The Phillies might disagree with you, at least 1-6 (especially if Rollins keeps hitting like he did in July). Things fall off a bit for the Phillies at 7 and 8, but Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Ibanez and Werth is about as good as it gets 1-6.

My fantasy team is very much paying attention. :gulp: Looked like a bad choice after he had altered his swing -- that was most of the problem, anyway -- but wow, has he been good, even before coming over to STL. His BA was .272 July 3. Now it's .314!

Curtis Granderson strikes out to end the threat! Hope Asdrubal comes through again!

A look at the box score may look like Rodney blew the save for the Tigers but in reality the score should have been at least 4-1 at that point. And Clete Thomas misplayed the triple and Granderson wasn't backing him up properly. That game, even though they won, was on the offense. Tigers have the worst offensive team of any team in first place in the month of August in the history of baseball. Pathetic.

Not unlike Ferguson Jenkins or Steve Carlton back in the day. If you didn't get enough runs to win against them in the first inning, you generally didn't have a chance.

Absolutely right. You can point to any of those losses in the 5 game set as well as the most recent roadtrip.

The fastest way to overtake a team is always when you beat them head to head..................like the series coming up at the end of September when a certain Mr. Peavy figures to be back in the rotation.

Bobby Jenks made a bad pitch to Granderson in the bottom of the ninth on 7/25. That is the main reason the Tigers are still in first place. Two-game swing on that pitch.

The Sox have gone a pedestrian 9-9 since the break, yet they've still gained 1.5 games on Detroit.

And in case you're checking schedules, check out the road trip the Tigers have at the end of September. I know many are pointing to the Sox roadtrip to Boston, New York, and the TurdDome, but that roadtrip for Detroit sends them to 3 places where they have a very hard time winning when it matters.

"Bobby Jenks made a bad pitch to Granderson in the bottom of the ninth on 7/25. That is the main reason the Tigers are still in first place. Two-game swing on that pitch."

Ding, ding, ding. We're one terrible 0-2 pitch away from being in a virutal tie for first and a game down in the loss column. It will be interesting to see what the next three days bring with a very good Angels team coming to town. As a fan I look forward to finding out!

It's hard to imagine how the Sox are not running away with this division. Does anyone think the Tiger's pitching will fizzle? It seems time and again they're starters are throwing 110+ pitches an outing to cover the bullpen. In addition, I was looking at the Tiger's lineup for yesterdays game and Cabrera was hitting about .335. The next guy was hitting .264! They're lineup is full of .230-.250 hitters. I know that doesn't tell all the story of the offense, but it sure seems like they'll struggle to score runs.

Both the Tigers and Twins are pretty bad on the road too. Even with the Sox' 1-6 road trip, they still have the best road record in the AL Central. If the Sox can just get out of they're own way, they should win dis ting!

I read a column out of Seattle on the Washburn trade and this particular writer felt like the M's really got over on the Tigers by foisting an expensive free agent to be who is uniquely suited for the M's park which made his great stats misleading...and getting back a couple very solid pitching prospects. He indicated that a huge key to Washburns great numbers was the tremendous outfield defense played by the M's in a pitchers park. He sees Washburn commanding big bucks in his FA year and if the Tigers offer arbitration ,he could command 15 million. If they do not do that, they do not even get draft picks...so overall, it was a rental that costs them a lot of salary for two months, makes them give up French and co. and leaves them with nothing after the two months...

We will see...but I am glad I am not hearing similar reports out of SD on Jake.

He's a flyball pitcher and Seattle has an outstanding outfield defense, but he fits well with the Tigers. They play in a ballpark with similar dimensions, that are condusive to a flyball pitcher, and they have a pretty good defensive outfield themselves.

Hopefully, he comes back down to earth with the Tigers. Like last night. :D:

The thing about Comerica...the ball does fly out to left pretty easy. And as a lefty,Washburn is vulnerable to right handed power hitters as a fly ball pitcher...I see JD,PK and Carlos going deep on that last weekend of the year in Detroit...hopefully.:D:

Also, Detroit's corner outfielders are not great like Seattles.

I have no doubt the Sox will at least win the vast majority of home games they have left against them. However, winning games against the Twins and Tigers isn't a complete imperative. The Yankees are 0-8 against Boston so far this year, yet they hold a 1-1/2 game lead in the division.

Hard to imagine? They still can't pick up the ball consistently. Nix's run at SS comes to mind immediately as does the number of errors for this entire team.

Don't get me wrong, I love optimism especially when you get to this part of the season. But given the timing of when those Twins and Tigers games are (look at the end of September), many are probably going to agree that it IS imperative. In order for the Sox to win the division while losing the majority of those games, they'd need at least a good 5-6 game cushion. Now, since nobody in this division has been able to separate themselves from the others through the first 4 months, there's no reason to believe that anyone will in the last 2 months. Do you really think the Sox can get that much separation in 5-6 weeks? I'd love it if they could, but I'm not seeing it.

I was looking at the schedules for DET, MN, and Chicago. All the makings of a classic race, just too bad the teams are mediocre.

Detroit: 13 of final 16 against MN and Chicago. Even # of home/away, except for a 4 game series @DET with MN.

Minnesota: 10 of final 16 against Chicago and Det. Only 3 of final 12 games at home, closing the season at home against KC.

Chicago: 9 of final 15 against MN and Detroit. 9 straight at home against KC, Twins, and Detroit. End with 6 at Cle and Det.

I think MN will fade away since 9 of their last 12 are on teh road. I don't really see anything positive for them, which means they'll probably be the idiots they have been and take the whole thing.

Positives for Chicago is that the final 6 are away but 3 of htem are against Kerry Wood's Indians. Chicago plays well in Detroit and it could already be decided by then if they do well at home in that 9 game homestand.

If Verlander pitched in the 1970's, he'd be one of those pitchers who'd throw 170 pitches each time out.
He'd basically be Wilbur Wood minus the knuckleball.

I don't think the World realizes how damn good Joe Mauer is.

A catcher leading the AL in BA, OBP, SLG, & OPS :o:

That's amazing.

He won't be there much longer. Twins are most likely moving him to first base. The could probably get a nice haul for Morneau. Or they could choose to make one of them a DH. However, Morneau is damn good defensively and Mauer is such a good athelete I think he could be an above average defensive first baseman.

Curtis Granderson just made the #1 webgem for tonight in the 8th. It's tied at 2 right now into the bottom of the 8th.

Does Comerica have the deepest CF wall? I think the Detroit announcers said it was 420 ft from home plate :o:.

The Twins are done, they just lost 4 of six "gimme" games in the dome. They are also a very pedestrian 33-27 in Minnesota (same home record as us though :whiner:).

You said it, girl! Someone said this about the division last year, and I think it applies to this year as well: It's not a race to the AL Central finish line, but more like a limp. :redneck

It's even weaker this year. The Sox won 89 games last season. I think 85 is going to be enough this year.

6-2 Texas still hitting in the bottom of the 2nd! With a win tonight, we could be 4.5 games ahead of them, making it much easier to decide who to root for when they face the Tigers.

They had their big chance last week vs Cle and KC at home and went what, 2-4? I would like to think they are done but they always fight and their schedule is the easiest of the three so let's see how bad it gets for them in Texas before playing Chopin's Funeral March.

Gad, I hope they are 10 out for that last series in the hump. Might make things easier.

They are getting no pitching whatsoever. I think the White Sox are the only team they've beaten since the All-Star break.

What's nice about this is that they are playing a FOUR-game series in Texas, not just your standard three-gamer! Then, Texas comes to their place the weekend after next.
