Really messed up his left leg blocking the plate. Carted off with an air cast on the leg. Video isn't up yet on mlb.com but I saw it and it was nasty.

The only positive thing I saw there was that the leg did not get severed :?:

If there is no structural damage there, wow that would be a miracle.

Just based on how the Twins have kind of owned the Central the last decade, I kind of don't see them as "perpetual losers."

Those two championships were won with teams that played a more classic style of baseball, one that did not rely on the pinball nature of the Baggiedome. Guys like Puckett, Hrbek, Giaetti, Morris, and Tanana carried them. I don't think many Sox fans hated those teams because they were consistently good, regular or postseason.

Contrast that with the most recent vintages of the Twinkees, which seemed to have been tailored specifically to the biggest home field advantage in professional sports. That style of play has not translated well in post season because teams good enough to make the playoffs usually play well enough to minimize the effects. Now that they have moved out of the Baggiedome, they seemed to have shifted their makeup back to a more traditional style of play with all the sluggers in the middle of their lineup and forsaking a bit of defense for more offensive production (Hudson, Hardy).

The World Series title obviously supercedes anything else, but just tossing aside playoffs appearances as nothing is incorrect, too, in baseball. This isn't the NBA or NHL where everybody gets in the postseason, winning a division championship in baseball is still special, even if it extends your season only 3 extra games.

Comparing the 2000s Sox to the 2000s Twins is silly, because no one in their right mind would give up a World Series title, but not winning the World Series doesn't ruin a good season. That'd be like saying the Sox were just as successful in the 1990s as the Indians were. Nobody in their right mind would actually argue that was the case.

I don't disagree with you on these points, but I think part of the annoyance many Sox fans with the most recent vintages of the Twinkees is that they seemed to have been built specifically to win in the Baggiedome with little regard as to how that style would translate to postseason success (see my previous post).

I know that, I said it last night, but what I am saying is even right now they as a team can say "Hey, we're eight back, win tonight we're seven and then win two more you're five back," so there is still that glimmer of hope you know? But lose tonight not only did you get swept in a DH but you're on the brink of losing the series and I think that would be enough for the team to give up and for Dombrowski to start looking to sell off pieces through the waiver wire.

Only 3 with NY and they're in Chicago. The 7 left with the Red Sox are 3 in Boston in early September and 4 in Chicago the last week of the season, at which point the Red Sox will probably be out of the playoffs. They're really hurting if it is indeed true that Youkilis is out for the season.

I am worried about EJack tonite. Then Schwerzer tomorrow. Then Buck Showalter's revival capacity for the O's this weekend.

The schedule is still tougher on the Sox than twins, but it also comes down to how teams are playing when they face the Sox. Right now,not a good time to face the Rays. Wish we were playing the Yanks this weekend...they are struggling.
Boston, hopefully, does drop out of contention fast, before they get all their injured guys back. If they do, then Sox might be ok vs them.
Also hope that Texas draws away from the A's and Angels,so that trip out there is not too dicey.
But,in the end, with 21 games vs the tigers and twins...we need to do well in those games...starting tonite.

Not sure what Jenks' situation has to do with Capps', but OK.

They have nothing to do with each other, of course. Jenks was the third reliever the White Sox used. Baker was pitching a three-hit shutout, probably the best game in his career. Bringing in Jenks made more sense than relieving Baker.

The comparison is only there because the games were being played at the same time by teams separated by less than 2 games at the top of the standings.

Even with Aybar and Pena in, the Rays lineup is absolutely awful. They're in the middle or at the bottom of most major offensive categories - except OBP and Steals. So what does that translate to? They have an incredible 514 RBI on 913 hits (56.3%). Meanwhile, a team like the Royals has over 100 more hits and 70 fewer RBI (434/1036 = 41.2%).

That's really an incredible dichotomy. Cue Hawk...Don't tell me what you hit...

Twins start an hour before we do today, which is even better given that they went 13 last night and used 5 pitchers last night. Tampa burned Cormier out, throwing him 4 innings, which ultimately cost them the game, but only used 3 other relievers for a total of 2 innings.

Mauer DH'ing again, so no Thome. Wade Davis, AL Rookie of the Month in July, going 4-0 in 5 starts, pitches for Tampa vs. Kevin Slowey (who Tampa will probably make look like Tom Seaver today).

Well, that was a quick turnaround. After dropping the first 2 of the series, I was glad to see the Twins come down to earth once they stopped playing last place teams.....and they had to face Price in game 3 too.

Now if they win today, they get an impressive series split in Tampa vs. the red hot Rays. Ugh. The problem is that we kick started the scuffling Twins on July 18 when we couldn't hold that 6-3 lead in the 9th. We could have have really sent them reeling in that 4 game serious and we blew it.

The Sox aren't going to be able to let up if they are going to win the division.
