Not a bad effort for a guy who knew he would be going back to AAA right after his MLB debut. Once he got past the jitters, he was fine.

Sorry, soxinem, I liked this title better. Normally I just go with the oldest thread, but this is too perfect...

Harrell went 6. The offense churned out 13 more hits and scored close to half of them. Gotta give AJ credit for keeping Harrell's head in the game early on and giving him a chance to earn the beer shower.

5 in a row... Ho hum...

What's especially amazing is that the A's are perfectly geared for a fairly wild pitcher. They're very patient and it showed with the 5 walks. But Harrell shut the A's down once they reached base. Virtually nobody hit him hard. A very impressive performance against a team that could have really damaged him.

I wont lie, I was one of those people putting an L on this game before first pitch. He looked solid.....a hold your breath moment on what looked to be a go ahead slam for Oak.....but it stayed in and for the most part after that he was solid. Getting him runs certainly helped, now he had the luxury to go after the hitters knowing he had some room to work

another good night for Gordon......solid night offensviely all around, even AJ the nice redeemer RBI knock

Good Job Sox......no matter what keep the Twins 2 back in loss column no matter what

To get a quality start out of a kid making his debut? Unbelievable, but then again 45 days ago it would have been unbelievable that we would be in first.

Harrell struggled with some control, but never got blasted. He's got some movement on his pitches that's only going to get better. Could use a little dental work because he's a bit :redneck, but you can't be perfect.

Hopefully this kid sticks around and gets a September call-up.

Despite Harell's wildness he surprised with how hard he threw and the good movement on all of his pitches. I no longer think he is a throw away, Lance Broadway type, with no stuff. I have no idea how he'll do in the long run but at least he's not bad no-stuff pitcher.

Also, I want to see Dayan in the lineup more often. Man, does he have a live bat!

Not necessary. Many nay-sayers, including the ESPN stooges, gave the White Sox a less than 40% chance to win this game.

But the team played like champs behind Harrell and backed the kid up nicely.

And since we played OAK, I figured the team deserved '"A's" for the effort.

Vizquel, to give him some at-bats, since he'll do better than Kotsay or Jones. But he can defensively replace Dayan late and can spell Beckham and Alexei too.

Viciedo I've explained a million times. Don't want this to turn into another of those threads...

It is okay to admit you are wrong about this. Dayan would be fine at DH. You don't DH a Gold Glover with a soft bat to play a weak fielder with a big bat at 3rd. It doesn't help you win.

DHing a young hitter is pretty much the same rationale as putting a young starter in the bullpen.

The bottom line, we need to worry about this year, and this year Dayan's bat helps us win, not Kotsay's.

In all seriousness, this year has been a true roller coaster ride, with game 1 as the long climb.

The A's have been putting up a lot of runs lately in this hot streak they are on,so I do not take for granted that The Kid did a pretty fine job keeping them off the scoreboard. Thankfully, the one big drive was run down by Alex.

The offense had a very good nite with 13 hits, just not real efficient leaving a lot of guys on...but not complaining about 6 runs:D:

I agree with some others....do not trade Dayan!! Play him, don't trade him.
I hope he plays vs all three leftys this weekend, shows his incredible stroke, and stays in the DH spot vs rightys at least a couple of games vs Detroit. Time to go to plan B on the DH spot...no Dunn,no hitting by Kots...go to Dayan.

Because Russ has this inane idea that DHing him will hurt him as a player for some reason. I guarantee Dayan would rather DH than not play at all.

You have to say some crazy things when you're staunchly defending Ozzie's idiotic "all we need is bench players for DH" plan.

As we can see today, KW is desperately working the phones trying to fix the gaping hole that Ozzie wanted. The thing is, if a deal isn't made, we still might have our "missing bat" answer right in our midst with Viciedo. But no, the guy who is creaming the ball has to sit in the bench because there's a law of physics in Ozzie-world that says he can't play DH (not even just because the team needs his bat).

Hell, even Linebrink has been good lately. :D:

It really helps if Linebrink, Threets, and Pena can continue to be good enough for Ozzie to use in non-blowouts. This means that Santos-Putz-Thornton-Jenks aren't getting worn out. A well rest pen makes them all that much better.

Yesterday, Pena did a great job of picking up Threets. Threets put 2 men on and then it took Pena 3 pitches to get 3 outs in the inning.

I hope the guys keep it up, we saw last week how disastrous it can be when Jenks melts down. Those two meltdowns alone cost us 3 games in the standings (a 2 game swing by losing to the Twins plus the 1 loss to Seattle).

We're going to need the bullpen....all of them....to do well if we're going to win the division.

37-23, that is what we need to get to 95 wins. I believe that wins the division, and the way we have been playing baseball 14 games over should not be something that we can't achieve.

I think finishing with more wins than the Twins and Tigers and Indians and Royals (respectively, not combined) wins the division. I don't know what that number will be.

I haven't read through this thread. I had dinner, watched the Giants beat the Dodgers (and Scott Podsednik in Dodger blue) and went out after watching the Sox beat the A's. I was going to post wondering if A's fans were complaining that they made Harrell look like Cy Young and that they can't hit minor league call-ups they've never seen before (last Sunday's performance against Hudson notwithstanding).

Harrell pitched well, especially after the second. It wasn't pretty with four walks in the first two innings, but all of the hits were ground-ball singles and the hit that drove in the run didn't leave the infield. There are a couple of highly touted starters who only pitch six innings and give up at least one run, although they would get more style points.

95 wins the division easily.
I was looking at the schedule before yesterdays game and I figured the Sox should win 91 which would be a close call on the division.
Those 9 games we have left with the Twins will be huge, good news is 6 of them are at USCF.
