Which would seem to indicate he is close to signing with the Red Sox.

Damn those Sawks sitting out the offseason again. How will they ever compete this year?

They turned into the Yankees in my opinion.

I don't think they are at that level yet. Just poking fun at Fenway and that outrage filled article at the possibility that the Red Sox wouldn't be major players in free agency this offseason. As if they couldn't compete otherwise.

The Sawx are really throwing in the towel

The only thing that will make me happy is if Halladay is traded to PHI and signs there long term because we all know that if he's a free agent next season that BOS and NY will be breaking out their checkbooks once again.

At 5 years $85 million, Am I the only one who thinks Lackey is on a decline here and not worth that kind of money?

I think he is a great pitcher. He was hurt a little last year but is a work horse and a huge competitor.

So do Scutaro and Lackey count as making a splash in the offseason, or do they need to sign Bay or Holliday too?

He was hurt in 2008 too.

He's not very durable, doesn't work that deep into games, gives up a lot of hits, doesn't K a lot of guys, and has some control issues. He doesn't even win a lot of games.

For $85 million, if they want a competitor, sign Paul Byrd again. At least CC is a horse who gets results.

He's not Carlos Silva by any means but he's not an ace either.

Boston had a good 1-2 punch but some horrendous back end of rotation. Lackey will be their #3 although I do agree he is seriously overpaid. Unfortunately, Lackey could demand that much money since he was the best pitcher in the market.

He was the best of the FA's, but in trades, the better two were swapped today (if it goes through).

I'm sure Halladay's price just went up in the extension talks with PHI.

Wow. $17 million a year...... For John LAAckey.

I think Lackey is a good, solid pitcher, but not a great one. 5 years $85 million is way too much, IMO.

BOS outbid themselves. It sure does not appear that LAA, NYM, or NYY was going to come close to the years or $$$$.

One would wonder if by acquiring Lackey that might be more willing to deal Buchholz in a package for Adrian Gonzalez. Though that would certainly weaken the rotation.

They do have Dice-K and Wake. They would provide a nice back end of the rotation if the Sawx were to trade Clay for Gonzalez, especially since they have such a solid top 3. I would think if they have the opportunity to get a package that the Padres find appealing, they would do it.

Given what Burnett was given last year by the Yankees, Lackey's money isn't that far off. Burnett and Lackey are both injury risks, but when healthy, Lackey is a solid top tier or #2 pitcher. Assuming they get a decent amount of starts from Beckett, Lackey, Dice-K, and Lester, that's a dynamite 1-4 starters. A lot of health risk, but a lot of reward.
