I'm not sure if this is a joke but I'm sure he has never come onto the field high. Could be a one time deal where he hardly does but got caught by chance with it. I'll let it slide. (We all know me letting it slide means everyone should:smile:)

Typical answer. Ask any pothead what percentage of the American population smokes, and you'll get completely unbiased, well-though-out, reality-based answers like 95-97%.

I'm not sure if this was being facetious, but as other posters stated before, it's just common sense.

These are guys in their early to mid 20's. I can say that I don't partake in said activity but I can honestly say that I am part of the minority in that category. It may be frowned upon, but people are still gonna do it. Even though we may not see it, we know it's happening.

Well first, I'm not a pot-head, but I don't think you have to be one to know that a pretty large percentage of people from all sorts of backgrounds and social standings smoke weed - some occasionally and some much more than that.

While 95% is ludicrous, I bet if the MLB decided to suspended all players that tested positive immediately and without warning, lots of teams would be scrambling to field a team that day.

Well, I see the back-pedal already in motion on this as we've now amended the original statement of "tons" and "a majority of the general public" to "a large percentage....some less than others."

Keep lowering that, and I'll let you know when you're grounded with a correct answer, which would be around 5-10% of the population. I can post links to back that number up, not just based on heresay at Plainfield High School.

I'm pretty certain the reason why most people on the board were not surprised was because that Tim is in his early twenties and for god's sake, he lives in San Francisco, California. He fits the target gender and target age for a substance that has plagued this sect of society. No one ever said "the majority of America smokes pot".

Completely forgot about it being effectively legal there. That certainly makes his arrest for it a lot dumber. I visited my sister in Denver in September, in her neighborhood is a medical marijuana facility, across the street from it was a pizza place with the name 420, which is open 1130pm-5am and is delivery only.

Interesting.

I think a lot of professional athletes smoke weed during their off seasons.

I used to live next door to a few UM basketball players and whenever you'd walk by their door, it reeked of weed.

I only speak from my own experience, but this (my) generation seems to enjoy weed as much as alcohol. And they generally think that alcohol has more potential for harm.

By the way, I'm 21 for reference.

Percentile of Pro athletes smoking weed is same as Accountants, Construction workers, Salesmen etc. You get the idea. Then you can break it down to everyday users, occasional users, once-in-a-blue moon users etc.

Boy - you're a creative reader. I never said the majority of the general public and neither did anyone else. And "tons" really just means a bunch, but it you want to be all technical about it - a ton is 2000 pounds. If an average baseball player is 200 pounds, that's about 20 per ton. So for it to be "tons", it would have to be at least 40. I'd bet my house on that number.

I guess I've never understood why people seem to think Professional athletes are immune to addictions, arrests, or anything else us "ordinary" folk are. If anything, the glare of the spotlight may even pressure more to use drugs or whatever their choice of vice may be. It boils down to we are all mere mortals of flesh and blood.

Funny thing happened as I was on this thread, a good friend of mine, also a State Trooper comes into my office. I tell him about Linecum, I mention to him my $200 speeding tix in Wisconsin. We talk of profiling...he tells me since I'm a single male in his 40's, that I fit the profile of a pot smoker. He said and I quote "Seems like all you single guys have weed". So I asked him that would I be more of a fit than say a 23 yr old playing Heavy Metal. He said they fit profile too.

Don't want to hijack but I found that interesting....

That's ages 15-64, so I would think when you narrow it down to, say, 15-30, the number would jump at least a little bit, but I'll use the 12%.

With a 40 man roster and 30 teams, that's 1200 active players. If pot usage among major league baseball players reflects pot usage among regular Americans, that would mean there 144 professional baseball players that indulge at least occasionally.

That really wouldn't surprise me at all. It's better than the coke rage of the 80's, imho.
