**** yes, the bullpen made it interesting, but Bobby slams the door. 3 games under .500, this was our record last year at this time as well and we had the division lead by the end of July, yeah we lost it and had a bad year, I'm just sayin.

Buehrle was great.

I probably shouldn't say this till we at least make it to .500, and we're still not all that close, and this is probably foolish, but: sleep with one eye open, Twins and Tigers. We're making a run for it.

Pierre has been a surprisingly decent defensive OF.

Everyone just thinks he is awful b/c he throws like a 9 year old. But he gets a decent break on the ball, has lots of speed, and doesn't take horrible routes.

Buehrle pitched his ass off, Sox got some key hits for him and Pierre made a great diving catch.

On to DC and the nasty Nats. Stay hot, boys!

I stand by my prediction the first week into the season - one of the rare times I ever make a positive prediction - Pierre will end up outhitting, outstealing, and outplaying Pods by the end of 162 games.

As it worked out, this was not the game to have moved Jenks to one of the setup roles and Santos to closer, as some advocate earlier this season. And it is good for the sake of the win tonight, that Jenks was not traded. Tonight, Jenks was the man that Santos and Thornton were not, and he had to be. The fair ball hit off of him was turned into an out with a great catch, I hear, by Pierre, who scored two and drove in a third run.

It looked like the Pirates played much better defense tonight, and perhaps the Sox hit into some tough luck with the line-drive doubleplay with two on to end the sixth.

It's great to sweep the Pirates (who, by the way swept the Cubs earlier this year). That's 11 straight losses for the Pirates, but I'm guessing they don't get swept by the Indians this weekend.

We took care of a struggling team and get to face another one this weekend. The Nats got swept by Detroit and lost every game not started by Strasburg on their road trip. They are a much better team at home though, so it won't be easy.

Great outing by Buehrle!

Team's playing well right now, I wasn't even that nervous in the Pirates 8th as they clawed back into it. Felt either Sergio, Matt, or Bobby could get the job done.

I'm sure the opposition fueled that optimism, but it's nice to watch a Sox game and not be waiting for impending doom.

That really was a great catch by Pierre, he looked like he was playing really deep but with his speed he can afford to. Great outing by Buehrle, Santos is starting to scare me a bit. Bobby has been solid lately, not his normal shaky performance that he's had last season and earlier this season. Great series, I hope they destroy that HOF pitcher tomorrow.

Bill Melton was talking about how despite his 100 mph fastball we used to own Verlander and that hopefully, we can do the same with Strasburg.

Not only that, I read that Strasburg will be on a strict 100 pitch count tomorrow. Guys like Pierre and AJ tend to foul off a lot of pitches and we might only need to face Strasburg for 5 or 6 innings even if he is rolling because we can run up that pitch count. Plus, I echo the statements of others on this board. Soft tossers like Mitch Talbot, Ted Lilly, and Dana Eveland worry me far more than the fireballers. We have a lot of good fastball hitters on our club. We shall see what happens.

Lilly is not a soft tosser. He is actually a "sneaky fast" lefty that gets a lot of hitters out with high fastballs. But i agree that traditionally, we struggle against the Jaime Moyers of the world.

Perhaps if they keep winning, ChiSoxGirl should stay in San Diego?

I was at our school's graduation tonight, but I listened to some of this in my car...It sounds like it was a nailbiter.

Buehrle now 22-6 in interleague play.

Some shoddy defense in the 8th despite no errors being posted. We've certainly seen Alexei start a double play on that ball he grabbed in the 8th. However, getting just one out would have been helpful.

Someone is going to have to explain to me why Beckham was playing up the middle with a right-handed batter up against Thornton. Isn't it more likely the guy's gonna hit the ball the opposite way? If Beckham is playing at a normal 2nd based position, that's an easy groundout and the Sox are out of the inning up 5-3.

Somehow being only 6-1/2 out sounds a lot better than 7-1/2. And they've gained 3 games on the Twins in their last 10. :bandance:

everything's going according to plan .. keep winning series, while sweeping some .. i have never liked inter-league play but this year it's a godsend .. keep playing well and winning and it will continue on as we roll into the AL teams .. momentum can be a weird thing sometimes .. Quentin and Beckham keep it up .. i like having Vizquel in the game .. even at his age, he has so much talent that he can't help but make the team better than it was before he played a lot ..

You know, this is about the third time in the last couple weeks that I've seen Pierre make an awesome catch. His weak arm notwithstanding, I haven't seen anything to justify all the complaining people were doing about his defense in the offseason. He's probably not a gold-glover, but he seems pretty solid out there to me.

My take:

Juan Pierre is a better defender than Pods. Now, I am a big Pods fan and still think that you can debate whether trading Ely and Link for Juan was better long term than re-signing Pods and keeping those pitching assets. Pods is still batting around .290 vs Juan at .256 but Juan is coming on strong at the plate and running wild on the paths. So, Juan might validate the move in the end. He takes better routes to the ball, and is better around the wall.

Not sure what is going on with the Viciedo move, and still liked Nix a bit, but no doubt Nix just has not hit the ball very well. Strange move, but kenny is a mad scientist so who knows?

If the Sox entertained trading MB to the national league, he would have to fetch a decent return...the guy owns the NL. 22-6? Get out. I think the NL will be like a semi-retirement plan for MB...when he is tapped out in the AL..go to the NL to wind down his career in his 40's a la Jamie Moyer.

Carlos Quentin is looking very doublish this week...me likey:D:
Tigers are hot..six in a row, and 5 ahead of the Sox...glad we own them!
But they get the bad Diamondbacks in Detroit this weekend...maybe they catch the Twins, who travel to Philly?

Sox need 2 of 3 in DC. Then come home and go at least 4 of 6 vs Braves and Cubs...that gets them to .500 at 37-37..with 88 games to go...win 52 of those and they might sneak out this division at 89-73:D:...

Go Sox.

I missed the game, but Beckham 1 for 3 and Quentin 2 for 4 looks encouraging. If we are to have any hope this year, we need both of these guys to wake up offensively.

.....and even if we don't have a chance this year, we still need these guys for next year and beyond.

I wouldn't disagree with your "sneaky fast" statement but Lilly's bread and butter pitch is that big arcing slow 81 mph curve ball. It sets up his sneaky fastball much in the same way Buehrle's change up sets up his cutter. Basically, if you are a lefty who can get a curve ball and a semi-decent change up over, the Sox hitters are baffled.

Lilly needs to get his curveball over to be effective. If he can't throw it for strikes, hitters sit on his fastball.
