Time to add closer options.

.200 hitters are hitting Bobby hard. He can't just throw the ball down the middle all the time.

Another damn victory snatched away in a late game situation... being that we usually don't play well in Seattle - I will take 2 out of 3 there, but seriously the Mariners suck and this loss didn't need to happen... another crushing defeat...

Damn you Bobby, should technically be two blown saves in a row for him... time for Ozzie to relieve him of his closing duties to get his **** back together.

Well, that was a great game regardless of the outcome and really when you get what, four hits? you shouldn't probably win anyways. But blowing saves is a bad habit. Bobby is just about done. You might have to keep him this year, but he should be gone next year. He had a nice little run there for awhile, but something is wrong with him. He can't be trusted.

Just have to hope Jenks gets it together... we have to realize that he's our closer and to make a run for the pennant, we are going to need him to get his **** together. Thankfully the team has an off day to recover from this game, and get to Oakland and get another walk-off loss out of their heads. Two games in one week lost at the last at-bat though, this is not a good trend after a great run the last month.

Bobby lost the game and probably his job tonight. He is not making it easy on the team and Ozzie to keep him in this role.

Luckily we have Putz and Thorton who would be strong closers on most clubs ready to throw. What to do with Bobby now is the big question.

Meanwhile Kotsay and Jones cannot be in the lineup at the same time let alone one after the other in the batting order. ENOUGH with that crap.

Play Viciedo or go get another bat.... our offense is barely better than the mariners with this kind of lineup.

**** Bobby, ****.

cws05champ

Same here...as soon as I saw Bobby in I said why didn't they use Putz. He only pitched 1/3 of an inning yesterday. This has to be addressed...if bobby's in a funk let him work it through in a set up role or middle relief. We can't blow games we should win.

Bobby has allowed 6 runs in his last 2.1 IP. Not good. But you know, taking two out of three is always good. It's too bad we lost this game like that, but again, when you get four hits you're not going to win many (and against a guy like King Felix, I don't mind getting shut out). Bobby is becoming unnerving but what I fear the most from this loss is that the team will return to the black jerseys.

I wouldn't go that far, but I'd go so far as to expect our closer to get three outs against the second worst offense in baseball.

The problem isn't simply a blown save or two; all closers blow saves from time to time and sometimes the blown saves are clustered. The problem is that he doesn't appear to have much in that arm of his. Lately, all he's had is a 93 mph fastball that he can't consistently locate and rolling breaking stuff. It may be an exaggeration but it seems as if he can barely get anyone out these days.

Yeah, Bobby seems to have a bit of "dead arm" issues right now. The fastball has no life, the cutter isn't cutting, and he hasn't thrown a single curveball for a strike in his last several outings. In fact, he rarely throws that curve at all lately. Jenks had a nice little run of saves there when we were in our 25W-5L run and I hope he can rediscover that because our bullpen is a lot better when he is throwing the ball well.

RockJock07

Yeah, imagine how good we'd look with a competent closer! You know, like JJ Putz.

Right, and a team winning 100 games is still going to lose 62 of them in the course of a season.

The think people don't get is that who says Jenks will be of any use in middle relief? He'll just blow games in the 8th instead of the 9th.

I am starting to get scared about the pen situation.

That's silly, Putz has been lights out and so has Thornton. So you have your eighth and ninth guys there, Santos has been good he can be used for the seventh and even Jenks has had streaks of being unhittable (he was just light outs before that family issue) so he can get better and then you're back to playing six inning games.

Putz can close if this keeps up. I am not for releasing Jenks, but Putz can close.

But that stupid beard has to go!

We have eyes and we can see. But Ozzie owed Bobby this one. No mas, though. Was anyone surprised at the outcome?

Hes given up 7 hits in a row minus the sacrifice bunt

Got 3 outs in a non-save situation. Couple of them were hard hit too.

I've been a Jenks supporter 'til now. Two give away games can make the difference between division champ and third place come September. Two of three in Seattle is fine but after the terrible spring, these are games the Sox can not afford to lose. I'm not saying release Bobby, but its time for a rest. Let Putz and/or Thornton carry the load for a while.

Let's focus on the positives! A nice performance by Gavin. He kept up with the King who was also dominant. A true pitcher's duel. Thought we almost lost it when Santos gave up those two hits but Threets not only got the DP, but he also struck out the side the next inning.

Between the family issue/problem/whatever with his wife and the All-Star break he just has not been the same pitcher. Even on that Thursday night inning and a third save versus Minnesota he didn't look as dominant. Very disappointing. Maybe he can find it again though like he did earlier this season. We really need him to because the bullpen is not the same with set-up wise without him closing.

I don't think that's true. In 7 games from 6/22 to the all-star break, Bobby gave up 1 run in 6 innings and was 5-for-5 in save opportunities. That all occurred after he got back from leave, right?

My biggest worry was the first game after the break. I thought he might be rusty. Go figure, he gets a 4-out save, even though he gave up a run. I was shocked by Sunday's results.

It seems he just needs to get back in a rhythm; however, I hope it doesn't take long!

You do know we were facing Hernandez?

Well guys, last Friday we were .5 up in the division. Right now we are 2.5 up. I'll take it. As for Jenks, I was going to go on another epic rant, but this time I'll relax and let him get out of it. Give him another couple of saves. He has cost us two games in this division, but God knows how many games he will win us.

I'm with you Bobby, until the very end.

But this loss doesn't hurt (me personally) nearly as bad as the Twins one.

I feel the same way but you could feel it coming. That's the sort of affirmation of prior thought that nobody wants to experience.

Here's the deal with Jenks:

If we are not going to trust him in the 9th inning, how are we going to trust him in the 8th?

To me, it's either closer or doghouse. Linebrink promoted from the doghouse over to Santos spot. Santos take Putz spot (I am scared of that also). Putz is the closer.

Honestly, I rather keep things as is and just hope Jenks gets it right. I think we have other glaring holes to look at than start looking for more relief help.

It was one ****ing outing, are we ready to trust both these guys with bigger roles?

Yeah, let's make Santos the closer. And Threets, your dominance of the Mariner offense tonight has earned you a spot on this roster the rest of the year.

Come on, let's get real here.

I said the bullpen wasn't a problem, where did I say I wanted Santos as closer?

Look, Putz and Thornton have been great of late. Putz is going to be the closer most of the time in all likelihood and Thornton is going to get the eighth. Do you not have confidence in them? I do. Santos has a sub two ERA and has been good more often than not, I feel ok with him. Threets has been good too. There are two weak spots, there is Linebrink who has been bad this year; and then there is Jenks who has stretches where is unhittable and is currently in a stretch where he sucks. Now, I don't want Jenks in the ninth, but I suspect he can get his act together.

Agreed. This is a good bullpen. Jenks is just having a bad week. Putz is throwing great, so maybe you give him an opportunity or two to close until Jenks gets his stuff back.

Over the long haul, Jenks is still the closer, IMO.

You don't rack up an ERA of over five in a week.

With how angry people have been over this loss (and the Twins one), it wasn't all that much of a stretch to believe he was being serious. :o:
Yeah, I'm so tired from yesterday (stayed up 'till 4 drinking and talking with friends), my brain just isn't functioning. Add to that a long game ending in a loss, what you get is a grumpy dim-witted dude.

Sure, tonight's loss (given the way it occurred coupled with Detroit and Minnesota winning) is a huge disappointment. I was at Mike Shannon's here in St. Louis and got a bartender to put our game on one of the monitors at the bar. I felt really good when Omar got that RBI single, and the air went right out of my balloon when we lost the ballgame.

In spite of all that, we need to get a grip in the heat of this disappointing loss. We have about two and one-thirds months of the season to play. We won two of three in Seattle and three of four in Minnesota. If we keep doing that on a consistent basis, we'll be fine as the rest takes care of itself.

Oh well, I will say it now, we should be 3 and a half up but I'm sorry Bobby, I can't say that around here. You just did. No one is stopping you. That's true, he sucked early, but he started getting it together in late May and early June when the team started to click - christ in June he had a sub 1 ERA. But since going on the bereavement list he has lost something. For some reason though, I suspect he is going to find it again and I wouldn't be shocked to see him string together an amazing August and reclaim the closer spot and be very good again.

ERA is not a good stat to judge relievers on. Go look at Santos WHIP 1.50 :o: Second to last on this team next to Bobby Jenks at 1.58

And Threets has been good too  Base on what, 5 outings?

Twice in a week is not good.

For Billy Koch it would be a sign of improvement. And there were multiple times in Keith Foulke's career where he blew two saves within a week. Roberto Hernandez had two blown saves in a week a couple of times in 1994, and White Sox fans assume that team would have made it to the World Series had the season not ended in August.

The Mariners deserve some credit. They put pressure on Jenks with the bunt hit and sacrificed with their best hitter. The winning run got into scoring position by stealing second. If Jenks gets Wilson, the entire inning changes.

The White Sox should have scored in the 10th after Kotsay walked. Lillibridge went in to run, but instead of putting pressure on the defense by bunting, Jones grounded into a doubleplay on the first pitch. If the Sox score in the 10th, the Mariners don't have the top of the order coming up after a leadoff bunt.

The Sox didn't have any chances to score against Hernandez tonight, but they had a great chance in the ninth with two on and Rios and Konerko hitting. I understood why Guillen relieved Floyd who appeared to be tiring in the eighth but I thought the Mariners were doing the Sox a favor by taking Hernandez out. The Sox had their best hitters up with runners on in the ninth, got their leadoff hitter on, briefly, in the 10th and got a two-out hit to score in the 11th.

It was a game they should have won, obviously.

I hope they can put this game behind them just as they did Sunday's game. The A's have been playing much better of late and just finished taking two of three from the Red Sox. Unfortunately, the Sox won't be facing Gonzalez, who they have always hit very well. They get Cahill (who was initially named to the AL All-Star team) Friday night.

He's added about a point and a half to his ERA with this one bad week.

I can't say that I give a damn what Bobby's ERA is anyway. For closers, that's a bull**** statistic. Either you get the save, or you don't.
