So far Haren has struck out the first 9 Dodger batters. :o: What's the record for consecutive Ks to start a game?

Baseball Almanac says it's 9 by a New York pitcher (vs. Cleveland) back in 1884.

Joe Cowley of the White Sox held the A.L. record striking out the first seven Rangers in a game at Texas I want to say in 1986 or so.

That is correct. May 28th in 1986.

EDIT: Ramirez grounded out so the streak is over. Pretty impressive.

Ricky Nolasco tied this streak last year, as did our very own Jake Peavy back in 2007 I wanna say. I believe that was a game where he struck out 16 and got a ND.

These records refer to Ks to start a game.

Right. The Sun-Times' Joe Cowley and the pitcher Joe Cowley are two different people.

Unless I'm looking at this wrong, Haren had 9 k's in the first three innings, but not in a row. A few singles sprinkled in there:

His end game looked awful, after striking out 9 in the first 3 innings he finished with only 10 in 6 1/3 giving up 4 ER and 10 hits.

Not sure how I missed that, must have been from scanning the box score to quickly. So it's not a record, but he simply recorded the first 9 outs as strikeouts.

Right. The Sun-Times' Joe Cowley and the pitcher Joe Cowley are two different people.

The pitcher Joe Cowley pitched a no-hitter against the Angels, giving up a run on a sacrifice fly to Reggie Jackson in a 6-1 win. It is probably not common for no-hitters to end with doubleplays, but it is not common for such an unremarkable pitcher to pop up in the record books for consecutive strikeouts to start a game. It also is noteworthy to consider that no-hitter was Cowley's last major league win. The Sox traded him to Philadelphia after the season, and he didn't do anything for the Phillies.
