 25 people deep on the stairwell side. I also saw the tbd fiasco, i agree with the staff not letting people enter into the park through TBD, as people were trying to outsmart the system which sucks for everyone else that was in line before them. All in all a wonderful day despite the outcome of the game.

Did anybody else see the mess near section 115ish when one guy was sprinting after a shirtless guy and shouting for somebody to stop him?? This drunk guy swiped the bobblehead out of this guys hands and then continued to dart through the concourse and back into the seats. In the meantime he pitched the bobblehead in a garbage can when he got caught by the guy and by a concessions server. I didn't stick around to see the rest of the mess, but somebody garbage picked the bobblehead and gave it back to the rightful owner.

Does anyone here know who is the person in the red Sox hat? About 15 minutes before the gates opened, he is the one who went to the gate to yell at the employees about the people in line in TBD's. He was very forceful in his whining about why he thought it was "not fair" that some people were able to get in line at TBD's because, he felt incorrectly, that they did not wait as long to get in. He completely intimidated the Sox staff into telling the people in line at TBD's they had to get in the regular line, which was not verrrryyy long if they wanted a bobblehead. This guy then got back to his place in line which was less than 100 people from the gate! He was getting a bobblehead regardless of how many people were in line in TBD's! He entered the stadium less than one minute after the gates opened.

The problem is that the people who went into TBD's didn't really do anything wrong. The bar opened at 11, so people filed in. Then they realized you could get bobbleheads entering through there.

Guy in the red hat came running up to the gates asking for a manager, telling them how it's unfair that because a bunch of people waited longer. Keep in mind, I'm the second guy in line, Dump and Spawn are one behind me, and this guy was like six back from the front. He was probably one of the first 20 people in the park.

The Sox staff then said "Well, this guy said this was unfair, so we should listen to him. Sorry folks, if you came into TBD's, you go to the back of the main line now. Mr. Red Hat said so."

I saw people go into TBD's and immediately get into line to get a bobblehead. TBD's is a beer garden for people who want to drink before the game. It's not the express-lane for bobbleheads. The only thing the Sox staff blew was not having the foresight to see this would be a problem.

Again, perhaps the guy in the red hat didn't come across politely, but his point seems pretty fair, and I've got no problem with him advocating for the people who were in line behind him since 9:30 am.

Edit- I will add, I agree with you that perhaps people going into TBD's weren't doing anything wrong since there was no rule established yet about this. For that, I'll give them credit also for being creative, albeit, jackasses. I think we both agree the Sox blew it...but we disagree on the reasoning.

It's not the job of the guy in the red hat to be the line police either and to bitch and moan until he got his way, especially when he's going to be one of the first twenty or so to get one. If the Sox want to give away bobbleheads inside the bar area, that's their business, not his.

It's one of those things you had to be there to see, because the people in the bar who got in line to be told they had to go all the way to the back now, isn't right either.

The whole thing went down within 15 feet of me. The guy was in the wrong. Before they opened up TBD's, the Sox staff set up a few boxes of the bobblehead's next to the gate people use to enter the stadium from TBD's, so it was clearly ok to use TBD's until Mr. Whine took it upon himself to yell at the staff. He took an extremely passive aggressive approach to the situation by waiting until the last minute to whine knowing there would not be enough time to get higher management on the scene to tell him to get a life. Based on where he was relative to my position in line, he was there over an hour. People were lined up for over 20 minutes inside TBD's before he whined. They were lined up outside TBD's for about an hour before it opened.

Exactly. The gates didn't open earlier for the people in TBD. The gates were opening at 11:15. TBD opend at 11:00 and was another point of entry into the park. I'm pretty sure if people knew that there was another entry into the park via TBD, people would've lined up at that entrance as well. These people did nothing wrong. as Twentywontowin said, blame this one on the staff. From what we were told, people were able to line up at that entrance on Friday night to get the miniature Stanley Cup trophy. So now, Mr. Red Cap thinks this is usupring the system. The only thing these people did wrong was try and take advantage of the loophole in entrance into the park that the park staff inadvertently put in place.

And it was extremely classy of his little group to applaud the people that were made to go to the end of the main line once the park staff decided not to allow people through the TBD entrance. As has been mentioned...it was a ****ing bobblehead, not an autographed jersey, or baseball, etc.

Edit: Twentywontowin and Dump must've posted the same time I did, as I am now beating a dead horse.

The disdain for those people could not be described.

"Look, our buddy told on you guys, let's cheer because you got ****ed out of a bobblehead!" HAHA!"

Could have sworn we were in line to get rations with the way they were acting. Me first, or I'm going to starve!

Lining up was a real mess all around. The two long lines were really just for thousands. Thousands upon thousands showed up later and just skipped the line and went right to the gate. It is sad that secularity did not care, and that the Sox had no crowd control at all.

Molded pieces of plastic with a moving appendage are apparently a very hot commodity in Chicago.

If someone inside would have offered me a beer for mine, I would have traded it. I was only there because my buddy insisted on getting one and being early.

I certainly agree. People love their material possessions. Now it OK to want it and think its cool. But life to is too short to worry about bobbleheads. The Sox did handle it horribly though.

I would have on the spot, Miller Lite for my bobblehead.

Or on the flip side, you could be my buddy who desperately paid some guy $40 for his Nick Swisher bobblehead in the park in 2008. Think of all the beer we could have bought with that $40.

Why can't they just do what the hawks do, same magazine for a month and have a few rotating covers and on special events make a special cover...I really think Brooks blew it in the merchandise department all they had were 2 poorly designed tshirts and jerseys...they could have made baseballs or hat pins, baseball cards or at least a game day program

I was at Gate 5 super early, too, so I saw the whole mess, too. The Sox definitely blew it, because it looked like people would be getting them in that line... but the majority of people there seemed to be line-jumpers. So, karma probably evens out to a net gain of 0.

Anyways, I got one, so I don't care.

1. I feel like a moron introducing myself as "twentywontowin".
2. Someone wants to kick my ass because of my smack talk. Happened a couple times before. Imagine what the anti-double-meat-burrito brigade would do to me.

I'm thinking at the very least they will have Sponsors on the bobble heads next year. It really is a cool piece and it looks great on my TV stand.

This reminds me when people were selling the replica rings from the 05 World Series give away. They were going for like 200 bucks or something on ebay and I thought about selling mine. Then I realized the 200 bucks will be gone in no time but the memories I can associate that ring with are priceless.

Same thing with the Big Frank Bobble Head. I can get 100 bucks now but I'd much rather keep it as a reminder of the Big Hurts day at US Cellular.

They definitely are. My sister had a chance to take hers out of its box before I did, and she texted me Sunday night to say that not only was there no corporate sponsor on the bobblehead, but it said, "Number retired August 29, 2010" on the back. When I finally had a chance to unpack mine on Monday night, I got to see what she was talking about. Frank's bobblehead is the sixth one I've received as part of a promotion and is, by far, the coolest.
