Apparently for some reason beyond comprehension the Mariners still think they have a shot?

I can't even imagine what it feels like to be a Indians fan.

And that Russel Branyan will enhance that shot.

They had to do something about that offense. Win some games, Mariners to keep Cliff Lee away from the Twins.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Branyan seems to move a lot, but it's always the same three teams that go after him (Mariners, Indians, Brewers)?

He re-defines the term "journeyman".

Why didn't the Mariners just re-sign him in the first place? Ridiculous...

Good. As long as they don't trade Cliff Lee to the Twins.

IF the Mariners trade Cliff Lee,methinks a certain pinstipe team in NY
(the one he threw a CG agianst in game 1 of the 2009 WS) might be interested.Especially when AJ Burnett is a headcase right now.

They would have loved to. They offered him a very fair contract. Unfortunately, Branyan's agent didn't tell him that the economics of free agency have changed completely and hitting 31 HRs doesn't get you a ten mil per contract anymore. If I remember correctly, the M's offered him a lot more money than the Indians and it's fairly sad he didn't have good enough advisors to tell him to take that deal with the Mariners in the first place.

Anyways, weird trade. It's like if the Royals traded DeJesus to the Pirates...

I think the M's also thought for some crazy reason that Milton Bradley would replace the lost production from Branyan. As far as why they did this trade? Most likely to try to keep interest going in the team and try to pull off what the Sox did and get crazy hot. The M's actually have been playing a little better lately but gained virtually no ground because the Rangers were hotter. They dug themselves an even bigger hole than the Sox did. At 15 games out, they would need a White Sox-ish streak or better to even sniff getting back in the race.
