Mike Cuellar, one of four Baltimore Orioles pitchers to win 20 games in 1971, died today of stomach cancer at the age of 72. Cuellar also won the Cy Young Award. Of those four 20-game winners from 1971, Jim Palmer is the lone survivor. Along with Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson are deceased.

They talk about Ripken's streak and DiMaggio's 56-game streak as unbreakable. The way the game has changed in having situational pitchers, it's hard to imagine another team ever having four starters with 20 wins a piece.

Rest in peace.

Sad news. I really admired the Orioles back in that day. They just seemed to have the complete formula to beat you. They were always stacked with great pitching and Cuellar was as good as anyone in MLB from 1968-74. Those years seem like the day before yesterday. Time flies. RIP Mike.

Mike and his "Cuban Forkball..." aka spitter.

He threw one to Dick Allen in a game in early 1973 and Dick roofed it at old Comiskey Park.

He was a hell of a pitcher though.

The manager was not bad either.

The manager was not bad either. He is probably my all time favorite.

That Baltimore team from the early 70's was one of my favs. Mark Belanger,Frank and Brooks Robinson,Don Buford, Elrod Hendricks, and the aforementioned pitchers. Earl the Pearl at the helm. That franchise sure fell from grace once free agency arrived it seems.

RIP Mike

I saw Mike pitch several times at Old Comiskey. Rest in peace, Mr Cuellar.
