My childhood friend from Streator IL has made the big show! Here is a good little article about him from late last year.

My hometown, for as small as it is, has produced two players to make it to the majors since 2005. Adam Shabala (who ironically was my brother's friend) got called up in 2005. Last I heard the Sox signed him in 07 but he never played for Charlotte.

I worked as a sportswriter in Sterling/Rock Falls from 2000-2003. I covered quite a bit of high school baseball during that time because Rock Falls was always right near the top of the NCIC. Streator was a quality team at that time as well, and I remember seeing Zavada pitch a couple times.

Congratulations to him. He's obviously come a long way since his days at Streator High School.

He has a pretty rockin' stache. At BayBears games they put something like "Beware the Stache" on the screen before he comes in.

And ironically enough, the play by play guy for the BayBears is one of my friends.

One of my best friends from 5th grade, his brother was drafted by the Sox last year. I think thats the closest i come to knowing someone in the majors, well my Dad's best friend did have a contract offer from the Pirates years back but he couldn't because of injuries.

Clay got his first appearance last night and walked away with a win! He pitched an inning and struck out two.

Getting some attention already. (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/-iexcl-Viva-Zavada-D-backs-rookie-breaks-into-b;_ylt=Ao80ZaJsutr3aD2h9dWEtt6FCLcF?urn=mlb,165231 )
