Corky Miller traded for Norris Hopper (http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=blog07&plckController=Blog&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&plckPostId=Blog:e57bcc87-152a-4f72-96fb-cc08b1f396efPost:2e753e2c-e048-474c-a297-65be5f06fae9&sid=sitelife.cincinnati.com)

the Corkster...

Seems to be a good move for us - we had no use for Miller - not that we have much use for Hooper either....

Hooper or Hopper?

Norris Hopper. This is the kid who had a great half-season for Cincy a couple years ago, then fell apart? If we can put him back together, not a bad move at all...

He's not a kid. Its nothing for nothing.

I saw him play a few times on TV when the Reds played the Cubs. He is now the next call up if any outfielders go down.

Stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hoppeno01.shtml

Only played a month last year before season ending Tommy John surgery.

He is batting .280 in AAA this season.

Ah, now I see, this kid was a 28 year old rookie from Cincinatti who had a very good season playing part-time, then was given a chance to play even more and sucked. Now that I really think about it, sounds like we got ourselves another DeWayne Wise...

Can't be worse than Wise, can he?
Even though Hopper's a right handed bat, he looks like he has good speed and defense.

YES!!! I know that people have bagged on me for my appreciation for Norris Hopper, but, I really think he will be a good fit for us, especially at The Cell, and all that we lost was a backup catcher in AAA.

I have a strong feeling that this trade will be a steal, that pays dividends.

So, of course this question begs...Is this a precursor to something more?

From what I've seen and remember of him , he does. It looks like it's just injury protection, which is needed. It's nice to see we were able to get anything for Corky.

And in order to change teams, he just had to walk into the opposing clubhouse. It's always fun when that happens.

At least we've got a little more depth in AAA in case we lose another outfielder.

Nothing for nothing pretty much. Maybe a slight improvement over Wise though.

It's not that he sucked last year, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery after only appearing in 26 games. And he has been a successful high average, high contact, but low walk total, type minor league player. He can run and catch. I can't see him coming up to be a savior or anything, but it's more than I expected for Corky Miller, and as previously stated, adds minor league depth.

The Corkmeister's gone? Well this season is over.

Also, there is a possibility that Flowers might be promoted to AAA sometime soon and room was needed for him. Even though Lucy and Armstrong are still there, they are both terrible and expendable.

While only a slight upgrade, I wouldn't call it "nothing for nothing." KW traded a 33 year old playing a position of surplus for a 30 year old playing a position of need. Now that we have Flowers, Castro, and Phegley to supplement AJ and Lucy on the organizational depth chart, Miller was worthless. On the other hand, a month ago, we were willing to bring up any minor league outfielder with a pulse.

Im surprised we got anything for Corky....and Hopper plays a position of need for us.Glad we got Castro because he is 10 times better than Corky.

No appreciation thread?

KW loves taking other teams' failed prospects. Let's hope Hopper can do something for us.

Fifth OF for a third C, not a big move but better player than I ever thought Corky was worth as someone already said. I think Cole has officially been demoted from "develop as a prospect," to "don't worry about stunting his growth in a limited backup role if that callup is needed," so Corky was easily expendable in the grand scheme of things.

Check out the comments at that link. One of the writers says "Dusty wants to use Corky as a new leadoff hitter."

With tongue firmly in cheek, I'm sure. Looks like they're on to Dusty in Cincinnati.

I agree. This is a typical KW reclamation project, and Wise surely is on notice to produce with this deal.

But I doubt this is a precursor to another deal, since we're thin on MLB-level outfielders even if Quentin is healthy.

Norris Hopper...the love child of Chuck Norris and Dennis Hopper...he must be good.

Seriously his one full season in the bigs he hit .329...considering what we gave up this is a no lose move.

Time for a Corky Miller appreciation thread or just start it here?

Corky....thank you for proving to me you can completely give up on your body and still be a professional athlete.

Anyone have any idea what happened with this deal? I noticed Norris Hopper on the roster on CBS SportsLine's GameDay app.... but he isn't even on the roster on whitesox.com.... so, any ideas?

Yeah, hes been on the gamecast since we picked him up. Apparently CBS lets us have a 26 man active roster!

Not a bad move as we really don't have a need for Corky right now. Hopefully he catches on with Cinci and Mr. Hopper can rekindle something here.
