Super utility man Ryan Freel is being shopped by the Orioles. He can play both CF and 3B and also has great speed. In my opinion he could help this team out a lot by playing multiple positions and also adding speed that this team really needs. These types of threads usually dont go over well, but does anybody think giving up a mid-level prospect or 2 for Freel would be a good idea?

I don't think Freel can help us at all. We have the speed we need on this team with Getz, Nix, Pods, Ramirez... Getz is doing a great job at leadoff, so I'd say we couldn't really use this guy right now....

I just think he could be what Lillibridge was supposed to be. A utility guy who can play 3B, 2B, and OF and bring speed and hustle to the team. Although Pods has been doing well so far, Freel is a much better defender and can play several positions while Pods really should only play LF or RF.

I wouldn't give up much, but I'd think he was an upgrade over Lillibridge at bat.

It depends on when BA is coming back, how likely he is to continue to play as he has, and what the odds or of Pods being remotely effective... oh - and on what they'd want for him.

That is true...Lillibridge is a bad baseball player.

None of these players have Freel's speed. Lillibridge is embarrassing. Freel would be a distinct upgrade.

No, he shouldn't.

IIRC, didn't Freel get hurt a few years ago when playing for the Reds by running headlong into the fence in center making a catch?

Sounds kinda "grindy" to me.

I miss Darin Erstad.

He would be an upgrade over Lillibridge, but has the durability issue. If we can get him for double nickels on the dime, I'm bout it.

A dumb question on my part:

Is there any chance the Sox could trade for Gathright??

Why, so we can have another bad, fast player? I think we have that covered with Lillibridge, Pods, and Wise.

When did Wise become fast?

Not that I recall. I think the knock on him was people thought he was fast.

The knock on him is that he can't hit, or play much defense. He was 9-for-9 in stolen bases last year. I wouldn't say he's Joey Gathright fast (not many are), but he's still quick. It's the only thing Wise has going for him.

Freel no longer on the market, traded to the Flubs for Gathright.

edit: Just saw that I'm WAY late on this one.

I wonder why Kenny wasn't in on this? We're way short of OF's even when everyone's healthy...

No doubt. Gathright is awful. The Orioles just want as many ex-Cubs as they can possibly acquire. Mcphail really makes you scratch your head.

Freel is pretty versatile, but if I recall very injury prone. The Cubs have had a lot of injuries so he will be a lot more useful than Gathright.

Sorta like Danny Evans and ex-Sox.
