In case anybody was wondering, look what I found on Wikipedia:

From this, it looks like Hawk is copying Red Barber, who was copying James Thurber.

Since a character in the Thurber story mentions Red Barber, it's clear that Barber didn't get the expression from Thurber. Beware Wikipedia.

"The Catbird Seat" is a great story, by the way. If you want a good laugh get a copy of it in a short-story collection. I still chuckle thinking about after having read it years ago.

"Yessir, Ol Red Barber...........Mercy..........one time we were sitting around chewing the fat during the hot stove league trying to figure out who invented the term "cat bird seat", well each of us was pulling a real Alphonse and Gaston - not wanting to show the other guy up - when Ol' Red got mad at me and for a hot minute I thought it was going to turn into a real pier six brawl."
