View Full Version : What retro uniform would you like to see the Sox wear more often?

I would to see these worn for one game:

Maybe they can do what the Blue Jays and Brewers do every Friday home game, wear a retro uniform. But hey, that's just my wishful thinking.

I'd love it if the Sox wore an appropriate uniform from the decade of their theme nights. For instance, last night was 70s night, so they should have worn a 70s uniform. For 80s night, an 80s uniform, and so on.

Probably not going to happen, but it would certainly make it less of a marketing gimmick and more of a celebration of the decade.

Any former jersey they would wear couldnt be worse than that crap they wore on Saturday night in KC.

I know most people will disagree, but I like the dark blue (or is it black) with the collar.

I thought it was cool when they wore retro uniforms for every Sunday game a few years ago. I'd like a return of that policy. It certainly would not be worse than the alternate jersey.

The pants just seemed to be a bad fit, kind of like bloomers as Hawk or Stoney said, but that was the way they were worn back then - wide in the legs.

I like the idea of a decade by decade approach, but didn't Brooks Boyer say they only do throwbacks days commemorating teams that won something? If that's the case, not much coming from the 70s any time soon.

I liked those uniforms, too. I'm thinking of buying the jersey.

I liked the unis themselves, but the striped hats were the proverbial straw what snapped the dromedary's spine--too much!

I'd like to see Sox throwbacks a little more often as well, although I'll admit I have little use for either the late 70s Veeck unis or Reinsdorf's tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers-look from 86-90.

Paying respect to the Negro League teams is a touch of class, however those particular uniforms were nasty. Just because they are old doesn't make them good. (Just like an early 70s Ford Pinto)

He also indicated that it must represent something special, thus the 83 throwbacks (division championship) we've seen a few times.

He also indicated that the SOX must submit the request a few years in advance to MLB so I'm sure they give it enough thought ahead of time.

Personally, I think the SOX should have the fans vote and then try to incorporate those requests into the plan for the next few years.

I really like the '59 unis. I would like to see the red pinstripes or the 80's unis on 'decade' nights. Last night was supposed to be 70's night, and all they did was play some 70's music between innings, show some pop trivia, and photoshop the unis onto the players' pictures. It wouldn't really be 'commemorating' anything, just an excuse to bust out some vintage threads.

No offense, but I HATED those uniforms. I hope they took every single one of them, put them in a pile, doused them with gasoline, and set them on fire. Butt-ugly, butt-ugly, butt-ugly. And a fan designed them, too. Yeech. Arrrgh. GAAAAHHHH!!!!

Those uni's were butt-ugly.

Sure they were the "Winning Ugly" togs, but they also were the uni's in the Losing Ugly season of 1984 (still the most painful season that I ever experienced) and The Hawk Wants You! (to play left field!)

I am a big fan of the 1976 uniforms, considering they were worn when I fist saw the Sox on WSNS out in Iowa.

The winning ugly unis are just ok....but the logo throughout that time period is classic.

I never was a fan of the "Winning Ugly" era uniforms. They looked like something you'd see on a box of cereal.

I grew to like the 76-81 uniforms once they went to the white pants with blue stripe full time.

I also would like to see them wear the 71-75 red pin stripes - along with those stirrups showing the logo. If not that, I'd like to see the 39-48 (http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dressed_to_the_nines/detail_page.asp?fileName=al_1939_chicago.gif&Entryid=621) home uniform, which I think is underappreciated. Not to take this thread too far off course....but I was watching the "Twilight" movie with my 13-year old daughter (one of the things we dads have to do), and between the squeals of her and her friends, there was a scene where the vampires went out to play baseball (I know, pretty stupid, but stick with me)! The one vampire gal was wearing a pair of baseball pants/socks that looked very similar to the 76-81 White Sox pants you referenced. I mentioned that to my daughter and her friends and they just rolled their eyes! :D:

(BTW - she filled out the pants a lot better than Pudge or Luzinksi ever did!)

Any former jersey they would wear couldnt be worse than that crap they wore on Saturday night in KC.I liked the American Giant unis, but hated the striped cap. I've seen AG unis from other years, and they had some much better looking caps.

For example, 1928:
http://www.tonydeesnegroleague.com/i//CHICAGO_AMERICAN_GIANTS_CAPS_1928_032.jpg

and this one
http://www.sportsartifacts.com/nlpennhat.JPG apparently from the 1940's.

I know a lot of posters here became Sox fans when they were wearing the "winning ugly" softball uniforms, and thus have a sentimental attachment to them, but they were just horrible. I didn't know a single Sox fan at the time who liked them. And don't get me started on the home cap; the different color front panel thing was one of the worst ideas in the history of baseball uniform design.

I like baseball uniforms to look like baseball uniforms. In my lifetime I've only liked the '49-'63 uniform (I thought it was a mistake to take the red accents out from '64 to '68, and I never saw the '69-70 uniform, as I was in the Army, but the Cubby blue was a bad idea) the red pinstripes and the current ones. Of course I never saw the 1917 for real, but it's a nice looking uniform as well.

I hope they stay with the current one forever, but if they had to change, I'd be happy to see a return to the '59.

'59 and '69 are each cool in different ways. Can I just cast a vote totally against anything involving shorts? It's just viscerally wrong. Charlie Brown can play baseball in shorts because he's perpetually something like eight years old; his shortstop wears only a hat, glove, and collar, and we don't see that in MLB either! It's just as bizarre a thought as basketball played wearing tutus (women's basketball would look equally dumb that way, trust me). Great for some displays of athleticism, wrong venue.

From Brooks interview with WSI:

ML: “Throwback” games and weekends are very popular around major league baseball. Last year the Sox had the chance to honor the 1967, 1972 and 1977 clubs on their 40th, 35th and 30th anniversaries respectively, yet you chose to go in a different direction. This isn’t a criticism but I’m wondering why you didn’t?

BB: “That’s a very fair question. With no disrespect to those teams, some of the best loved in Sox history, they didn’t get to the World Series. To some fans, 1977 for example, just isn’t relevant. We honored the 1959 team with a weekend because they got to the World Series. A few years ago we honored the 20th anniversary of the 1983 team because they were special to a large number of our fans. We’re going to do something again this season on the 25th anniversary but it won’t be as involved. We’ll have a game where we wear the 1983 style uniforms. We’ll also have our ‘halfway to St. Patrick’s Day,’ where we wear the green uniforms and we’ve got the camouflage jerseys on July 4th. We don’t want this to become gimmicky, we want to do things that are relevant to our current fans. (Author’s Note: It was at this point that I tried to sell Brooks on the idea of the red pinstriped era, aka Dick Allen and how special that was to my generation!)

I'm sorry, but I have a rudimentary knowledge of White Sox baseball pre-1992, because that's when I started to acknowledge baseball outside of the pretty colors of the teams.

Why did the Sox keep changing uniforms every 4-5 years. I've always found it silly to look at a picture of players in technicolor, quasi-futuristic uniforms while playing in an old relic of a baseball park. Was it all Veeck, or a combination of factors?

If he wasn't so crazy, I think we would have been one of the teams with a single, classic uniform, that of the 1959 team. Good thing we kind of returned to it 19 years ago.

Veeck was really only responsible for the floppy-collared pajama uniforms, and those were really a kind of a "throwback" to the very early 1900's.

Who knows why they kept making changes. I'm just happy that they've stabilized for quite a while now.

Honestly, while the current look may be "classic", the Sox had a winner with the "Dodger Style" of the late 80's.
