Agreed. Not a huge fan of how the numbers seem to rotate closely like that. But it's just a number, so no worries.

Flowers changes from 39 to 26 and Hudson from 54 to 41, as well.

So long as I never see another player wear 35 or 56 I'm cool.

True, but we also weren't talking about re-signing Dye and Contreras as recently as three hours ago.

Why do the Sox seem to re-use numbers so often? Seems like they just keep using the same 25 numbers over and over.

Are they that cheap that they just keep ordering them every year and just get the names sown on after they acquire the player?

Juan Pierre and Lance Johnson both attended the University of South Alabama.
Lance became a mentor to Juan when he would return to work out with the collegiate team.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't 100% at the player's discretion ... if the number is available and management hasn't steered them away from some non-retired numbers (6, 35) they're fair game.

I believe every team has this issue. Only certain numbers are popular, especially in baseball. Its just a thing.

I don't like that #23 is still in use. :(: Especially not on a player who plays a majority of his games at 3B. That privilege was reserved for a player by the name of Robin Ventura.

Robin was a great guy and a good player for the Sox. But if that becomes the criteria for retiring numbers, we're going to have three-digit numbers on players before long.

If I were in charge of number retirement, it would be Hall of Famers only.
