If he keeps his average where it is and the doubles and RBIs keep coming like they are now ... I think he'd be close.

I couldn't find that thread discussing the best nickname for our rookie phenom. I noticed that "Flash Gordon" is getting some traction and I like it. He even looks a little like Buster Crabbe.

If he keeps up sort of close to what he's been doing, who is going to be close to him by season's end? He's already near the top in a bunch of offensive categories, and he didn't play for 2 months!

This will hopefully be just the first of many awards Bacon gets in his career. The kid just looks like he belongs.

Google hits for queries of the form ' "Player Name" "rookie of the year" ':

Ricky Romero 16800
Brad Bergesen 9870
Rick Porcello 7660
Nolan Reimold 6600
Elvis Andrus 6300
Jeff Niemann 4630
Brett Gardner 4330
Gordon Beckham 4320
Brett Anderson 3760

Beckham's at a disadvantage here because of his late start, but it's probably a good approximation of who's been getting the press.

Edit: updated the numbers. In just a few hours Romero plummeted from first to fifth while everyone else held steady.

Hahahaha- I know everyone has heard it, but I have had a hahaha moment with this for so long that I had to post this once more.

Anywho, Gordon is the real deal and will be a top 5 to top 10 baseball player for years. He IS that talented, whether we realize it or not. I compare him to Michael Young, except 2 times better.

Bergeson and Niemann appear to me as the biggest threats to Beckham in my opinion.

Well deserved Gordonballs, he proved last night that such an award is no jinx. ROY or not it's going to be a pleasure to see this young man play for the Sox for many a year.

Last night's home run was his first at the Cell, so he hasn't really taken advantage of our homer friendly park. Moreover, that bomb would have gone out of any park in baseball.

I love "Flash Gordon"!!!!!!

The question on my mind is where would this team be right now without him? He's had so many big hits already that you could almost say he's carrying the team now. There isn't anyone else I'd want up at the plate right now with the game on the line.

You can't underestimate how much playing well against the Yankees has boosted him in the ROY race. Sad but true.

My only problem with the nickname "Flash Gordon" is it's already popularly associated with this guy: :tgordon:

That's BS. Not that any of that really matters, but Porcello has been getting shelled, Andrus has been consistently solid, but hasn't been a game changer by any stretch of the imagination, Gardner has been hurt and his numbers still aren't great, Reimold has been good. Heck, I'm not too worried, if he continues to play anywhere near the level he is at right now, we'll be talking about AL MVP in two months, not AL Rookie of the Year.
