Anyone watching Indians-Yankees on ESPN [two of my most hated teams, but nothing else on]?

First there seemed to a flock of birds flying around the field, now there's a swarm of gnats. Rather odd.

AL Central has a 4-13 record in June so far, and 3 of those wins were intradivision games.

Det: 0-3 (Boston)
Min: 2-1 (Cleveland)
Chi: 1-3 (Oakland)
KC: 0-3 (TB)
Cle: 1-3 (NY/MN)

Ohhhh...I'm no longer a Twins fan. Between you and me, I have become an LA Dodgers fan! They have always known how to play the game right, and that has been displayed on the field. I'm heading down to the mall closest to FDU to purchase a Manny Ramirez jersey.

With that loss, the Twins fall to 30-32, but check out their home and road splits. The Twins are 21-12 at home, but they are an abysmal 9-20 on the road. I know the Twins play much better at home, but mercy!:o::o::o:

In fact, only the Orioles and Nationals (those poor Beltway fans) have worse records on the road this year, with 8-20 and 6-20 records respectively.

Worth mentioning that Detroit beat Pittsburgh tonight.... NO, NOT THAT ONE!

The Tigers beat the Pirates 3-1. The only reason I mention it is that Rick Porcello was 2-3 and had an RBI with each of his 2 hits. Grounder through the hole at SS and a single down the RF line. He didn't look bad at the plate at all. I think being only 2 years out of HS helps a guy because face it, most of these pitchers were probably their HS team's best hitter, at least top 3. But when you see them bat at the ML level they look like the scrub you pull out of the parking lot so that you can have 8 guys on your softball team.

I'm sure that scene was quite weird, with the Kitties winning but everyone following the Pens game/win.

Speaking of the Bucs, I saw a little bit of Andrew McCutchen and good lord, that brotha is fast. He is swinging the stick well too. A writer was reminded of Deion Sanders when he played for the Braves. If he develops Deion's power, then they may get something rolling with him, Tabata, and Alvarez coming up.

KC made it a little interesting in the 9th, putting up a 3 spot, but when you're down by 10...

That actually broke a 4-game winning streak for them, where they swept Cincinnati and took the first game against the D-backs.

I was watching some of that game and in all fairness to him, it appeared the umpire had a teacup for a strike zone. He should've had more K's and his pitch count would have been lower.

The Twinkies getting blasted at the pinball machine by the Pirates put a huge smile on my face.

June records for the AL Central:

Det: 6-10 (3-2 vs. AL Central)
Min: 8-7 (2-1 vs. AL Central)
Chi: 7-9 (3-5 vs. AL Central)
KC: 6-8 (1-2 vs. AL Central)
Cle: 7-9 (5-4 vs. AL Central)

Overall 20-29 against non AL Central teams.

I think it's a 3 team race between the Sox, Tigers, and Twins. Cleveland's a mess and KC just doesn't have guys with the track records yet. The Tigers and Sox have the top tier starters that can carry a team in a weak division and the Twins are the Twins who will never go away. They could be buried like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and find a way to contend.

Depends on the offense and how pitchers #4 and #5 do. They CAN win this. But they could easily fall apart as well.

The quick and dirty on the Tigers:

Verlander and Jackson have been absolute studs. Aubrey Huff said he's never faced a 1-2 like that in his career. They are carrying this team on their backs by not only pitching well but saving the bullpen by going deep into games.

Porcello has exceeded my expectations so far. It wouldn't shock me to see him falter a bit seeing as he's still only 20. The 4 and 5 starters are question marks now.

Cabrera is having an MVP season. His defense has been stellar and he consistently hits. Inge is also flashing the steady glove and showing some power. Those two have been the offensive stars.

The defense has been top notch.

Bullpen has been ok. Rodney's only blown one save (team still won the game) but he still gets too many baserunners to be considered a top closer.

A week ago I thought the team might be out of first place soon. They lost 2 of 3 from Pittsburgh and the first two in St. Louis. Since then they've won 6 in a row against the top 3 NL Central teams.

After yesterday, he's up to 1.173 OPS. No one else in the majors is within 150 points of him in that category. He also pushed his slugging percentage over .700 (.723; only 5 other players in the majors are over .600 - Ibanez, Hawpe, and Fielder in the NL, Zobrist and Branyan in the AL).

Given that he has pretty much no protection in that lineup, I agree; why would you ever pitch to him?

It was probably too much to ask for the Astros to sweep the Tigers. At least the Sox took two out of three this weekend, while Detroit lost two out of three. A net gain of a game for us.

Updated June Records, with AL Central record in parenthesis, followed by the net gain of GB.

Det 13-12 (3-2)
Min 13-11 (2-1) +.5
Chi 12-13 (3-5) -1.5
KC 8-15 (1-2) -4
Cle 9-15 (5-4) -4

Looks like it's still a 3 team race. Could see some movement in July as everybody starts playing each other again.

Sox head to Cleveland for 3, while Detroit goes to Oakland for 3, and Minnesota goes to KC for 3, where they will conveniently miss Greinke.

Get them out of that baggie, and they're not that good. (15-23 on road so far.)

7-1 A's after 7. Roid Boy reaches on error, scoring a run.

Should this lead hold up (and there's no reason to believe it shouldn't), the Tigers' lead is down to 4 over the Twins and Sox.

Tigers and Sox have 86 left, Twins 84.

Porcello maybe showing a little chink in the armor, finally?
We need Jackson and Porcello to come down to earth...it is a long season for guys who have not really been #2 and #3 starters in a rotation on a team in a pennant race.
Our guys have been thru it...their's haven't.

For a team that was 29th in MLB in BA, the A's lit Porcello up pretty good last night. 5 ER and 9 H in 4 1/3, tied for his shortest outing since the Yankees tore him up for 6 ER in 3 2/3 on April 29.

Tonite the A's have Gio taking the bump vs Gallaragga for the tigers.
The A's are throwing 3 lefties vs the tigers in this series and Leyland admitted they struggle vs lefties...cool.
Gio needs to pick it up tonite, he has not been great. But on the plus side, Gallaragga lost 7 straight decisions before he managed to beat the Cubs last week so he is not exactly hot right now. And he gave up 3 runs in the first to the Cubs, who could not take advantage.

Go Gio....I know, too early to scoreboard watch but if the A's could take one or both of these games it really sets the tigers up as they go to play the twinkies in the dome this weekend...time to make a move Sox.
If the twins take care of business this weekend...this race could be tight by all-star break.

It's going to be very interesting to see if they can manipulate their team/park in the new facility to provide a home field advantage like that. The BaggieDome is very unique in that it really does create a homefield advantage. Few parks do that - and even fewer franchises have been able to capitalize on it.
