Long game but well worth it!!

Nice effort by Danks hanging in there tonight after the rough second inning.

Of course those huge power alleys killing line drives sure helps.

Some nice clutch hitting too.

And the unbelievable march continues......:bandance::bandance:

Also, Mauer needs to be more subtle when he is giving away location because eventually a pitcher is going to stick it in his ear.

Amazing team effort to get this win. Great job by Danks to pick himself up, dust himself off and get back in the race.

Oh and for all the great job he did with his bat, Beckham caused the deciding run with his feet and brain. Now if he could just learn to cover first on the bunt.

Everyone contributed something offensively and that's the way we like it.

This team reminds me a bit of the 2002 Oakland Athletics. That team was two games under .500 on June 5 and then went on a tear. The culmination of that season was a 20 game winning streak in late August and early September. Their legendary starting pitching struggled early on and then caught fire.

And then they choked away the ALDS to the Twins...

In the 3rd inning, AJ popped out, slammed his bat on the ground and broke it. He then took the broken handle and tossed it at the Twins dugout. Thome took exception and tossed it back to the plate. He and AJ then had some words during his AB in the next half-inning.

AJ needs to cool it with breaking bats, imo. He had a great at bat,so no need to lose his cool....Thome is not usually combative, but AJ had the last laugh with that strikeout of Big Jim. AJ was talking a lot on second base after his double, but it seemed like baseball chatter.

Overall, a wild and wacky, long game. I will take it. 9 is nice.
Carlos caused all the problems in the second for Johnny...shame that those runs are earned. But, Johnny also lost his focus, clearly, in that innning..learning experience. He has done that before in Minny, walking the world that one game. Only one more start in Minny this year,Johnny...get over the hump next time.

Gordo,Juan,Omar,Kots,Alexei,PK,AJ..they all contributed..and Gordo's stopping that grounder prevented a run scoring in the 8th that might have cost us this game...nice.

South Florida is too far south to be the south. In East Tennessee we get all sorts of Midwestern accents - mostly Michigan, Chicago and Ohio - a very similar "Inland Northern" dialect with flat 'a's - that is "flayat". But mostly around here it's the Appalachian twang.

Whenever I go back to Chicago, when I listen to some of my friends, it honestly sounds like a subtler version of the SNL skit. People in Missouri think I'm from New York or Boston.

EDIT: I"m not trying to be supercilious.

EDIT 2: Even though I know by using the word supercilious, I sound supercilious.

Thank you, Mr. Costanza.

Well, he was, but Quentin sailed easily behind him. It looked like an easy catch once he reached out and had it. He maintained full control of his body as he easily picked up on the hop. It just looked to me as if he dropped it.

I think he also expected Quentin to make the play, looks like Rios panicked for a sec once he realized TCQ didn't know where that ball was.

Ultimately, someone probably should have been charged with an error on the play.

Continuing the "accent hijack."

ahahahahaha that is the truth. I remember working out in minny for 3 months all over the state and they sure do have that canadian accent.

I must have it too then.:scratch:Not necessarily. The funny thing is that some lifelong Minnesotans have it and some don't, even those who grew up in the same town.

Well I did watch that movie Fargo was it called? Very strong canadian accentsAs noted, it was a movie. Almost nobody talks like that.

Yeah, there's definitely a Midwestern accent. I'm from CA and I can tell right off when someone is a native Midwesterner. No one's ever told me I have an accent, though. I just say "dude" a lot. :tongue:Californians pronounce short "a" like a short "o" in some words. They'll make "dad" sound like "dod."

October, 2005.

You're referring to 16 wins in 17 games, first five win the division, including three against the team that had been surging and many believed would overtake the White Sox, then three straight against the wild card team, which had won the World Series a year before, then four out of five against the AL West champs, then four straight against the National League champs. That was an incredible run by any standards. I feel privileged to have lived through it.

The 2005 team didn't have a nine-game winning streak, let alone such a streak closely following a 10-game winning streak, but the 2005 White Sox didn't have a miserable April. This White Sox team was 9.5 games behind the Twins in early June, about six weeks ago. The White Sox have picked up 14 games on the White Sox since June 5.

This was a huge win, not because it kept the White Sox in first place, but because it displayed the character of the team. I really liked that Guillen stayed with Danks after he gave up six two-out runs in the second. Gardenhire didn't have the luxury to keep Slowey in the game. I'm guessing without looking at the game thread that some wanted Danks pulled after two and others after five when he was approaching the arbitrary 100-pitch mark.

This is the beginning of a four-game series. Perhaps you don't have to worry about blowing out a bullpen where everyone (except Thornton) has had three days off, but you're better off if you don't have to pitch all of your relievers in the first game of the series. I think one of the Twins' problems of late has been that the bullpen has been overused anyway, but it has to help a team to have so many hitters face so many of the opponents' relievers at the beginning of the series.

A couple of times when the Twins' bullpen was overworked, Pavano came beck to throw complete games to give the relievers a rest. You don't know how the series will play out, but tonight it looks like the White Sox will have a stronger bullpen than the Twins on Friday.

This is the second save Jenks has picked up this season with Thome as the last hitter. The first time, Thome got a hit, and the potential tying run was thrown out trying to score from first. This was a gutsy save, a tough save as such things are measured, considering that the tying run was in scoring position when he entered the game. Fortunately, tonight, the White Sox had the more successful designated hitter.

Nobody realizes they have an accent until they go somewhere else. I think I speak like a normal person, but any time I travel, people can immediately tell I'm from Chicago.

:dunno:
When I first got to Arizona, people used to know right off that I was from Chicago. Now, not so much.

But a few years ago, I worked with a girl who had a New Yawk accent you could cut with a knife! She didn't think she had an accent at all, but made fun of the rest of us for the way we pronounced "Arizona." According to her, we all said "Airr uhh ZOH' nuh".

I also once got into a discussion with someone who took exception to the fact that I think the thing on top of my house is a "ruff." She thought it was a "roof." I told her that, IMO, "roof" is what my dog says!

Shoot, people wanted Danks out of the game when it was 4-2!

I agree. While I didn't want the Sox to implode in the bottom of the second, I thought we'd get to see just how tough they are. I think they showed a lot. And this just might be something that carries through the rest of the year.

Important thing about this win was that their pen had to do a lot of work and ours didn't, as Danks was able to recover from the 6-run inning and still give us 6 innings. They didn't have Duensing and ended up having to call Mansing back up after Slowey only went 3.

The key on Friday's going to be getting to Liriano early. He got shelled in his last outing in Detroit on Saturday and is 0-4 in his last 5 starts (Twins lost the fifth game as well). If Gsvin gives us the same type of outing he has over his last 7 (3-1, 50 1/3 IP, 33 H, 7 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 41 K, 1.25 ERA, 0.854 WHIP), we'll be well on our way to guaranteeing the split of the 4-game series. Anything after that is icing on the cake.

Normally a 6 run inning for the Twins would mean disaster for me in years past. However, after that inning, I had full confidence that the Sox would come back and win. Different kind of team? No Twinkie Dome? I don't know what it was. It felt great though to see the Sox grind one out against the Twins for a change.

I agree. Floyd would be my first choice for a game against Liriano so I am glad that he is on the bump tomorrow. I am hoping he gives us a quality start once again and the Sox can get to the Twin bullpen by the 6th at the latest. That would bode well not only for today's game, but also for the rest of the series.

I love to see Gordon Beckham having at bats like he is now .. i think he'll have a big 2nd half .. i hate to see Johnny Danks struggle like he did early .. that seems way more mental than anything else .. Omar Vizquel seems to be the perfect guy to plug into the 2nd hole .. i love that guy .. missed the end because of annoying health problems but i seem to remember Sergio Santos looking pretty bad out there .. i'll have to watch the replay to see if that really happened i guess .. anyway full steam ahead ..

Santos did lay a cookie out there to Valencia, but otherwise, his line is going to look worse than he pitched. Delmon Young was the only guy who really hit the ball hard off him and, of course, he makes an out.

I can't argue with his results lately. He's been filthy over the past month in a half. However, if I could pick a guy to pitch in a big game, i'd still take Danks. Latest game notwithstanding, Johnny-be-good has been just that all year.

I think you're ace should be the guy you put the most trust in to deliver when it counts. That's Danks for me. Not to say Floyd can't be that guy as well. The double no-hitter game against the Cubs and Strasburg game proved that for me. Having to choose between the two, or three if you include Buehrle, is always a good problem to have.

Hey, the Sox won? How bout that. I took a look at the Game Thread, when it was a 2-run game in the second inning, and I could have sworn we were losing by 10, the team was in the midst of a slump, and the season was basically over...based on a lot of posts I was seeing.

Amazing how the team was able to battle back from two entire runs down with just 7+ innings to play. Maybe the panic brigade will scream a little less next time the Sox fall behind.

 Not likely. That's just the nature of a message board. When things are going good, most everyone is happy, but someone will always find a reason to rain on the parade. When things are going bad, you'd think the team couldn't possibly get any worse. We heard from all parties this past game.

Butterflies in my stomach reminded me of late 2005. 95% confident we'd get it done. Butterflies floating over that 5%.

You only had 5% butterflies around September 15, 2005? I was easily 95% butterflies, 5% confident. That was a tough stretch.

I suppose I was thinking more of October - or at least after Grady Sizemore lost that ball in the sun in Kansas City. When we got on a roll in the playoffs I was nervous - but very confident.

Before the Sox effectively clinched he division I was more like 60% butterflies.

Carlos caused all the problems in the second for Johnny...shame that those runs are earned. But, Johnny also lost his focus, clearly, in that innning..learning experience. He has done that before in Minny, walking the world that one game. Only one more start in Minny this year,Johnny...get over the hump next time.Rios had the ball in his glove, not Carlos. But as you said, Danks lost focus. He got the next out after the should be error, so I don't know if that was lingering or what. Either way, it wasn't like an error came with two outs and the bases loaded. He had a runner on first with two outs before he gave up 5 hits and a walk. There is obviously no excuse for that inning, but I am glad he overcame it and not only gave us 6 inning, but shut the Twins down the next 4.

This game last year, or any recent previous year, is a loss. After the fluke 6 run inning, the Sox would have been biting their nails about the "Metrodome curse." Anytime any bad of flukish thing happened to the Sox in Minnesota (which was seemingly at least once per series), their heads immediately hung low, as if they expected it to happen and they had no chance now. You could almost hear the dugout saying "Oh, no. It's happening again." This team fought back, which is great to see. **** the Twins. Let's make Target Field our house.

Absolutely true. They would have felt the roof was caving in on them, and would not have found a way to come back from that inning, even though they would have had 21 outs to make up a 2-run deficit.

I think a prior Sox team would have had everyone swinging for the fences as well, trying to get it all back in one swing. This team (at least at this stage) still kept playing 1st-to-3rd baseball and really out-Twinned the Twins. A key play in all of that was Beckham being smart enough to not run into the double play in the fifth, holding up on Pierre's grounder, forcing Hudson to throw to first to get Juan with Gordon then beating the throw to second, allowing AJ to score from third with the eighth (and eventually) deciding run. Questionable that they would have been able to turn the double play anyway had Hudson thrown to second, but Beckham could have easily run right into the tag had Hudson decided to come forward.

Honestly, did anyone think we'd ever see the Sox pull off four successful hit-and-runs against the Twins in Minnesota?

Very exciting game last night.

This game was a great example of how little you can tell about a game from a boxscore or stat sheet:

- Four successful hit and runs, that were a big catalyst in the Sox early lead and getting back into the game.

- Rios dropped ball(not scored an error) that turned into 6 runs, even though Danks had a lot of chances to pitch out of it.

- Pierre scoring inches in front of Vizquel being tagged out at second on an ill advised tag up.

- A balk leading to a run because the pitcher got his spike caught on the mound.

- Orlando Hudson bobbling a taylor made double play, and than Beckham with a very heady play to pull up to avoid the DP leading to what turned out to be the winning run.

- It also seemed Pierre got into Slowey's mind right away. A long at bat to start the game followed by a single. Slowey threw to first four times and threw a pitchout all in the first two pitches to Omar.

- The Twins outfield seemed to be playing unusually deep even for the Sox slap hitters. There were a couple of hits I thought would have been easy catches that they weren't close to getting.

Also, for those that say Ozzie is a terrible in game manager. He couldn't have had a better game. Four successful hit and runs. Having faith in Danks to stick it out and save the bullpen for the series. Even though Putz has been impossible to score on he brought in Thornton to get the important out to end the 7th. Bringing Bobby in for the last out of the 8th, something he hasn't done all season.

And those calling Danks a mental midget should be embarrassed.

The Twins were known to play the no double defense in years past against the Sox. That worked in the past, but it doens't work as well as you said last night. The Sox weren't swinging for the fences at all times.

I had to go to bed early last night, but it was so great to read the final score when I woke up this morning. I'm not trying to put the cart before the horse, but with a win tonight, that would give us a 2nd double-digit winning streak this season. Has this feat ever been accomplished by any other Sox team?
