I vaguely hearing somewhere that he played baseball with Ken "Hawk" Harrelson. Might have been on the 1967 Red Sox that did not win the World Series. Just can't remember where I might have heard that.......

Happy Birthday Yaz! For all I have heard about him over the years from Hawk, I can't remember ever hearing him talk or seeing him on tv (I'm 23). Does he not want to participate in the game anymore or talk about the goings on in baseball? Seems like he would be asked about his views on steroids, Bonds, Rose, etc.

I will make sure Hawk knows about this being his 70th birthday and I am sure Ken will briefly say something nice about Yaz.

Yaz has become a recluse since the tragic death of his son Mike a few years ago. However he did show up in Cooperstown for Jim Rice.

Before Mike Yastrzemski's death, of course, he stole his father's identity for financial gain. That was a very strange and sad story.

At one time, it looked like Mike Yastrzemski might play in the White Sox outfield. He got as high as AAA Vancouver and was doing quite well early in 1988 before I interviewed him for a story. I bought him and his roommate, Jack Hardy, many beers after which Yastrzemski went into a career-ending slump.

I don't think you'll even need to mention it to Hawk, because he'll say something nice about him regardless, like he seems to do at least once a week. He has a hard-on for Yaz, Drysdale, and the Betrucci Boys.

I actually remember seeing Mike in a White Sox uniform for a brief period of time. Can't remember if it was '87 or '88 but sometime around then. Sad story about him.

Happy 70th b-day, Yaz! :happybday

I am certain Mike played for the White Sox in the 1986 Crosstown at Wrigley

I have a thought that Pete Rose's son may have played in that game as well but I may be dead wrong on that.

I posted the following on the BostonRadio.org listserv

42 years ago today a Boston DJ wanted to do something for a Red Sox player who was turning 28. The DJ was familar with a ragtime piece from 1923 which I link to here

His producer-boardman told me he did it in one take

So Happy 70th birthday Captain Carl and fond memories of the best morning man Boston has ever known, the late Jess Cain.

Jess was honored after his death by the Chicago based Radio Hall of Fame which HOPEFULLY will someday be built.

Hawk was NOT aware and was very happy to be told.

Can someone let me know what Hawk says today because I am working the Baltimore feed before flying back to Boston for the games with Chicago
