With the Tigers win tonight, the 2009 White Sox have officially been eliminated from the playoffs contention

Here's to a much better season next year with more consistency and maybe even a winning streak or 2. Maybe a consistently good offense. Maybe a solid bullpen. Maybe a much improved defense. :gulp:

Let 2010 be one to remember. For the right reasons.

Geez, you had that post ready to go, didn't you? Inge just stabbed the final out about five seconds ago.

Yeah I was typing it up during the 9th.

I figured they'd be safe with a 3 run lead but I almost had to save it for another day.

This is one of my biggest sports pet peeves. You cannot be eliminated from the playoffs unless you are a participant in the playoffs. The proper way to phrase this is that the Sox have been eliminated from playoff contention!

With Detroit's win tonight, the Sox will are officially eliminated. Det. has 4 games left with Minnesota and with the Det victory tonight they guarantee at least one of them would get to 83 wins.

Brian26

I think the Sox are eliminated, though, since the Twins and Tigers play each other three more times. The tragic number doesn't take that into account, but there's no way they can finish above both Detroit AND Minnesota, even if they win the rest of their games.

Edit- Check that, Twins/Tigers play four more times....the 4th game falls on Oct 1.

gjdodger
09-24-2009, 10:38 PM
Nope. Sox are out. Four of Detroit's games are against the Twins. If they lose all their games, Minnesota wins at least 83. The best the Sox can do is 82.

No, he or she didn't. The Tigers couldn't win another game the rest of the season, and we'd have to win the rest of our games to hop over the Tigers. But, there's a little problem here...The Twins have 4 left with the Tigers. If the Twins win all of those 4 (which we'd need for them to do to hop over the Tigers), the Twins would end up with 1 more win than us even if we win the rest of our games.

We have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Yes, the Chicago Tribune lists the Tragic Number as 2 but says that if Detroit were to win tonight then we would be done because of the scenarios already mentioned.

Now that we're eliminated, does that mean that Ozzie will still trot out Dye, Rios, etc. out every night and keep Flowers on the bench?

He'll play the vets against the Tigers. He'll justify it by saying he owes it to Gardenhire to try to win those games.

Given how bad the vets have played, I'm not sure why playing them is "trying to win."

I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm just saying I think that's what Ozzie will do.

...oh and by the way, Thanks for ****ing nothing 2009 White Sox for mailing it in these last 2 months.

This teams had many holes at the start of the season (admit it, Kenny. Just freaking admit it already). But it was even more depressing to see our "revamped" team totally stink up the joint after late July.

Remember when we were all "drooling" over the Sox dream lineup when Quentin returned from the DL and then we added Rios? What a ****ing joke. That lineup was the biggest flop since New Coke.

Will we ever make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons?

We are the only one of the original 16 franchises to never make the post season in back-to-back years. I'd hazard to guess that a good number of the expansion teams have accomplished this too.

On the bright side, this team's trend has been to close the gap on post season appearances over the last 50 years: 1959-'83 (24 years), '83-'93 (10 yrs), '93-'00 (7 yrs), '00-'05 (5 yrs), '05-'08 (3 yrs)....so that means we're due next year. Start printing the playoff tickets now!

I would have loved to see them win and held out hope even after that godawful roadtrip-but there just wasn't enough there-and all the bitching, swearing, wallowing and second-guessing will do nothing to change that. So I say here's to 2010. May there be a much better team on the field.

Don't forget Dye and Konerko's back to back 300th homeruns in Detoilet in April. That had never been done before.

For all intents and purposes, this season was over when Contreras made the bobble against the Red Sox.

This team has enough talent. This team has a leadership core that is about as mental as any I have ever seen. Damn, do they get down on themselves!

The moves that were made in 2009 bode well for 2010. Peavy makes the rotation deadly. Rios will (hopefully) adjust and play some good baseball for the Sox, and Thome's departure helps accelerate the de-emphasis of the long ball mentality.

I will be very interested to see if Konerko is shopped or if Dye gets re-signed.

Adios to the 2009 season, which was about as annoying as 2003. You rarely get to see a team find so many different ways to lose. The fact that they don't even show up anymore tells you a ton about the leadership of this ballclub. Ick.

Let me add to that list.

Back to back 300 home runs by PK and Dye.

The return of Pods.

Steve Stone back on TV broadcasts.

The President throwing out the first pitch of the All Star Game wearing the Sox jacket.

"The Catch"

Kenny has some work to do over the off season; but I feel really good on their chances to be competitive next season.
