Small ball works when guys are actually hitting. If this team can get all cylinders going offensively (which is getting way too far ahead of ourselves, but what the hell?) I think they can do both quite well.

I've been having some major computer issues the last two days and add in some of the issues I've been dealing with in terms of my relocation and the last two daytimes have absolutely sucked. Last night's Sox game was obviously no exception but at least the other two Chicago teams won.

Then today the computer issues peaked, tons of reboots and system crashes and oh man I was not happy. Then tonight, I got it all fixed and for the first time my cat managed to be loose in the house with the other cat who lives here and they didn't get into a fight. Then came the grand slam putting a damper on the evening, but Alex picked it right back up and then along came Jones.

What you gonna say, go on and have yourself a season, Andruw. You rock. Nice team effort tonight lots of people got hits and there were even a bunch of extra base hits.

I think before the game someone said the Sox were going to score 6. Someone replied, "hopefully they don't give up 7". Nope in fact the opposite happened and that's just fine.

Turns out I'm having a pretty good day after all...:)

Good win. Maybe the way we won will put us on a roll.

Jones and Rios (and Danks) the bright spots of the season.

Sox must lead the world in % of homers hit that are solo.
Floyd's pitch count was only in the 80s or low 90s; (in contrast to Peavy's the other night that was in the 100s).

Maybe so, I haven't been able to watch as many games so I haven't seen him on the outfield, it seems like he's running on the bases fine from what I've seen.

He may be hurting the team defensively but it's hurting the team a hell of a lot more when he's hitting .165, so I'd put up with him in RF for him to start hitting.

Maybe, but for right now, Jones is hitting better and needs to hit third. Rios should be near the top of the order, too.

For now, I'd do: Pierre, Rios, Jones, PK, Teahen, TCQ, AJ, Bacon, Alexei

Where are the Andruw Jones detractors now? You now, the people who didn't think a weak-hitting team could use the bat of a re-dedicated 32/33-year old slugger who has close to 400 home runs to go with 10 Gold Gloves?

AJ is a career .280+ hitter who is lost right now too. They will both likely bounce back and start hitting this year. Too much talent for me to think otherwise. Quentin at least looked like he was covering the fastball today which he wacked for a HR. The breaking stuff was still fooling him but hitting the fastball is the first step towards getting out of a funk.

Guys you can thank me for this win. I was in left and shouted to Andruw Happy Birthday! And he turned around nodded and gave me the fist pump. I think my wishing him the Happy Birthday in the first inning gave him the motivation to have a great game. :redneck

That's my point...a 15 game sample shouldn't trump what we know to be true. I'm going to hold off on crowning Jones and on burying TCQ.

I predicted Rios coming through, then before the ninth I predicted Jones blasting away.:bandance:

AJ has a much longer track record than Quentin does. Quentin, by the way is a career .250 hitter and has had only one other year where he has hit above .250 and that was in less than 200 PA's. So, the jury is still out on Quentin. I hope you're right, I hope that tonight gets him back on track and he starts hitting the hell out of the ball and has a string of years for us that look like '08, but it is just as likely that he doesn't. Really I'd say it's 50/50.

He is on pace for about 35 dingers this year and that is fine with me!He's got 6 homers in 17 games. That's on pace for 57 in 162 games. I don't for a moment think that's going to happen, just pointing out the math.

I'd still rotate them through the outfield to keep people fresh. I don't think Quentin would handle DHing very well.Quentin beats himself up too much from what I've heard. Guys like that can't handle DH, because all they do between AB's is brood.

Nice to get an exciting win like that.

I'm still not very confident in the offense until they start doing this more consistently. I am praying that this game is what they needed to say, "Hey we can do this, and we can do it often."I'm hoping that this kind of win, with blowing a lead and then coming back to win, is just what they need to get on a little bit of a roll. It would have been very easy for them to say "oh, well, here we go again" after the slam, and just pack it in.

Has everyone given up on Quentin already? I happen to think the guy is just in a funk and will snap out of it and put together a very solid year. He DID hit a HR today, did he not?I haven't. I'm convinced he'll come around once he realizes he doesn't have to win every game bay himself.

IMHO Quentin should DH every third game or so, in a rotation with the other OFs. Of the OFs on the team, Rios and Jones are the best defenders and need to be on the field as much as possible.

Paulie really needs to play first base, perhaps with just one pure off day every week or every other week. Kotsay should only be getting an occasional start at first base, and be the team's primary pinch hitter, a role in which he has excelled.

Paulie is quietly having a good season, power-wise. It's too bad guys aren't getting on base in front of him.

But if the Sox continue to tank, I could envision both Paulie and AJ agreeing to be traded to contenders at the deadline.

I totally missed tonight's game. Not that I could have seen it on television anyway, but I was in the Bay Area, and didn't even listen to the Giants breaking their losing streak.

It is nice to see the Sox win. As one who believes Jones should be the regular right fielder, it was good to see him have a good offensive game, despite hitting into a doubleplay in the with two on and the Sox down by a run in the seventh. Rios picked him up with two outs and gave him a chance to win the game in the ninth.

It's discouraging that Sox pitchers and/or the defense gave up two leads. That's going to happen sometimes. I would never complain about a win, especially with the poor start the Sox have had this year.

I have a feeling Quentin is going to get hot.

Beckham will follow Quentin's lead.

I actually think Ozzie had a very good press game conference after Thursday's game.

If I was on the team, it would definitely get me to go out there and prove my "leader" wrong. No one wants their boss/manager/leader to be completely disappointed with them. They also don't want people to think they actually have given up. They shouldn't need this in the first place, but they are human just like everyone else.

Fragile bunch of players, but it seems like this team goes into deep mental ruts so often, they play out of fear of them, and they don't have much confidence in getting out of them. It starts to take effect on everyone.

Kotsay, Pierre, Peavy were all brought in as strong clubhouse leaders who are good with young players, inspire the team, and aren't afraid to get into another's players face (with respect). I'm sure them struggling doesn't help, but it doesn't even seem like they are those type of players after being transplanted in our clubhouse.

Huh? Im not worried about the fans being behind it - if the team wins, the fans will magically be behind it. That's how winds blow. But why do you think the players aren't behind it?

Huh? Im not worried about the fans being behind it - if the team wins, the fans will magically be behind it. That's how winds blow. But why do you think the players aren't behind it?

Fan base: I would cite many posts here and the attitude of Hawk Harrelson toward the "duck snort." He (and "we," I think) have nothing but disdain for it. I call it going with the pitch and hitting an RBI double.

And of course, if the team wins the fans will cheer. But the problem is that when the team is struggling the fan base blames it on Ozzie's philosophy rather than on poor execution and constantly reinforces that by expressing approval for the big swing. Even when the team wins, the fans provide back pressure. What is Scott Podsednik, my candidate for offensive MVP of the decade (Of course I am saying that to be provocative, but I wish someone would look up the Sox W/L record with Pods healthy and without healthy Pods between 2005 and 2009. Remember even in 2005 they tanked after the ASB when Pods went down.) remembered for? His WS HR. Why was it that Tadahito Iguchi, after a great year fulfilling the role of 2 hitter decided he wanted to move down in the order and become a power hitter?

Players: Here I am just going by results. I think it is easier for most players to play Ozzie's way than to try to hit a 500 ft HR every time up. But we still see the pop-ups, the "He-just-missed-its" and the pulled DP on the outside pitch. I would rather propose that the Sox have not yet bought into situational hitting and "small ball" than believe that they cannot pull it off.

And what is that? Where's Guillen trying to take this team.
It's not to improve the obp...nothing in Ozzie's words or personnel decisions indicate that that is important to him.
Defense? Naaah. That's always been subordinate.
What's he looking for?

Personally, I never was against the Andruw Jones signing. For the money, I thought it was great if it worked, and not detrimental if it didn't. He showed us in ST that his career was not yet over. And, every time he has been in the lineup, I've been happy.

Now Quentin is a different story. I've never been in the camp that thought that TQC would be the offensive catalyst for this years team. I've never been sold on the fact that he can reproduce his 2008 numbers. He's too injury prone and he's a headcase. I'd have no problem with Quentin riding the pine and Jones start everyday in right field. Quentin should DH way down in the order until he gets his **** together.

Suddenly Andruw Jones, who the world all thought stunk 15 games ago, is the best?

I still think TCQ is our best hitter. I'm not letting a small same of games convince me otherwise.

If Jones rivals Quentin as a hitter with Quentin doing what we hoped Quentin would do, and Konerko continues to hit well this year and Rios does as well as expected and Ramirez hits like he usually does after a slow start and Beckham begins hitting as consistently as he did before he moved to the No. 2 spot in the order last summer and Pierre, who has four 200-hit seasons, gets out of his slump, the White Sox offense isn't so bad.

Of course, you could go through the same exercise with the pitching and conclude that isn't so bad either.
