It ought to be quite a series. Which team do you pick to win it?

It's a close call but I'm hoping that the Phils can win it in 5 or 6. I don't think they were a fluke last year or this year. One question: have the Phils said who will DH in the games in New York?

The Yankees need to be shown that they cannot simply buy a World Series. They've already bought a pennant.

I want to see the Phillies win in six, just so they get to celebrate on the field at new Yankee Stadium.

I'm glad I'm not an Indians fan. They get to watch C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee starting Game 1 for their new teams. I'm glad they're both out of Cleveland.

PKalltheway

I'll go with the Yankees. I hope that Philly can pull off back-to-back titles, but it's so difficult to do. Heck, no NL team has done it since the Big Red Machine in '75 and '76. Ironically enough, the Reds faced the Yankees in 1976 and made pretty easy work of them to get their second consecutive title. I don't think the Phillies will do that, though. I'll say Yankees in seven.

Foulke You

Yankees will win in 5 games. The only way I see it going six is if Cliff Lee can match CC pitch for pitch.

Please please please please please let it be the Phils. I'd rather not hear how Yankee Stadium is the stuff of legends and how the new stadium should be considered a shrine since it brought a World Series title in its first year. Aside from that, it would be pretty cool to see back-to-back titles from an NL team.

The Yankmees and the NY press are waaaayyyy too confident about their chances.Perhaps they

I couldn't believe the Yankee fan who called the Power Alley show on MLB Homeplate (XM) and was all cranked up because he said that "no one is giving the Yankees a chance; everybody is picking the Phillies."

Yawn.....the Yankees buy themselves another championship.

I don't think I'm even that interested in watching one inning of the World Series this year. To me, this isn't what competitive sports is all about - just having the most over-the-top, twice-as-rich-as-the-next-richest team simply buy an ace pitcher and an all-star slugger to make them a shoe in for the pennant. Baseball fever, catch it!

I have hope that evil will not pull through.

The Yankees need to be shown that they cannot simply buy a World Series. They've already bought a pennant.

Yep, must be nice when you can have a payroll that's $80 million higher than the next highest spending AL team. EIGHTY MILLION more! That's like almost the entire White Sox payroll that's the difference between the Yankees and high payroll teams like Boston and the Angels.

But the Yankees have always bought up good players going back decades, so that makes it perfectly alright and a fine baseball tradition!

One of my friends told me that since the Yankees are the AL rep and he's a Sox fan, he's rooting for the Yankees.

No. Stinkin'. Way.

I'd rather never watch baseball again before I root for the Yankees.

I actually like the Phillies and like them even more because of their World Series opponent.

That said, I just have a bad feeling the Yankees will get their hard-earned and well-deserved championship.

Maybe I'll even listen to John Sterling when they clinch so I can hear him scream, "Theeeeee Yankeeeees Win!"

Yanks in 6.

Red Sox "nation" crumbles and becomes a territory. Maybe a rural county in Nevada.

Seriously, the Yanks have the intangible to make it happen. These are two well-matched teams, so it will be a good series to watch if you're a baseball fan. I don't care if the Yanks "bought" the title because that is bull****. If spending a boatload of bucks bought you a title, then the Yanks would have had several WS titles this century under their belts already.

As far as Cliff Lee is concerned, keep in mind he was an unkown in the NL when he got traded to the Phils. That helped him with his tremendous performance with them. Now he is facing a team that knows him well.

Also, if it pisses off Red Sox "nation," it can't be all that bad.:D:

2001 series went 7 games, as it did the following year when the Angels topped the Giants. The Marlins won in 6 in 2003 over the Yanks. But every other World Series this decade has either been a sweep or gone 5 games. Recent World Series have not been close, exciting affairs.

I'm really trying to sit and enjoy this game but I can't help but be depressed. The Sox aren't in it. Two bloated East Coast teams battling it out (one of them the hated Yanks), it's raining at the ballpark, and Joe Buck's monotone voice combined with Tim McCarver's yammering is making me want to switch the channel...but...it is the World Series. I'm going to stick with it for now. Sigh...

I'm actually a bit surprised they let him pitch the 9th. He's supposed to pitch game 4 and 7 both on short rest so I'd think taking him out after 100 pitches would have been preferable to letting him extend himself. Save that arm strength for later in the series.

I think it will really depend on where the Phils are at in the series if they let him pitch in Game 4. They could realistically let Joe Blanton go in Game 4, and have Lee ready for a Game 5, if necessary.

I never leave games early. and I've been to some pretty horrible games this year alone, like 14-0 against Toronto and 12-5 against Minnesota in the freezing cold. If you don't stay the whole game your not a true fan in my mind.

You should never leave a baseball game early. It's the one sport where, technically, no lead is insurmountable because you can't run out of time.

I completely agree with everyone's points about not leaving a game early, especially a world series game.... BUT, to defend Yankee fans, they have a world series on average every 3 years. Its not exactly a rare occasion in NY. Also you have to be richer than a god to attend a game there, so I don't think we're talking about Joe Average Fan either.

I'm actually a bit surprised they let him pitch the 9th. He's supposed to pitch game 4 and 7 both on short rest so I'd think taking him out after 100 pitches would have been preferable to letting him extend himself. Save that arm strength for later in the series.
That's what I was thinking, but then again they're probably thinking that he only has one or two more starts left for the entire season, so who cares. He's got the entire winter to rest.

I'm not nearly as convinced that Howard did not catch that on the fly as Joe & Tim are. But, hey, they're the Fox-appointed experts.

The call did not deserve the scrutiny that they were giving it. It was close enough to be an out as far as I'm concerned. If video replay was used, you could argue there wasn't even conclusive evidence to overrule the ump.

In hindsight, the biggest clue that Howard didn't catch it is that he came up firing the ball to second. If I caught that ball on a fly, my first instinct would have been to hold the glove up and go step on first for the unassisted double-play.

He did start to go to first then he threw it although maybe he was just getting an angle. Looked like he started to haul straight o first though. Seems like if he knew he didn't catch it he would have went to second without hesitation.

You could probably make a case for A-Rod or even Damon to win the award. If Rivera closes out one of the next two games unscathed, you can consider him too, but Utley has the most impressive stats of anybody and is having a historic Series at that. A World Series MVP has been on the losing team before, and it can happen again. It'll be a great injustice if Utley doesn't win the award regardless of the outcome.

Based on what has happened so far, it should definitely be Utley but we still have one and potentially two games left for more heroics. Something a Yankees player like Damon, Rivera, or A-Rod does tonight (or tomorrow) could sway the vote in their favor should the Yankees win. If the Phillies win, I think there is no question that Utley is the MVP. However, I don't see Philly taking two in NY.

Matsui making a good case to take the award away from Utley.

There are only 6 more innings of this MLB season. Philly won't come back.

Even if the Phillies come back and win tonight, I don't see them winning Game 7. They just keep going to their 'pen.

No. You cannot "buy" a World Series. If you could, then the Yanks would have many more.

Also, by saying they're the first are you saying no other team won it with the largest payroll that year in MLB?

Did the White Sox "buy" a World Series in '05?

The Yanks have not "bought" the World Series, they played like they wanted to win it.

Crazy comparison! The Sox payroll was middle-of-the-road, and a high percentage of the guys came from within. I can't recall many fat contracts on that team.

I mentioned the '05 Good Guys as proof a team cannot "buy" a World Series title.

They bought it because all those deals were made last offseason and it's happened in the first season those guys are with the team. This series is the ultimate proof baseball needs a salary cap.

I don't think they have blown anything. They're an excellent team
that is just getting beat by a better one.
