Contreras' performance tonight was abysmal. Richard didn't acquit himself much better. The fifth starter spot is a black hole. I'm grasping at straws here, but would it be worth it to see if Mark Mulder has anything left?

He's worth a shot.

Mulder has an ERA approaching 8.00 and WHIP around 2.00 in his last 120 ML innings spread over the past three years....

Or Pedro.

But as I said the gamethread, I'm not expecting him to lower his demands until the middle of June.

If Dave Duncan couldn't get him right, then I am not sure what chance Coop would have.

I think he's finished. As the last poster said, if Duncan can get Piniero to be servicable and not Mulder, well it may be cooked.

I sometimes picture Mulder being someone who will disappear for a few years and then maybe make a comeback for a few years when he's 35 or 36. I wonder if his arm was just too screwed up and damaged from injuries and surgeries for him to come back on a normal rehab schedule. Maybe a few years down the road after not playing for a long time, his arm will get itself closer to normal, and he'll attempt a successful comeback. But the business with him not being able to pitch from his normal arm slot because it wasn't flexible enough to go there was weird.

What about Ben Sheets, or is he still recovering from injury?

Most likely won't pitch at all this year. And doubt he would sign until he proves that he is healthy.

It's weird that all these pitchers came up at the same time as Mark Buehrle, were better than him for a while, and now are complete wrecks, while Mark Buehrle just keeps trucking along.
