I did this thread last year (http://whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=103645), and I'm bringing it back. Very early in the process, but hey, at least it can be organized.

Same as last year, and I would greatly appreciate any links regarding signings, anticipated signings, or the returning to school/going to college type. I'll update below as news comes in.

Also signed are Collop, Buch, Ciolli, Colligan, Bayne, Black, Wagner, Negus, Shoemaker, Kayne, Simmons, Tezak, Harughty, Davis, Cummings, Delk, Vaughn, Hamme, Wilson , Cooney, Farotto, Serafin, Casario, Burnside, Lee, Zagyi, and Baines.

I'd feel a lot better if we had more than the one of six HS players we took in the first 17 rounds signed by now, but that is a lot of guys signed with Thompson, and Morgado having reports putting pretty good odds on their signing.

I'd be VERY happy if we can get a few of Thompson, Heidenreich, Hopps, Williams and Goodwin signed.

Top post updated. I can't believe we've got 27 signed and not a single "no" yet! Last year, I think we only had 26 players to sign!

Chaotic - what does "anticipated to sign" mean?

Simply that we've heard positive things, but no official signing has been made. For example, Mitchell's positive comments thus far, Thompson's father's comments, and the "75% chance" of Morgado signing all qualify as "anticipated to sign".

They drafted some tough signs as well. Assuming we get Thompson signed (which sounds likely), I hope that we can get at least 1 of Williams or Goodwin to sign. (Both would be fantastic.)

None of the 27 that signed are actually real people. The Sox are just writing random checks for $50K+ to appear "busy."

We're up to 31 without a single draftee declining yet. While the records aren't readily available (to my knowledge anyway; the last link DirtySox posted only goes back to the '06 class), I would imagine we're reaching record territory in the number of picks successfully signed.

Granted, they're mostly players in the middle of the class, but if we can somehow sign all of the picks in the first 10 rounds... well, it's too early to tell if we've righted the minor league development ship, but I would definitely feel good about it if we could sign the top picks, considering the progress of the 2008 class thus far.

Interesting read on the two picks of which we have yet to hear anything, Matt Heidenreich and Justin Jones:

http://futuresox.com/frontpage/?p=218

Heidenreich sounds like he could be something good, with him being able to dial up the fastball to 95 mph at such a young age, and with his size (6'6"), he could certainly become something if that curve can continue to develop. It does seem like he's got his share of problems though, with the DUI and all... if we do sign him, I hope we're able to straighten him out.

I like the comment from Blake about him at the bottom of the page. He says he's a friend of Heidenreich and Heidenreich will be the LeBron James of baseball once he starts working on a game he's never tried to play (though, my guess, and this is just a guess, is that's a bit of an exaggeration).

I really hope we sign Justin Jones, I watched an interview with him and he is very cerebral and articulate for a kid coming out of high school. He has that Barry Zito vibe (hopefully minus the cheesy guitar playing) that translates to good poise on the mound.

It would be great to sign Dane Williams to really fortify our pitching depth in the minors. I imagine that signing Goodwin is a remote possibility, but hopefully they give him the Jordan Danks treatment and make a convincing sales pitch to sign him, if only to leave a good impression two years from now when he's draft eligible again.

It's pretty impressive that they've been able to get so many of the picks signed.

I really hope the Sox make Goodwin an offer he can't refuse, there's a lot of talent in this draft (IMO) and adding a guy like him in the 17th round makes this an A+ draft and really shows that the Sox are committed to taking high ceiling guys.

That said, I also was pissed we didn't sign Kyle Long last year, and well, that decision has since worked out (http://deadspin.com/5127241/howie-longs-kid-drunk-busted-headed-to-community-college).

Great to hear! Hopefully they sign him soon and get him on the next plane to Bristol.

Kind of 2nd hand information but my sisters boyfriend is friends with our 36th round pick, Crowley. Originally it sounded like he was a lock to sign, but according to this guy now hes having second thoughts, he wants the education to fall back on. Little back story, the kids dad passed away, and hes very close with his mom. He choose Mizzou over better schools for baseball because of location. He wants to be able to take care of her and wants a fall back plan if baseball does not work. Can't blame him, especially as a round 36 choice it isn't like he will be banking much of a signing bonus.

When is the deadline to sign?

Mr. White Sox
07-10-2009, 09:43 PM
From Wikipedia:

Starting in 2007, the deadline for signing a drafted player is August 15. A selected player who enters a junior college cannot be signed until the conclusion of the school's baseball season. A player who is drafted and does not sign with the club that selected him may be drafted again at a future year's draft, so long as the player is eligible for that year's draft. A club may not select a player again in a subsequent year, unless the player has consented to the re-selection. Still plenty of time.

The one that jumped out at me (ShoelessJoeS, you'll be excited about this) was 37th rounder Joseph Serafin:

3-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 G, 2 GS, 17.0 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 11 K, .109 BAA

Not bad.

If you can get to Mizzou from Morton, you have to really think about it when you consider you are only a 36th round pick. I've updated the original post and flipped Jones (seems likely to sign) and Morgado (may try to improve value in an independent league, could go either way) in light of the update posted at FutureSox:

http://futuresox.com/frontpage/?p=1007

Basically, it looks like we have 2 of the 5 top unsigned nearly in the bag (Thompson and Jones), with a possible 3rd in Morgado. Goodwin and Dane Williams are longshots, as many of us imagined they would be. Anyone have any further information regarding the other nine unsigned picks? The only one of the nine I've seen anything about was what Domeshot filled us in on regarding Crowley.

EDIT: The most effective I've found articles is using Google's news search... I found a subscription required article about the 50th round pick, Kevin Chapman, saying that he's "expected back" to the University of Florida. Good. I didn't want a Gator in our system anyway!

I've moved him into the unsigned column, the first one.

EDIT #2: Make it two. Jordan Yallen (47th) is committed to Gonzaga.

Thompson did go above slot however, although admittedly not by much.

That's easily a team record, no?

Might be. I believe this is the most that the Sox have gotten signed in a while.

Is there even a readily available source that says which picks signed in each year? I can't even find draft results pre-2001, let alone which ones signed.

Just based on the past several years alone, I would imagine it would have to be a record number of picks signed, or at the very worst top 2 or 3. The best thing about the whole situation is the fact that we got both quality and quantity. Obviously, you can say that the quality is far from determined considering the low success rate of prospects panning out, but nonetheless, it's hard not to be excited, even a little bit.

Apologies if this has been covered before, but has anyone kept tabs on the guys who did not sign last year? Were the drafted this year? Did not signing with the Sox help or hurt them?

I know one player that the Sox drafted last year was Kyle Long. IIRC, he ended up having legal troubles, getting kicked out of the University of Florida and ended up at a community college.

Weaver was drafted in the 17th round out of HS. He went to a JC where he had some tendonitis this year. He was not drafted in the 2009 draft. He's hoping to rebound in 2010.

Another one I caught when browsing through The Baseball Cube link Britt Burns posted (thanks, by the way) was Jorden Merry. He really should have signed with us, because his senior year was a complete dud. He ended up falling all the way to the 40th round, where Seattle took him.

This is why I am ok not overpaying HS and young college kids who have proven nothing.

Some updates, for completeness:

Justin Jones expected to attend Cal:

Tyler Williams not expected to sign: http://varsityxtra.freedomblogging.com/2009/08/12/tyler-williams-to-play-baseball-in-college/1545/

And I don't know how I didn't catch this, but apparently 44th round pick Taylor Thompson, a guy we drafted in the 25th round last year, signed at some point and is in Bristol. That brings the class signees to 39.

I'd love to get either Dane Williams or Morgado. I'm not holding my breath.

BA says that Morgado is expected to return to Tennessee:
