According to Merkin, Torres has the inside track. Also, Bartolo seems to be missing again.

Torres deserves another start. Hopefully he can make the most of it.

Can we just cut our losses with Bartolo and let him go already?

ESPN lists him as the starter.

Coop on the pregame show wouldn't confirm Saturday's starter. He said they don't have to decide today. He mentioned Torres, Whisler, and Dan Hudson as possibilities.

Yea, I'd rather have Freddy come back when he's ready than Tub O Goo have any more chances with the organization.

Torres looked pretty decent his last start, so I'm not against this at all.

Dan Hudson? That seems a bit ridiculous.

Agreed. Although I would like to see his stuff since I haven't before.

Torres has definitely earned this and I wanna see him pitch the exact same way again.

There is nothing in the message which indicates that Bart is missing.......

Perhaps, but that what Cooper himself said. This wasn't just something made up or suggested by Cowley or Gonzalez.

It is ridiculous. Torres did the job the last time he got an opportunity. Giving him another start is the right move.

I agree Torres deserves another start, he was impressive against Tampa Bay. Although don't count out Hudson in the future, especially if Torres does not do as well against Cleveland. Today, Hudson was promoted to Charlotte -- his fourth team this season.

Hudson has been terrific in AA. But it just seems a little silly to force him into the heat of the pennant race when there are other pitchers with more experience available.

Let's see if he keeps rolling at Charlotte.

Yeah agreed. I hope he continue to light it up for the rest of the season down there and then next season during spring training he can give the fifth starter slot a go.

Again, I definitely agree we should stick with Torres as long as he remains effective. Hopefully that's the case, because after him, I don't really think we have too many better options. The only one I could really consider before Hudson would be our old buddy Freddy... and that situation is still a complete mystery itself, as it would be imperative to see him shutting them down in AAA as he did for his first rehab start in Bristol.

Hopefully Carlos will make this discussion moot and hold down the 5th spot until Peavy is ready. (And may I just say, it feels awesome typing the phrase "until Peavy is ready". :D:)

He hints at it in a previous update:

Ozzie also says he doesn't know where Bart is:

This has to be it for Bartolo and the Sox. I'm sure Kenny was less than amused last time.

Maybe Kenny can find someone in a waiver deal and in the meantime, Torres has pitched well enough to get a shot.

Some guys can handle it. Richard did fine last year, Buehrle was also brought up on a playoff team.

I think we're going see Hudson this year, especially if Contreras doesn't get his act together.

I think there's no way they can cut Bartolo. There's never been less security at the 5th starter spot than now.

And his starts have been pretty much what a 5th starter does. Sometimes on, sometimes way off.

If Torres fails, there's still two starts where you have no one. Freddy? unready. Carrasco is too valuable in the pen.

I wouldn't have too much trouble cutting Bartolo. He won't pitch until at least September anyway. Peavy will be ready before him, most likely.

Maybe we can get Bart to show up in San Diego and tell them he's Dexter Carter.

On Mully and Hanley yesterday morning he said (paraphrasing) "there's also a kid in AA who has been earning consideration"... That is Dan Hudson.

LOL! But, it seems like getting him to show up anywhere but an All-you-can-eat BBQ joint in North Carolina is really the biggest problem.

:gulp:

Off-topic, but does anyone know why Carter's numbers at Old Dominion were so horrible? I know he was lights-out in A ball(albeit as a 23 year-old dominating 18-20 year olds), but his stats(ODU versus Single A) boggle the mind.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/C/Dexter-Carter.shtml

Carter's collegiate and professional statistics. Even though he is no longer a member of the team, I love pulling for players like this, even if the jump in numbers are suspicious.

Bad mechanics. The Sox cleaned them up.

Torres is indeed starting Saturday if anyone was still wondering. Bobby will also be available Saturday.

Unfortunately, Torres didn't look as good in this start.

If I'm reading the schedule correctly, with an off day coming up, the next time the 5th spot in the rotation will be needed is Aug. 18 vs. the Royals. Will this be the last time the 5th spot is needed before Peavy returns?

A. Cavatica

Torres was not good, but Bartolo's looked worse in some starts this season. They can run him out there for one more. I want no part of Whisler -- if it's not Torres it should be Harrell or Hudson. Though they just promoted Hudson to AAA, why would they demote him to face the Royals?

I'll be interested to see if they use Torres again the next time they need a fifth starter. I can live with a guy getting hit. I don't like it, but I can live with it. One thing I cannot live with is walks. Torres walked six and three of them scored tonight. Not good enough.

I guess it all depends on what the other options are.
