I was going to say, if this had been a thread for "best Sox manager of the decade", it would have been an extremely trivial question.

This whole subject reminds me of a very funny scene that was caught live on TV back maybe 7 yrs ago. A Sox pitcher was getting rocked, and the camera panned down to dugout and there was Jerry Manuel and Nardi just sitting there, speechless and staring out to the field like 2 deer in the headlights. Then down the bench maybe 30 feet was Harold, his eyes looked to be completely shut the only missing was his teddy bear.

Sure am glad those days are gone.

Ozzie hands down

This is what happens on Ozzie's bench:

Honestly though, this is like the fourth Tribune poll in a row in which the White Sox were landslide winners.

Harold was the bench coach in 2005 and I never saw him talking to Ozzie. Ozzie and Coop talked frequently and enthusiastically. I'd say the real bench coach was Coop that year.

Harold did not like that job, which is why he moved to first base. IIRC, he was going to leave, but Ozzie switched him with Raines so he stayed.

Just to clarify, Raines never became bench coach. When Baines went to first, Raines wasn't renewed.

05: Baines bench, Raines 1st, Cora 3rd
06: Cora bench, Baines 1st, Razor Shines 3rd
07-Current: Cora bench, Baines 1st, Cox 3rd

Last week I was looking up coaches from earlier this decade. Although I remember Bruce Kimm at 3B, I have no memory of Rafael Santana as the 1B coach is '03.

No, Raines did become the bench coach in 2006. I'm absolutely positive he was there that season because it was my first season working there. He was the only member of the staff that was let go that year.

Shines was promoted in 2007, which was his only year up here. The current coaching staff has been together since 2008.
