He's shown some pop and throws the leather. Time to move him to Center Field.

I still think they are ridiculous, but I am glad Mark added some hardware. Well deserved.Yep. Look no further than SS. 35 year-old Derek Jeter won his fourth undeserved award, and it came after he was three years slower than in his last "gold glove" season.

Either way, congrats to Buehrle.

It seems like one of the only baseball accomplishments left for Buehrle to achieve is the Cy Young. He has a World Series ring, perfect game, no hitter, gold glove, and hit a home run this season. What else could anybody ask for?!

True, same with Hunter many years. Congrats to Mark though as it's good he was recognized for this defense in addition to his pitching.

A well-deserved honor for MB. Finally the voters get that right.

Talking for a second about Hunter - yes, he's good, but how many of the 9 has he deserved? He may be entering "elite" territory, but considering how these awards have been given in the past to some people, I'm not sure how easily he'd be in "elite" territory.

I'm pretty sure he could. Teixiera is a damn good first baseman. I didn't see a lot of Yankee games, but I'm pretty sure A-Rod and Jeter weren't perfect with all of their throws.

I saw him several times when he was with the Braves; he made some great picks to save Chipper Jone's wild throws.

I doubt that anything more than a small fraction of the votes came from people who were aware Buehrle hit a home run this year.

Offense doesn't matter in the Gold Glove vote, although it might get a player noticed, and it's more likely that a player will win a Gold Glove if he is noticed. Mike Squires won a Gold Glove at first base one year when he only started 73 games there (and only came in as a defensive replacement in 15 more). He only hit .265 and didn't hit any home runs. But writers spent much of the season writing about what a great glove he had, despite being the shortest true first baseman in the leaague.

This year Mark Buehrle got noticed by pitching a perfect game.

Hmmm, you sure about that? Way, way, way too many occasions since 1990 (at the latest) have witnessed offensive players adding GG hardware to their mantles. Especially when we had the great Rafael Palmeiro win one when he played about 30 games at his position that season?

As far as Spanky was concerned, there were no other choices and that was in pre-ESPN prominence days.

The Gold Glove has nothing to do with offense. Sometimes the players who get it are not deserving, but the voters don't take offense into consideration. You might believe another player is more deserving at a given position in a given year -- and you may well be right -- and if the most deserving player had been seen by more voters, he might have ended up winning the award.

All because he hit a home run in interleague play! Who says this award isn't effected by performance at the plate!!!

This was definitely exciting news the other day. Mark is such a class act; although I think of a few other recent Sox pitchers who could deserve consideration (Danks, and especially Garland. Jon was a hell of a fielding pitcher.)

Well done Mark, well done.

Scoff if you will, but it has to do with laziness, not offense. The award is voted on by managers and coaches from the same league with voters prohibited from voting on a player on their team. Some take it seriously, but they seem the exception. Torii Hunter didn't win the Gold Glove because of his offense, for example, and the season he was injured (on defense) and played less than 100 games, he hit less than .270. He still won the award. In 2006, Eric Chavez was not just inferior to Joe Crede on defense. He had a dismal offensive year. His batting average was 40 points lower than Crede's, and he hit eight fewer home runs. Chavez still won the award, just as he had won it the previous five years.

With expansion and the unbalanced schedule, teams don't get a good look at other teams outside their division. When you play two three-game series against a team in another division, rather pedestrian fielders may have great defensive games. Ron Swoboda making a great catch in the 1969 World Series, but that didn't make him a great outfielder. Coaches know this. They end up voting for people who have won the award in the past more than they vote for people they see playing great against them.

Other players get votes when they do things that might get them noticed. A slick fielder may not get noticed until he has a breakout year offensively. In Mark Buehrle's case, people started talking about his defense after he pitched a perfect game.
