I'll be there on either the 20th or 21st of March...I'm leaning towards the 20th, because I specifically want to see Camelback Ranch Park.

Still debating on going. If I do go, it will probably be between 3/14 and 3/20.

I'm driving to Denver and then from Denver to Phoenix in March. Will be going to an Indians game on the 18th, the Cubs-Sox game in Glendale on the 19th, and then maybe the game on the 20th before going to the Hawks game that night. I'm then flying back to Chicago on the 21st.

I'm looking forward to the 3/20 game, and getting together with Manders, Chisoxfanatic, and whoever else is there.

Spawn, it'd be great to see you--and Mrs. Spawn?--there also. Along with Skobabe and Liz and whoever else makes it out here! :D:

I would so love to go ... not totally out of the question yet !
However , airfare stinks big time -- I keep checking to see if it gets lower and it doesn't :(

My Spring Break correlates w S.T. so I would really like to go ---
I hear CBR is beautiful too and I have never visited Phoenix and hear it is nice ...

Maybe I should just do it and pay the big bucks for airfare and GO !

don't post much here , big time lurker

If you do make it out here, I hope you enjoy it. CBR is very nice, and the Valley isn't too bad either!

Please keep us posted about your plans, Soxlady8.

I'll be there for the Sox/Cubs came on the 3/18 (and Blackhawks/Coyotes on 3/20).

As for the poster who said that airfare prices suck, I managed to get round trip airfare +3 nights in the hotel the Blackhawks are staying in for $625 total. I think that is a pretty good deal.

Mine and the boyfriends airfare is $576 round trip for 9 days.

It looks like I might be able to swing a brief trip to Arizona for three days
March 28-30 !! I see on the Sox Web site that tickets for the Monday and Tuesday games are available. Airfare is high, but my family unit I think is gonna collect dough for me . The dough will help cut down on the cost I will pay for the airfare !
I have hotel issues/questions/comments ... It looks like all the hotels in Glendale are sold out and/or really high !! There are some hotels like 8-11 miles away that are reasonable such as Candlewood Suites , Ramada Plaza , Quality Inn, Four Points Sheraton etc. etc. I will most likely rent a car .
Is the Phoenix highway/road system friendly for a person who is used to Chicago traffic ? Is it pretty easy to navigate --?
Anyone know of these hotels ? I have been researching on Expedia and they look fairly nice --

Thanks all -- if this happens I will be soooooooo thrilled.
It is my birthday next week and this would be one of the best presents ever !!

Sorry to inform, but my boyfriend and I had to cancel our plans to go to Phoenix next month. We were going to book everything last night, but then he noticed that he wasn't able to get the free flight he thought he was going to be able to use for the trip. He was going to pay for the hotel and car with his free flight while I paid for my flight, but it just turned out to be way too expensive without his free flight. I'll be using some of the money I'm saving for Hawks' playoff tickets and for Sox games this coming season.

I was looking forward to going, but I hope all of you guys have fun regardless.

The Phoenix surface streets can be confusing at times, with the mountains getting in the way, but if you stay close to one of the interstates, you should be fine. You will need to rent a car, and you probably should do that soon.

I don't know much about the hotels, since I never need one, but there are plenty that are located along the highways, and Camelback Ranch is not too far from the 101.

Hope this helps, and have fun!

My mom is going to pay for the hotel !!!

The only thing I have to spot is car rental and spending money
for food and a trip or two to the casino(s) to play some poker !!

Lodging near the Ranch seems awful pricey , where are some good places to stay that are not so far way ? Someone here mentioned Goodyear

Just got my tickets for the Sox/Padres on Saturday, March 20th. I know Manders will be there; who else?

LOL, I had a hard time convincing the guy that the seats he thought were the best available actually weren't. In Arizona, the best available anything is the part that's in the shade. So, if you're ordering tickets and you want shade, Sections 110-115, Rows 17 to 22 (last five) are the ones you want.

We're in Section 112, Row 19, Seats 1&2. And IIRC, that's not too far from the Miller Lite guy. Woo-HOO!!

Anyone tailgating that day?

Yeah, what IS it with the lemonade fixation? Those guys are all over the place! It was the same way in Tucson. Is lemonade supposed to counteract sun poisoning or something? I don't recall the vendors at the other teams' parks being obsessed by lemonade. :?:

Well, for openers, you will need sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap. The Arizona sun is not to be fooled with, and it creeps up on you. You will also want to be sure to drink a lot of water.

Depending on what games you're going to, traffic can tie up quickly, so allow yourself time, although if you're staying in the Avondale/Glendal area, you should be fairly close to Camelback Ranch. And try to park as close as you can to the facility (sun again).

Have fun! :D:

I second the recommendation for sunscreen, I've been out there the last week and can't even begin to count the number of Chicagoans who have come out for the morning practices and come out at the end of the day fried. Anyone coming down for practices will have much better access than last year, as the complex is a lot more fan friendly this year. They have the gift shop, ticket office, and certain concession stands open for the practices, as well as having closer contact with the players. Bring some bottled water if you don't want to buy anything at the park, as the sun really is a whole lot worse than people anticipate.

Yep. And it's worse when the weather is like it has been lately--overcast with scattered rain. That sun will get you anyway!

What time do the morning practices start? How close can you get this year to the players?

Gates for practice open at 9, with players usually coming out around 930ish. Some guys come out earlier or later, depending on a variety of things. Most of the guys won't sign in the morning, since they're on their way to work and have fairly tight schedules, but will stop on their way back to the clubhouse.

There is a tunnel from the Sox clubhouse out to the practice fields that is fenced off from the fans where the guys will come sign, and to watch the practices you're basically no more than like 30 feet away from the field. For the first week, they had a lot of stuff going on in the back fields, which meant you couldn't really be much closer than a full field away from the players, but when they're on one of the front 2 fields you can walk up to the fence (as long as you don't bother the players) and watch. The only exceptions are the dugouts, as they're roped off, but everything else is pretty much fair game.

For those of you who went last year, you'll remember fences along the walkway by the front 2 fields. This year, they've taken out a lot of the fences, only keeping them where the walkway is elevated from the level of the fields, which allows for more access to the fields.

a few years back my best friend and I flew to Los Angeles and then rented a car to drive to Las Vegas . The weather was 69 and partly cloudy (w a little sun here in there ). We rented a convertible and the drive was spectacular , however , a few hours after we arrived in VEGAS we were RED as can be !!! We were FRIED !!!!
We joke about the pictures ... we called our selves ROCK LOBSTERS like the B52 song !!

I will not be messing w the sun in Arizona !!!

Most of the shopping and restaurants are right down the street from the ballpark at the Westgate Citycenter. Its right down the 101 from Avondale, and I think theres a variety of things out in the Avondale/Tolleson area, but not nearly as much stuff as at westgate.

I will be in Phoenix from March 11th -17th. I am going to the KC & Col. games (15 & 16). Are these the best places to get autographs? Are there other locations available and where might be the best spot? This is my first time down so I am trying to get a good understanding. Thanks

I'll be there for a couple of games in March. Someone mentioned above that the practices start around 9:00-9:30 but when do they typically end? Is there a difference for when they have night games vs day games? I'm not a huge autograph hound and probably would be fine just going to the games but I'd like to check out the practices at a time that makes sense. For example I get in early on the 15th so I was going to head over from the airport to check out practice but since its a night game I don't know if they'll still be out there. Tuesday is a day game so does that change the practice schedule too?

True. Low 80s should be very pleasant, with hopefully a nice, gentle breeze.

Once again, though, do not underestimate the sun, especially if it's partly cloudy. A friend of mine was out here a few years ago and got burned to a crisp on a cloudy day. He didn't even realize it was happening.

Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

7 of us going out, and the highlight will be the March 20 White Sox game at 1:00pm followed by the Blackhawks/Coyotes game at 6:00pm. Tailgating before the hockey game should be great after spending the day watching the Sox!

Is there anyway we could strike a deal with the Dodgers to replace Vienna dogs with Dodger dogs?

They're ****ing delicious.

I had my first dodger dog yesterday and it was ****ing awful. I figured I had to try it, but came away hugely disappointed.

The nice thing about next season's Spring Training is I will be living about 6 blocks away from the Sox ST facility.

The bad thing about it is I won't get to see as many Sox games that actually count. I'll probably subscribe to the web streams from mlb.com. I've read mixed reactions about that service, but I can't imagine a summer without WS baseball.
