Just an observation- Mike McDougal has saved 10 of 11 games for the Nats with a 2.70 ERA even though his WHIP is 1.50 and opponents are hitting a robust .362 against him. He has walked 18 and struck out only 12 in 26 innings. This is truly a crazy game.:?:

That is called having the luck of the Bukvich. Unfortunately, it runs out and you look as bad as you do in person and the stat sheet.
I think this is just another example of why ERA is a worthless stat, but especially worthless for relievers.
At the same time, Mac has shown an uncanny ability to perform for craptacular teams, while spitting the bit for average to above-average teams.

League is nearly irrelevant when talking about relief ERA, especially closer ERA simply because your pitchers aren't batting at this point of the game.

Apparently The Nats have him throwing fastballs exclusively until he gets two strikes on a hitter. Only then is he allowed to throw his slider.
So far it seems to be working.
