I still think they'll release Colon for not telling Ozzie he was injured this week.

Deal's done and approved from what's being reported.

So, Poreda, Richard, Carter, Russell.

The padres have to be happy with that haul. Obviously, Richard and Poreda and Russell we know.

Dexter Carter's a stud. I'm a little bummed about that one as I would have loved to see him develop a little more. But if Peavy can come back in late August as reported, hopefully we'll be around.

I like this deal.

Poreda is still a borderline starter but could be valuable out of the pen, Richard is a back end starter, Russell is a mediocre reliever. Carter has tons of potential, but he needs a third pitch to remain a starter.

The fact that the organization still has Dan Hudson is huge.

California Sox

I wonder if the Sox got some money in the deal. That contract is horrible.

I assume it's Dexter Carter, right? Not Anthony Carter of W-S.

The Sox had like 6 decent young starting prospects. They just gave up 3 of them, including every left-hander.

Plus, Peavy's not going to be able to pitch during the crucial month of August. It is truly one of the oddest trades I can ever remember.

On the plus side, Ozzie didn't seem too enamored with Poreda or Russell so they were not going to play for us; Richard has a good arm but he's not an elite talent; and Dexter Carter... Well, I'm going to miss Dexter Carter, but getting anything out of a 13th round pick is pretty amazing, I guess.

Sox are sending out confirmation e-mails:

WHITE SOX ACQUIRE ALL-STAR PITCHER JAKE PEAVY FROM SAN DIEGO IN EXCHANGE FOR PITCHERS AARON POREDA, CLAYTON RICHARD, DEXTER CARTER AND ADAM RUSSELL

CHICAGO - The Chicago White Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy, a two-time All-Star and the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard and right-handers Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.

Peavy, 28, is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA (36 ER/81.2 IP), one complete game and 92 strikeouts in 13 starts with the Padres in 2009. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has been on the disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle. At the time he was disabled, Peavy ranked among the NL leaders in starts (T1st), strikeouts (3rd), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (4th, 10.14), opponents average (8th, .228), wins (T8th) and baserunners per 9.0 IP (9th, 10.80).

Over eight major-league seasons (all with the Padres), Peavy has gone 92-68 with a 3.29 ERA (491 ER/1,342.1 IP) and 1,348 strikeouts in 212 starts. He has averaged 9.0 strikeouts per 9.0 IP, while limiting the opposition to a .232 average. Right-handers are hitting just .213 (534-2,509) lifetime against Peavy, fourth-lowest among active pitchers behind Billy Wagner (.186), Trevor Hoffman (.204) and Kerry Wood (.212).
Peavy won 10 or more games each season from 2003-08, has finished with a sub-3.00 ERA four times, struck out 200-plus batters three straight years from 2005-07 and has allowed at least 15 fewer hits than IP in each of his six full campaigns. He led the NL in ERA in 2004 (2.27) and 2007 (2.54).

Peavy leads all NL pitchers with 1,258 strikeouts since the start of the 2003 season, and since 2004 he ranks third in the majors with a 3.02 ERA and sixth with a .228 opponents average.

Peavy was the unanimous selection for the NL Cy Young Award in 2007 when he went 19-6 with a 2.54 ERA (63 ER/223.1 IP) and 240 strikeouts in 34 starts with the Padres. He led the majors in ERA and strikeouts while topping the NL in victories. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he and Randy Johnson (2002) are the only pitchers in the last 22 seasons to lead the NL in wins, ERA and strikeouts in the same season. Peavy's 28 quality starts in 2007 are tied for the second-highest, single-season total in the majors since 2000.

Peavy, who resides in Semmes, Ala., is the Padres all-time leader in strikeouts and double-digit strikeout games (30). He pitched in the postseason for San Diego in 2005-06 and was a member of Team USA in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009. He originally was selected by the Padres in the 15th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft.

Richard, 25, is 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA (46 ER/89.0 IP) in 26 games (14 starts) with the White Sox in 2009. He has allowed two runs on nine hits in 16.0 IP over his last two starts.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Richard went 6-8 with a 5.14 ERA (78 ER/136.2 IP) in 39 games (22 starts) with the Sox from 2008-09.
Poreda, 22, is 3-4 with a 2.72 ERA (17 ER/56.1 IP) and 59 strikeouts in nine starts this season between Class AAA Charlotte Class AA Birmingham. His contract was purchased from Birmingham on June 9, and he went 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (3 ER/11.0 IP) and 12 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances with the Sox before being optioned to Charlotte on July 21.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound left-hander was selected in the first round (25th overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. He was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 Prospect in the Sox organization entering the 2008 season and No. 3 prior to the 2009 campaign.
Carter, 23, is 6-2 with a 3.13 ERA (41 ER/118.0 IP) and 143 strikeouts in 19 starts with Class A Kannapolis in 2009.
Russell, 26, has gone 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA (20 ER/56.1 IP), five saves and 51 strikeouts in 34 relief appearances this season with Charlotte. He went 4-0 with a 5.19 ERA (15 ER/26.0 IP) in 22 relief appearances with the White Sox in 2008.

Wow, I knew something was up, the Sox were too quiet all day. Maybe we stole Heath Bell, too...I can dream.

How is his rehab going? When is he supposed to be back? Who the hell is starting tonight? Torres?

I don't think he can be recalled yet, unless they immediately place Peavy on the DL.

Take it for what it's worth, but this is from Will Carroll's Twitter:
Just got off phone re: Peavy. Told: "Best case? August 15, but that's pushing it. Really pushing it. Hasn't even started throwing for real."

Ugh.

Not that I'm complaining but shouldn't we have given up less this time for Peavy since he's on the DL. Seems we gave up more.
That's what I don't understand. Also, Richard pitched great 2 or 3 starts in a row, so he's at high value.
I don't understand why Williams couldn't negotiate a deal by which he would give up less than last time.

I think the Padres believe that Peavy will be off the DL by 2010.

Again, this is a move that helps us as much for next year as this year. This might be the sort of move where you say "Well this actually might HURT in the short term, but it will help in the long term."

He's still on the DL, and still in your fantasy rotation.

For christ's sake, update your roster. At least when you're playing someone who's good.

I wonder if then we are hoping for a bolster in the mindsets of our players that he's on his way here, and then what it gives us for the next several years. At least one ace if MB decides to hang it up after his contract is up. That would still give us the next two seasons with two aces who can get it done and then each pitch twice in a 7-game series if need be.

How do you know we didn't? There were some PTBNL in the initial deal. I figured Hudson was part of it at that time. If he was and now isn't, that is huge.

From reports did we did give up less. Originally it was Hudson and Carter in the deal IIRC, 2 PTBNL, now it was Russell.

15 day DL retro to 7/9. He can be recalled any time if healthy.

I don't really think it's due to hit in the short term but that's probably just me.

Well his 4 ERA in NL should go up so I'm not too excited yet but glad that KW is making an effort. This really looks good if the 1-4 pitchers all stay here and remain healthy for the next few years.

I would have thought they would have had Torres in town ready to go in case this finally went down, but maybe Jake called the Padres today and said, "About that Sox deal..."

On the other hand, Richard is worth more now today than he was before.

He means that we lose Clayton's spot in the rotation which hurts us.
