I know we didn't come back from a deficit in the 9th and steal this one, but after two relatively easy outs to open the inning, I figured we were destined for extras for sure. Great AB by Nix to get the ball rolling and Scotty Pods just keeps getting better, waited for his pitch, got it, and crushed it.

Bullpen did a great job.

Beckham did a great job.

TCQ had a good night.

Pods did something special, almost willing this team to victory late. Have to believe that ducksnort double was on Jepsen's mind when he threw the inside fastball that Pods just jumped all over.

I just knew this was going to be a great series, but man what a great beginning and for the Kittens to get spanked by the O's is extra delicious.

Pods and Beckham are quickly becoming one of the Majors best 1-2 combinations... those guys have been putting up great numbers since joining the Sox.

I've said it once and I'll say it again - Beckham is going to be an All-Star next season... the guy just knows how the hit and is doing much better in his 3B role! What a season he has already, now hitting .316 as a rookie, amazing!

Go get 'em tomorrow, the AL's best are bringing out the best in the Sox - they must have been pissed about losing six of seven to the tops in the AL Central, but they are doing well against the other AL leaders!

Corasco and his high stir ups kick ass! Great job late in the game. Not to piss on the parade, but cut Contreras' ass as soon as Peavy is able to pitch! He is the most frustrating pitcher to watch unless it's one of his 5 unhittable starts a year.

I have no clue why but I have a soft spot for Contreras.

I adore him. From what I've read he's one one of the nicest guys off the field. Coupled with how hard he's worked this year, and all the booing he's received, I root hard for him to succeed.

I've mentioned this story before, but here it is again. Garfien told a story about Jose returning from the DL last year (his first stint). He said how Jose lit up like a little kid when he talked about going back and pitching again, and how excited he was to have Griffey on the team.

Also, heard a story about how Adam Russell asked him for pitching tips, and Jose obliged and also invited him to dinner with his family. I love this man.

I can't see any realistic scenario where Jose is back next season. I grant all of you, he's a very hard worked and deserves credit for that, but he simply can't pitch well anymore and basically hasn't since the second half of 2006.

Wait a minute, I could see giving him a shot I guess (a year removed from his injury) if he re-signs with the Sox for a low base salary and a lot of incentives but all things considered I'd just as soon see Kenny go out and get a .500 starter for the 5th slot who isn't, who knows how old.

Jose would do anything to help this team. An absolute class act, and it's really tough to watch him struggle the way he has. The crap he gets really rubs me the wrong way. The fact that he doesn't have it anymore after everything he did for the organization is no reason to boo him. It's not like he isn't giving it everything he has.

Still though...it's impossible to ignore that he doesn't have it anymore. The Sox just can't afford to keep him after this season, not with what they'd need to pay him.

I don't understand how the announced crowd was only abit over 30K

The upper deck filled in funny with the $9 seats. Behind the plate from 1st base to 3rd it was only about half full. down the lines upstairs it was packed. A few sections in the corners downstairs were lightly sold, too.

I was at the game he pitched that sent him to the minors. The level of booing was horrible. It broke my heart. The man has busted his ass to get back faster than projected. He clearly wants to do well, yet the fans seem so quick to turn on him.

Am I thrilled with how he has pitched? No, but do I think he should be vilified as if he killed Santa Claus? Clearly not. Some of our "fans" act like absolule *******s when it comes to Jose.

Doesn't the CBA keep the Sox from signing Jose for < 80% of what he made this season?

http://baseball.suite101.com/article.cfm/how_baseball_arbitration_works

I get confused by this too, so perhaps someone can explain this in super simple terms...

Is a player who files for FA still considered "under the control of the team that last employed him" or could a team compete at lower rates once the player files?

Is filing for FA automatic at the end of a contract for a veteran of at least 6 years or can they look at other teams offers while still forcing their last team to offer at least 80%?

For example: After the WS can Jose look at offers from other teams while forcing the Sox to offer at least 80% of this years salary or once he files for FA are they free to offer him any contract at all?

I know that once they agree to aribtration, the 80% rule goes out the window and the two sides are free to compromise in any way they wish.

Would the Sox have to resign Jose and Thome prior to the end of the season to be not bound by the 80% rule? That article seems to imply they cannot do that, but someone said they could.

Can we settle this for us dopes who are confused? Anyone got a firm answer?

A couple of points on a great win:

The White Sox came back from a deficit in the seventh to tie the game. No one hit a home run to tie it. Podsednik hit a two-out bases-empty double and Beckman drove him in with a two-out hit. In the ninth, with the game tied, it was the same thing -- a double by Nix this time and a hit by Podsednik for the win.

I wonder if Angels fans have come to dread playing the White Sox since the 2005 ALCS. That series, of course, turned around on a two-out, none-on strikeout that came around to score to break a ninth-inning tie. There was no controversy about the way Nix reached base in the ninth tonight, altough he seemed to pay homage to Pierzynski's fateful at bat earlier in the game.

Pitching-wise, this was a bullpen win. And for the Angels, it was a bullpen loss. Carrasco came up big, although the one run he gave up could have cost him a loss. Williams came in to get the left-handed hitters and Thornton, the night's designated closer, got the four-out win. It was as if Guillen knew the Sox would score in the ninth.

Complain about the hitting. Complain about the bullpen. Complain that this Sox team has won just three more games than they have lost. But this Sox team is fresh from taking three of four from the Yankees, which had been a red-hot team. And tonight when their starter couldn't find the plate -- when the wild pitches and passed balls exceeded the number of innings he pitched -- the Angels who scored double-digit runs in each of the last three games in the Metrodome could only manage four runs all night.

Complain that as good as the Sox look some nights and other afternoons, they aren't anything special.

But you would be getting it wrong.

I love it when the White Sox win!!!
Did not get to see any of it since I had work, but I saw the highlights and I am happy that Pods and MLB (Major League Beckham) did some great things for us.
Some people were discussing Jose Contreras, and I have been a huge fan of his ,regardless of what he did, since he was traded to the Sox. Not only is he Cuban, but according to my father he dominated the Cuban leagues. Him and "El Duque" were the two best pitchers in Cuban history (Duque for sure, as my dad got to watch him when he was younger- he actually told me that he threw mid 90's with that same curve. How sick is that?!?!). Contreras was either second best or top 5 in Cuban history, at least that is what my cousins told me.
That said, he also LOVES the game, and I am all for people who give everything to the game regardless of what they get back. There are some poeple that amaze you as people, and Jose is definitely one of those.

P.S.

Don't mock my effort with the nickname for Beckham. It doesn't work that well, but I had to say it.

I have to admit,i was one of the stinkholes busting on him in
the Gamethread. But it was painful to watch that.I know he is
trying out there,i know he gives a ****,i know he wants to
contribute in the worst way.You can see the pain in his face
when he feels he has let the team down. But for this year, and
i mean right now,we can't afford those kinds of performances
from him.We don't know when he takes the mound what we are
going to see.And his numbers tell the story.

For what he's done in the past for us,he'll always have a special
place in our hearts but those days are on your dvd sets now.He
can not harness his stuff anymore on most nights. He gets sent
to the minors for a spell and then he comes back strong for a
couple of starts and then falls back again.Tonight was hard to
stomach. He was literally all over the place.AJ spent just as much
time chasing the balls that went to the backstop as he did behind
the plate.I sure hope he figures it out again real soon.We need him
big time the rest of the way.

We were behind the Sox dugout and many of us cheered for Jose when he came out...I did not think the booing was too bad tonite.
He has to get his command back quickly or he will have to sit...I was glad that Ozzie did not wait any longer tonite..he usually does and the hole gets too deep.

Fun game,no doubt about it. Ball was jumping early, then seemed to cool off and did not carry well later, saving the sox on a couple of occasions.
AJ hit the crap outta the ball with nothing to show for it...Lackey and him had an amusing exchange after that ball caught lackey..

Not sure what the heck West was doing warning both sides...everyone in the park knew that Jose had no idea where the ball was going.
Gordo's first inning drive was one of those perfect shots...max distance for him, I have to guess.
His 2 out line drive single was also well smacked..man, he squares it up pretty.
Both Gordo and Pods were so clutch tonite...it is how you win games down the stretch.
Pods double in the 9th was so pretty...deep and well struck..a bit higher and it was right at his world series homer spot..
Just loved his bunt/double...he is so loosey-goosey at the plate these days..anything goes. He struggled on the road vs Twins and Tigers and the Sox floundered...as Pods goes, so goes the Sox..who'd thunk it?

I don't know if they replayed it on T.V. but the ump totally blew that call. Granted it was quite a ways from the ump and we did win the game but at the time I was  as were most of the other people in left field. I ask because I haven't heard anyone else mention it.

This team is better than last year's, I will be sorely disappointed if we don't win this division.

Agreed. Last year's team may have had a better record at this point in the season, but I always felt like last year's team was simply outclassed by the top teams in the AL. I was just glad they won the division and didn't expect them to go far in the playoffs.

This year, I think our lineup and pitching rotation looks MUCH, MUCH more solid and I'll be disappointed if they can't put it all together (like they have over the last 5 games).

Great win yesterday. I'm disappointed in Contreras. Since we have a void in the 5th starter spot for at least the next 3 weeks, I would hope that Jose would step up and be solid for us as a #4. It'll be tough going the next few weeks if we have 2 huge question marks in our rotation!

2 things

1) I have heard Jose Contreras described as "a lovely man" by a number of different people who have met him. Nobody uses that adjective describing a man unless the person was genuinely struck by a person's kindness and gentle nature.

2) Farmer with a great observation - "Beckham looks like he's playing to get to the next league."

2) Farmer with a great observation - "Beckham looks like he's playing to get to the next league."

Great quote. The guy has improved and succeeded on every level. He improved every year at UGA. They send him to the cape, and he dominates the league. He leads his team to the CWS while putting up Golden Spikes numbers, and plays his best ball on the biggest stage. He hit at every level, and the poor guy had a couple of doubters because it took him a week or so to hit at this level.

Was it me, or were his hands absolutely lightening quick on the game tying single? I watched the replay and there a point where you can't even see his bat.
