For apparently violating a contract he signed before coming to the US.

Well at least he didn't shoot anyone with a BB gun...

I think they'll eventually settle on a fair sum. They're just shaking him down.

Looks like they'll get their $500K or whatever that contract said, but I can't see $20MMin damages being awarded

Why only sue for $20 million? Why not sue for $100 billion?

Interesting story. Shouldn't be too rough of a battle though.

How so? We don't know the details behind the case. For all we know, they might actually have sound grounds to sue him. I doubt they'll get $20,000,000, though.

Unless Alexei blew-up the entire island without anyone knowing I don't see how he could owe $20 mil in damages.

Timing couldn't be much worse, just as Alexei was starting to hit he has this issue to deal with. Hopefully it won't be too much of a distraction.

What is it with our short stops and the Dominican Republic?

In the article, Alexei's agent Jaime Torres claims Fernando and Martinez violated some kind of laws. Torres seems to be a pretty respectable agent. I doubt he just bailed on $450,000. I would guess these guys are trying to scam some money out of Alexei now that he's a MLB player.

I did not realize we had so many experts on the Dominican Republic's legal system here.

It's just speculation on an internet forum, nobody is claiming to be "in the know."
That said, I think a little common sense is enough to know that, regardless of whatever stupid laws may exist in the Domincan Republic, a $20 M lawsuit over $400 K is ridiculous.

I don't even know if that would be bad enough..hehe..i think that $20 mil is ridiculous. Sure, he signed a contract, he can pay for what he owes and maybe a little extra just because it's wrong...but twenty million? Way out.
