Athens vs Sparta starts up 2010 on ESPN (of course) and Curt Schilling starts his new career on Baseball Tonight.

Game time temp will be 65 which is amazing for April 4th.

Maybe as cities to visit but not necessarily the baseball teams based there.

I've always enjoyed visiting Boston, going to Fenway and talking to old time Red Sox fans. If people here get annoyed with the Yankees and Red Sox, it is due to the travelling circus of Yankee and Red Sox nations that overrun U.S. Cellular when the Yanks and Red Sox are in town.

In addition, midwesterners don't think much of ESPN's fixation with New York and Boston. Baseball Tonight, for example, seems to think that it provides comprehensive baseball coverage because it covers the Yanks and the Red Sox. Fortunately, the MLB Network covers both the AL and NL quite thoroughly and quite well and, thus, provides an excellent alternative to the Athens-Sparta fixated Baseball Tonight.

I have no love lost for either team, but you have to admit that it's a good way to start the season, especially in playing in Fenway.

Much better than two random teams playing in Japan.

Regardless of TV revenue, I really wish they'd start in Cincinnati every opening day, as was the tradition for many years.

What a great and novel idea, the Yankees vs. the BoSox on opening night.
Who woulda thunk it?

Isn't it usually traditional for the team that won the World Series the previous year to start the next season at home? Why is this game in Boston?

Pretty disappointed in tonight's game. I'm usually able to choose a team to pull for, but that isn't the case with Boston/NY. I'll root for the asteroid.

I will not :)

It doesn't get any better than this

BTW this game does NOT count on the maximium appearences for Sunday Night Baseball as ESPN2 is blacked out in NY and NE for YES and NESN.

So expect to see more of Athens vs Sparta :)

I can hardly wait.

Me too. We all know that the only thing of interest in MLB is the Red Sox and Yankees. ESPN loves it (of course), but I have little interest in whether the super rich or the obscenely rich team wins.

Let's all hope 2010 is another season where the Yanks or Red Sox spend their way to a pennant!(they won 6 of 10 in the decade just ended) Baseball Fever, Catch It!!!

Will you cut it out with that little ****ing bull**** line? Maybe your cutesy self-serving "Athens/Sparta" **** line goes over cutesy with the other Carmine clad *******s, but over here it makes you come off as a prick.

Well, it was good to see the Yankees lose. Fenway, anyone know why Neil Diamond wore a jacket that said "Keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn" on the back?

Quick check of wikipedia and apparently he was born in 1941 and grew up in Brooklyn. Makes sense.

I was at this game and cheering for the Yankees. Joba pitches very slowly. Damaso Marte wet his pants in a pressure situation -- shocking.

This morning, both of the NY tabloids are focusing on Jorge Posada's passed ball as the key to the Yankees' loss last night.

The key to NYY's loss is the fact that they have Damaso Marte and Chan Ho Park in the bullpen.

I pretty much agree with this. Both are great cities that I've enjoyed visiting. Before gentrification Boston was very much a neighborhood town, perhaps more so than any in the US. It's the constant browbeating of the sports media that wears on me. It's not going to make me hate on the two cities or really good fans of the two teams like Fenway.

Most of us here have other teams we cheer for as well. As long the White Sox fandom isn't compromised, I'm cool with anyone cheering for their second-favorite.
