Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but does anyone know what number Alex Rios will wear? I was watching the Comcast pregame show and they showed Rios as "OF #15" under his photo and statline.

I, like many others here on the site, just ordered a Beckham jersey with the #15... :o:

The way Beckham is, I wouldnt be surprised if he immediately gave up his number.

And then he'll buy new jerseys for all the WSI posters who are stuck with the Beckham/15 shirts.

Or maybe just some duct tape.

I just called MLB Shop and the guy on the phone said if there is an official announcement in the next two days the warehouse will be notified and all orders will be put on hold. I was going to put in this order today, but the Rios rumors got me worried.

He assured me if I put the order in tonight and found out tomorrow that it was switching I would be able to change. I know that doesn't help a lot of you, but those waiting until the last minute for the sale like me I think you can go ahead and pull the trigger.

Wow, just realized this. And I was just about to order a Beckham jersey on Saturday, but didn't. I know Beckham really wants #6, but maybe he goes to a different combination, like 24 or 33. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Gordon Beckham will be changing uniform numbers every couple of months now until someone can come up with another idea as to how I'm supposed to afford Alex Rios's contract.

who Rios or Beckham?

Rios.

The Sox may end up giving Beckham #6, though. I don't know, but this is why I would never buy a jersey of a rookie.

Back to Rios...15 may not even be his number of choice, maybe he just took that because he couldn't get something else in Toronto? Maybe he likes 32...no chance of getting that in Toronto.

This is an easy one...Rios will wear number #51..:) Ala Bernie Williams. This way bacon can keep #15. Then everyone is happy.

What do you mean the way he is? Every report and profile i've heard displays that he's very confident and very cocky.

If he can't have 6, then he needs 15. Either that or 51.

Yes.

He seems confident enough in his abilities that he doesnt care what number he wears.

Or Jon Rauch.

How did i luck out?

I was pissed last night, figuring the rookie would give up his number, and i would be out $240.

And i have a game worn Jon Rauch jersey here, that i already removed the name from.

Jason Bere, Mike Bertotti, Terry Forster. Just some of the Sox greats from the past to have donned #51.

As for the Bears, Butkus wore #51, but so did such other linebacking greats as Bruce Herron and Jim Morrissey.

Ahh, Jason Bere. I haven't thought about him in a while. Someone who had great stats in my MLB games :D:.

I'm glad Bacon kept 15, but I still would have worn the 15 jersey. Just think, it would be a very limited edition.

That's a nice twist. But a lot of players, including Beckham are very attached to their numbers. And as respectful as he may be, he likes himself enough to stick up for his number.

The Sox have unofficially retired it in memory of former hitting coach Charlie Lau, who died of cancer after the 1983 season.

It's been unofficially retired for the late Charlie Lau. He was the hitting coach for the '83 team and died of cancer prior to the '84 season.

EDIT: Oops. didn't see that someone had answered already.

As has been said upthread, I think Charlie would approve, considering the approach Beckham takes to each at-bat.

I do agree that the swing Beckham uses is one that Charlie would approve as it is a very level swing. However, Charlie's family should have a say on this one and then it's up to the Chairman.

I'm wondering if White Sox Marketing Dept. politely asked Mr. Rios if he would mind selecting a different number. The giftshops at The Cell are now overflowing with Beckham #15 jerseys and jersey Ts. I also see a lot of people at the ballpark with those jerseys as well. It's a nice gesture on the part of Alex Rios to the team and to Beckham to let the rookie keep his number. Traditional baseball etiquette usually dictates the rookie coughs up his number to the veteran.

How about if Rios wore 51 but had Bevington's picture on the back? Any time you can have a Terry Bevington picture in a thread makes a good day even better.

I saw them at one of the stand alone trailers outside the park, but the in-park shops were out of them. They did, however, have Peavy 44 shirts and I saw quite a few of them on peoples backs during the Tribe and Angels series.

I'm not sure if he's in a "one-time" jersey tonight while they have his set made. He might be something else just for tonight.

Can't wait to add a Peavy jersey to the collection.
