Let's keep this sweep thing going this weekend, and take down the lowly Cubs. Who would have thought the Sox would be back to being a "contender" in the AL Central for this weekend's Sox-Cubs tilt!?!

What a great game on the hill for Floyd, and Paulie is DA MAN!

I'd forgotten about that (the near no-hitter, not the 97 losses). That (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CAL/CAL197605260.shtml) game was the last of the streak.

I like our chances at 10 tomorrow. When was the last time we did THAT?

I think it was 1976 by a team that finished the season with 96 losses. I'm only going by memory, but the winning streak reached 10 with Ken Brett being robbed of a no-hitter by an official scorer on a ground ball that Jorge Orta misplayed with two outs in the ninth.

Still, that was a scoreless game, and after the Sox scored a run in the 10th, Bill Melton got the Angels first legitimate hit in the bottom of the inning, but didn't score in the 1-0 loss. That was early in the season, which went downhill from there.

Meanwhile, it's nice to see the Sox win despite having an idiot manager who batted Kotsay third. The Sox had a few chances. During this streak, the White Sox won 1-0 and 2-1 with deciding runs scoring on two-out hits with runners in scoring position. Today Konerko drove in himself as well for some breathing room. When you have great pitching, such good things can happen.

Edit: I gave up on the team the last week of the season, being away at college anyway, and missed the last loss. But the ground ball to Orta was clearly an error according to the Angels announcers. There was no television coverage of the game either in LA or Chicago.

It's nice that while the White Sox were sweeping at team that won two of three in Minnesota, the Twins were being swept in Wisconsin, finishing with a 2-4 record against their division rival, which came into the game tied with the Cubs.

I hope the Cubs series goes well.

Going from memory again, I believe the Sox won two of three in the series they played before going on the winning streak. Things were going well before the streak, but most people didn't notice.

One other interesting point about the game was Viciedo not coming out for defense at third in the ninth. I don't know if that means anything, though.

Edit: I gave up on the 1976 team in the last week of the season and missed the 97th loss. The ground ball to Jorge Orta was clearly an error according to not just Harry Caray but the Angels radio announcers. There was no television coverage of the game either in Chicago or LA, but the official scoring call was a major baseball news story. There were calls for the league president or commissioner to overturn the scoring decision.

I like the fact that Dayan at 3rd has shown soft hands and a strong arm. I don't know about his range but he's certainly nothing close to being a butcher.

Also great to see Bobby being overpowering again. I was concerned that his stuff wouldn't be good today since he pitched last night and the night before. But his stuff was outstanding: biting curveball, 95-98 on the gun, good control, etc...

Keep rolling guys!

Yep, but we demolished the Atlanta Braves (class of the NL) and will probably be competitive with the Rangers so it does not worry me.

This team is hot, and I mean hot. Everyone is having a great time playing right now, and we are winning with our best line ups and our worst ones. Pure pure brilliance.

2.5 games back and 7 games made up in a span of three weeks. What a run. Also, absolutely stoked by the way we're winning these games. Runs with two outs, that is so un Sox like. This team is a special one.

I would guess a combination of Morel and the acquisition of Teahen. There was a presupposed idea that Viciedo couldn't play 3B, but I don't think anyone would confuse him for Ryan Braun out there.

I think he could be a fine first baseman, given his skill-set.

Not to take anything away from the Sox win and currently winning streak but Texas also has a 9 gamer going. We also have a series coming up against them soon.

The secret is to never worry about ANY game or team except the ones you are playing TODAY. I'm not going to think about the Cubs until tomorrow.

Did anyone else out there feel like we were going to find a way to win today even after failing to drive the runs in earlier? I haven't had that feeling in a while. Of course, I KNEW when PK came up to bat with a man on in the 8th. Too obvious.

AND i thought the game was safe when Bobby came in... definitely haven't felt like that in a while!

He made 30 erros in 284 chances at 3b for Birmingham last year. Concerns about his defense are quite justified. I'm glad he had a good day today in the field. He looks a little lighter and generally in better shape to me than he did last year.

Bobby Bonilla's defense was so bad at third in Class A ball that he didn't play third again until the Pirates stuck him there as a major leaguer out of desperation after reaquring him from the White Sox.

I don't know if Viciedo will ever be a regular major league third baseman. I don't know if Viciedo will ever be a regular major league third baseman who won't be a defensive liability. But it's possible he could become a better third baseman than he was in the minors.

That's true, I forgot about the fact that he is in much better shape now.

As for the errors, it's not always a tell all on a player's defensive abilities. E.G. The Cubs Starlin Castro is considered by scouts to be an excellent glove man and he made upwards of 50 errors in the minors last year.

Why win totals for starting pitchers are insignificant--

Last four starts for Floyd...four quality starts. 3 no decisions, and one loss. Sox score 6 runs in those four games.

Gavin has been outstanding.

If he can be serviceable in the field and hit a little we'll have hit the jackpot with him.

There is a lot of double counting going on in that list. As best I can tell, the Sox have won 10+ games in a row 11 times in franchise history.

Some other thoughts:

1) The team needs to pull up the last four box scores of Gavin's starts and hold Kangaroo Kourt. Anyone who has failed to advance or score a runner in scoring position with less than two out owes him something.

2) This team is making studying for the Illinois Bar Exam barely bearable.

3) Anybody got a good one-liner for me to send to die-hard Braves fan who I haven't talked to in about a year? I've had a few thoughts, but nothing so hilarious that breaking the silence won't be more awkward than funny.

Nice win,Sox.:D:

Nice series.
Nice week.
Nice run since the Tigers came to town.
We have lost 2 games...one that we led and Thornton had a tough day.
One that we could have won easily vs the Cubs...15 in a row anyone?

Good to see that Ozzie's instincts on having a lefty like Kotsay in the lineup vs a righty sinkerballer supreme paid off with a double, single and walk out of that three hole. It was an obvious matchup edge over most anyone else in the lineup..smart baseball man, that ozzie:cool:

I agree that Dayan showed nice hands and strong arm..should be a very good 1st baseman with his range.

PK absolutely destroyed that Saito pitch...one of the longer homers of the year,imo...thing of beauty. Wish I had been there today..love watching those perfect parabolic bombs just zoom out into the wild blue yonder.

I had to laugh today when I heard Dan McNeil say that he thinks Gavin is ''fragile'' and will lose today...obviously has not been watching Gavin the last 4-5 starts...HES BACK!!!!

Our starting pitching is the key. Yes, we've had some good offensive games, but the pitching was there to see us to a 2-0 victory today a 1-0 win vs. the Nats and the 2-1 win vs. the Nats.

The good news is that all 5 of our starting pitchers could keep this hot streak going. I guess we'll see how Buehrle and Peavy do once we get back to facing AL competition again.

I was thinking more along the lines of '04 or '06. Those were really Konerko's best seasons with the White Sox, especially '06.

In '05, I remember being hated and despised here at WSI for mocking the greatness of Ross Gload. I do recall being told that Gload was a .300/30/100 guy if the Sox would just give him a chance.

I was wondering the same thing. Even if the problem was throwing, playing with a solid first baseman can help a third baseman a lot.

People have assumed the problem was range and quickness, of course. They also have assumed the balls he gets to that don't go through his legs are thrown away.

I haven't talked with anyone who knows for sure.

It's all part of the game.

If we didn't blow 20 leads in the 6,7,8,9 innings we would be eight games in front.

If the Sox had been scoring a decent amount of runs in the early part of the season, they wouldn't have had to worry about losing leads in the 6,7,8, and 9th innings. The offense put too much pressure on the starters and pen.

This, however, is what makes the whole thing a lot of fun. To see a team pull itself out of a total spiral and turn it on is a rare treat in baseball. Typically a losing mindset takes over, and things just don't ever get better. It's refreshing to see a near miraculous makeover in attitude.

This team hasn't looked back on all of its blown opportunities. It has just embraced the new opportunities and is now cashing in.

My first game attending this year as well (and probably only one).

The parallels between the game today and the US-Algeria game on Wednesday were rather uncanny. We had scoring chances that we couldn't convert (AJ played a role in both of those, striking out looking in the 4th on a very questionable pitch, and grounding into a twin kill in the 6th) and the Braves pretty much had nothing, but we couldn't put them away until Paulie's blast (which landed about 2 sections over towards the foul pole in left from where I was sitting, surrounded by the Berwyn Park District Day Camp group, inadequately supervised by the camp counselors who plunked down some major coinage in a vein attempt to keep 50-60 youngsters of all ages interested in a baseball game [I've never seen kids have to go to the bathroom as often as these lime-green clad urchins]).

But it was all worth it, to see a 9-game winning streak and a blast from Paulie. :bandance::bandance::bandance::bandance::bandance: :bandance::bandance::bandance::bandance:

Paulee just KILLED that ball. Anyone get a distance on it?

I was in Section 161 (Row 12) and it landed about 2 sections over from me towards the foul pole (159, I'm guessing) about the same distance up. So I'm guessing 390-400.

My first game of the year, too. What an awesome performance by Gavin! We were a little disappointed when the Sox loaded the bases and didn't score...but Gavin kept 'em at bay. I called Paulie's homer - well, not really, but I did say "He's due, he's due!!!" And that thing went a LONG way.

The cheering for Bobby as he ran onto the field for the 9th was really loud. I admit that earlier in the season, he made me nervous but he seems to have figured it out lately.

That was the best series i've been to,in a long time, for so many reasons .. least of all is that i felt good enough to go to 3 games in a row .. maybe it's because i went with my daughter and maybe it's watching this team play the game like i always knew they could if they could just get a spark of some kind .. playing the NL was that spark .. i'd be surprised if we don't at least win the next 2 series .. then we go to texas .. they are also playing out of control lol .. the weather down there will be as hot as both teams are right now ..

“That team right there is the best we’ve played this month,” Chipper Jones (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/j/chipper_jones/index.html?inline=nyt-per) said. “They’re swinging the bats. And the back of their bullpen is dynamite. They’re the first team I’ve seen that can shorten a game to six innings.”

Pretty cool stuff. That was nice of Jones. I'm really proud of our guys.

Very good assessment. As others have noted, this current hot streak is an example of the Sox winning the way they were designed. Exceptional starting pitching, solid bullpen, and producing runs in a variety of ways.

Exceptional starting pitching has always been the key. But, during the streak, our pitching has been a level above exceptional. I still don't understand how designing a team destined to win only if their starting pitching is elite is a good idea.

It simply isn't.

That said, I'm along for the ride. Let's grab Stephen Drew or Luke Scott and win this thing.

Great game, great day. If not for terrible situational hitting with runners on 2nd and 3rd and nobody out a couple of Sundays ago, this could actually be a 13 game winning streak. But it was my first Sox game of they year, and to top it off, I actually got to walk the bases after the game. Keep it up against the Cubs.

Let's see... during this five series wins in a row, 13 of 15 streak that the Sox are on, the team has scored 5 or more runs 8 out of the 15 games, and has lost only one game in which the opposition scored at least 4 runs. I'd say that "destined to win only if their starting pitching is elite" does not accurately describe how the team has been winning lately.

On this 9-game win streak, the Sox RPG is just barely above AL league average.

Well that's the way every team builds their team in the off-season. Every team expects to win for those exact reasons. Except the Pirates.

Over the years, some teams have not emphasized pitching to the degree that the Sox have this year, and many teams definitely have depended more on power hitting than this Sox team does. In fact, until recently, teams like Texas, Boston, and our own Sox have not put an emphasis on scoring with speed, preferring instead to load as many power hitters into the lineup as possible.

My comment was in response to CG saying that the Sox have been winning recently "only" because the pitching has been elite. It was not intended to suggest that the hitting has been elite. By the way, I was commenting on the 5-series-win, 13-of-15 streak, not just the 9-win-in-a-row streak.

I know, but I didn't feel like tallying all those games, I just saw a infoblurb on Sports Rise this morning. Over the 9 game win streak, the Sox have scored 4.6 RPG. AL Average is 4.56. It's awesome the pitching has come around, but there's still some work to be done on this offense, the pitchers are going to have to come back to Earth sooner or later.
