Dexter Carter's outing for Kannapolis tonight (7 IP, 14 K) made me scratch my head, because I can't remember the last time a Sox pitcher had that many. What are some notable strikeout performances by Sox pitchers?

Jack Harshman-16 back in the 50s

July 25, 1954 - In the first game of a twin bill at Boston, Sox pitcher Jack Harshman sets the franchise record by striking out 16 Red Sox. Harshman, a converted first baseman, was taught a ‘slip pitch,’ a variation of a palm ball by manager Paul Richards. He’d get the win 5 - 2. The Sox would them sweep the double header taking the second game, 4 - 2.

2. 15 - Ed Cicotte August 26, 1914
Jim Scott June 22, 1913
Ed Walsh August 11, 1910
Ed Walsh October 2, 1908
6. 14 - Jason Bere June 28, 1995
Jason Bere June 13, 1994
Juan Pizarro July 31, 1964
Early Wynn May 1, 1959
Saul Rogovin September 14, 1952
Jim Scott September 27, 1913

So I'm not imagining it. Bere is the only Sox major leaguer pitcher to strike out 14 in my lifetime; and I had just forgotten he had done so.

I can't remember any of our minor leaguers doing it either.

I don't think it's incomprehensible that we'll see a 13+ strike out game from John Danks in the near future. Maybe not this season. But he's definitely got it in him.

Floyd too. He can be unhittable some nights.

Vazquez had at least a few 13 and 12 K starts while he was here. They were all probably against KC though.

Per the 2008 Sox Media Guide:

06.28.07 @ Tampa Bay Rays (7.0 IP, W)- 10Ks
08.26.07 vs. Boston Red Sox (6.0 IP, L)- 10Ks
09.17.07 @ Kansas City Royals (8.0 IP, W)- 13Ks
09.22.07 @ Minnesota Twins (7.0 IP, W)- 11 Ks

And what do we know about this season? There was no pressure to win, which is why he was relatively dominating.

One more piece of strikeout information on Vazquez, again, per the 2008 Media Guide.... He ranks sixth all-time on the White Sox Single-Season Strikeout Leaders list with 213Ks in 2007, behind Ed Walsh (269Ks in 1908, 258Ks in 1910, 255Ks in 1911, 254Ks in 1912) and Gary Peters (215Ks in 1967).

And what was the game with the most walks by Sox pitching?

I wouldn't be surprised if today's game made it up there. 10 walks by our pitchers in a game is pretty embarrassing.

If Danks or Floyd is striking out that many hitters, they probably won't be in the game more than six innings because the White Sox seem to put more weight on pitch count than other teams do. They probably don't get past the sixth inning.

Tom Seaver struck out 19 hitters in a game he pitched for the Mets. He pitched a complete game and struck out the last 10 Padres hitters. He was unhittable that night, but it helped that there wasn't anything on the scoreboard keeping track of the number of pitches he was throwing.

Didn't Contreras gun down 14 in a game in 2006 or 2007?

EDIT: It was 13K's at Cincy in 2006.

Hmm, I wonder if that was just for '07. I found a few more from '06 browsing through his game logs:

8-5-06 @ TOR, 8 IP, W, 13 K
9-21-06 vs. SEA, 7 IP, L, 12 K (sox got shutout)
9-26-06 @ CLE, 7 IP, L, 12 K (again, sox got shutout)

Are you saying that Vazquez had a couple of good games late in 2006?

Let's dig deeper into his September starts:

9/5: a 1-0 loss to the Red Sox - winnable game if the bats had produced
9/10: a 5-2 loss in which Vazquez gave up 2 R on 4 H and 2 BB in 7 IP - winnable game if the bats & pen produce
9/16: a 7-4 loss in which Vazquez gave up 3 R on 5 H and 2 BB in 6 IP - winnable game if the bats and pen produce
9/21: a 9-0 loss to Cleveland, in which Vazquez only gave up two runs in the first seven innings, only to lose it in the eighth
9/26: Vazquez gives up six runs

I'm almost positive that Floyd Bannister struck out 13 in a game against Boston or Baltimore in August of 1983. I went to that game at Old Comiskey and still remember how dominant he was that night.

Jason Bere had some big k games, I think he touched 13-14 one night in 1994.
