''Justin''? BFF?

I hope not. PK is fine with going home and chillin with his kids...let him re-charge. Back-handed compliment to go as a fill-in for Morneau.

I don't think that really matters for Girardi. That may help him get on the team actually since Girardi sees more of him.

FWIW Pauly has more HR, RBI, and a higher avg than Youk. Youk has a higher OBP, more doubles, and higher OPS.

You can't go wrong IMO.

Youkilis finished second in the inane Final Vote contest. I'm sure Girardi will be persuaded to indulge the fans since the All Star Game is apparently all about us anyways.

I don't think it's up to Girardi. Aren't injury replacements determined by the next guy in the player's vote at that position?

I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the new steroid testing. I seem to recall players saying they used HGH and/or steroids as a means of staying healthy.

Correct. MLB news release:

Paul Konerko to replace Justin Morneau on A.L. All-Star Roster (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20100710&content_id=12154124&vkey=pr_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb )

Joe Girardi made the choice. Perhaps more of an honor for Konerko than the actual fan vote beauty contest.

Nope, sorry! Don't feel like celebrating Paulie backing into the All-Star game due to an injury to that perennial Twins crybaby Morneau.

I am a major Konerkoholic, and as such, I think he should have been voted in straight-up. When he wasn't, I tried my level damndest to get him in on the final vote. When that failed, seemed as though it would be best if he could spend time with the family and rest up for the second half of the season.

The All-Star game is an MLB joke.

Let me understand you. You want Konerko in the game. you think he deserves to be there, but only on your terms or you'd rather he didn't go at all?

This almost seems like a better honor to me. He didn't win some popularity contest, but was hand picked to take the place of another player who can't play. Maybe he should have been picked the first time after the popularity contest ended, but there are several deserving BU 1B around.

Nothing wrong with being first alternate at all...

Sorry, VC, but I disagree. He was hand-picked to take the place of Morneau, with Youkilis being hurt. How does that translate to "first alternate"?

I think Paulie deserved to be a starter. You don't think so? Well, fine; we agree to disagree.

And we could argue endlessly about whether being chosen to the All-Star Game is an "honor." I think it's a beauty contest, pure and simple.

As Ozzie would say, "Tank Got!" (Thank God).

Most Sox fans remember the last time PK swung for the fences in '02.
His second half was nothing to write home about, and 2003 was the worst year of his career, numbers wise.
Later, it was revealed Konerko played the second half of '02 and all of '03 with a hairline fracture in his foot, IIRC.
The fracture occured during the '02 HR Derby.

I think being picked as a reserve is not winning a beauty or popularity contest. I think going is a good thing for him. You think PK is upset about the way he got in or just happy he's going?

From Paulie's perspective this is a nice career moment. You saying it's not worth celebrating says otherwise. I choose to celebrate with Paulie instead of worrying about whether it's the absolute best thing to celebrate...

I was all set not to watch the AS game but now i have to since PK is in .. i have to wonder if he isn't a little disappointed after hearing his post-game interview .. maybe he was looking forward to getting away from the madness and relaxing, as you only can, with family and friends .. i'm sure that he's honored and even proud .. but he can't be more proud than we are of this man ..

My initial response was ''go to hell'' girardi, but upon reflection, PK deserves to be there,so in the end, when they look at his resume,it will say ''4 time All Star'' and no one will ask how, so good for PK.

I think it is nice for Matt Thornton,a first time All Star,to have PK alongside him, to introduce him around and hang with.

Just make sure you get your rest,PK,and stay away from the homer contest, and take the family with, and run up that expense account from MLB doing some fun stuff.

And come back ready to continue to kick butt.

Both of these things - completely echo what you said. I hope that Thornton will do the same when he gets picked again. While middle relievers and set-up men don't normally get their due (often the position where the guaranteed rep spot draws from), I hope this won't be Matt's only appearance; he certainly has the stuff to make it more in the future.

TOTALLY, BRO... Stats R stoopid.

I at least love his first point about more commonly accepted stats like wins or saves, stats that are so utterly stupid and pointless, they tell almost nothing. And then people think things OPS is complicated. Posnanski rules, even if I disagree with is notion that Youkilis is far and away a better choice than Konerko.

I read the JoePos article this morning and I think he's being too harsh to Girardi. I bet Joe is aware of those types of metrics. However there's other issues at play.

Kevin Youkilis is 31 years old. Chances are he's going to go to a couple of more ASG's in his career. This is probably Konderko's last shot. Boston has 6 guys on there already. As mentioned, Chicago's in 1st now, and they have 1. I just don't think it's that big of a deal to warrant a column. It's especially puzzling since he wrote a column a few days ago describing how the ASG has many different meanings and isn't always about the very best players for half a season so even if you do think Youk is better than Paul it's not always the best choice.

I think he's more just ripping Girardi's public quote that he picked Konerko based on his higher average, couple more HR, and couple more RBI, and venting frustration that the manager of the New York Yankees displays such an "old school" thought process on baseball stats.

If Paulie wants in, congrats. I tend to only worry about "snubs" when its the guy's first and possibly only time in the ASG. Once you've been there once, I honestly bet these players don't want to go. They never get a two day- much less three day- weekend to spend away from the job.
