View Full Version : 7 weeks left! Week 1: Aug 17-Aug 23

Since the division race is so tight (again), I figured I would start a thread that kept track of the all the games of the Sox, Tigers, and Twins week by week. As fans, that is how we should look at this race: seeing how many games the Sox can pick up in a week on the rest of the competitors in the Central. Last week the Sox went 3-3 on their West Coast trip and picked up 0.5 game on the Tigers who went 3-4 @ BOS and vs KC and picked up a 1 game on MIN who went 2-4 vs KC and vs CLE.

There are 7 weeks left in the season. If the Sox pick up only .5 games a week the rest of the way, they will win the division by 1 game. Just to keep some perspective.

The Sox have 44 games left and 6 left against the Tigers and 6 against the Twins.

The Tigers have 45 games left and 6 left vs the Sox and 7 vs the Twins.

The Twins have 44 games left and 6 left vs the Sox and 7 vs the Tigers.

EDIT: I decided to go Mon-Sun as far as the weeks are concerned since the season and most series end on a Sunday

I don't consider myself a dark cloud, but I meant that regular season baseball would soon end, not that the Sox had no chance of making the playoffs. The playoffs are different - it's exciting, yes, but also the beginning of a very long offseason.

I've always liked that dark cloud picture though. It's pretty. :D:

You've done a good job proving that you're not a dark cloud. No dark cloud would call anything pretty. :D:

7 weeks till baseball is over. :whiner:

There are only two possible things that can happen, and both of them are good (from my perspective):

1) The Sox will pick it up, win the division and there will be more than seven weeks of baseball left.

2) The Sox will continue to play mediocre ball, their season will end in seven weeks and I won't have to put up with their bull**** anymore.

Obviously, the first option would be preferable.

The number right now is 48: the number of Sox wins + Tiger losses we need to win the division.

23 road and 21 home left. If we can go .667 at home, there's 14 of the 26. We would then need to go 12-11 on the road.

I think the Tigers lose more than 22, especially with as bad as they've been on the road.

sox need to go 4-2

anyone care to start looking calling the trip of doom?

I think it is realistic to say

get at least 2 vs a Boston team that is skidding overall, and has some holes in that starting staff

get a least 1 from the yankees

win the series in the dome say buh bye to HHH in style and beat a Minn team with bad pitching

take the winnable make up game against a mediocre Cub team that has its way with the Pirates and Nationals of the world but rolls over for any team with a winning record

so get a 6-5 trip, considering the circumstances I would consider that a great success and you have to think that we are still at least right there if we accomplish that and can have a good (4-2) homestand right now

We couldn't capitalize because of our own stupid mistakes when the Tigers dropped 3 of 4 to the BoSox and now this thing is slowing starting to slip away from us.

I know I'll be watching the extra innings rootin' for those Texas Boys and the pesky Mariners tomorrow....it'd be darned nice to go into this series with Baltimore just two games back.....let's sweep those birds!

Given the funk Boston wannabees are in and our success against the Bronx Bummers we might have a prayer....

Heard Beltin' Bill talkin' about a sweep at the Dome....cap it off with that, and I'll be a believer for sure....everybody sing a chorus of "wouldn't it be nice!"

Over on Motown Sports, someone did a parallel schedule between the Sox and Tigers...while the Sox schedule is tougher, the Tigers have pretty tough competition at the same time as the Sox are on their road trip from hell. Tigers go to A's this weekend, then to Angels next week...no picnic, then play the Rays at home for 4. So if the Sox can play decent the next two weeks, I doubt they lose a lot of ground to the tigers.
If nothing crazy happens, it does come down to that last 17 days, where the tigers play 6 vs twins,6 vs Sox...this could be wild.

So the records for the week went

SOX 3-3

Detroit 3-3

Minnesota 5-2

Sox didn't lose any ground with 1st place Detroit and lost 1.5 games between 3rd place Minnesota. We are still 2.5 games out with 6 weeks to play so it isn't the end of the world. Again, if we happen to gain .5 games a week for the rest of the season we will end up at worst, a tie for 1st place.

Go Sox!

Playing KC and Balt at home you would have expected a 5-1 homestand.

We would be a .5 game out of first right now

Even if we had gone an acceptable 4-2, I'm looking at so many "could've" wins and seems like Detroit is pulling them out and we're not. So I agree with the "should be .5 out" but not because we should have gone 5-1, but instead would have expected Seattle to win one of the two games they were leading late.

But, still only 2.5 out and both teams have some tough games this week. Still our season to blow.
