Profile in SI right after he took the GM post. Good stuff.

Wow, that's worth the time to read. The trades that were being suggested back and forth at the time were crazy:

Burns and Fisk to NYY for Cowley, Hassey and Don Baylor

Seaver to Boston for Bob Stanley

Joel Skinner and Bruce Tanner to ATL for Bruce Benedict

I also love the remarks about LaRussa.

However, did anyone else know that he has four kids from another marriage?

I'd figured on the existence of the previous marriage, as Hawk was known to be married during his playing days and when he mentions on-air how long he's been married to Aris, it does not go back that far. But I don't recall him ever mentioning any of those children, though he often speaks of his kids (and grandkids) of this marriage.

Somehow I never focused on the pay cut Hawk took to go from the team's broadcaster to its GM. A hundred thou is no joke now and was way more money in 1986. He must've really wanted it, which sadly did not equate to being very good at it.

I'll say this much for the Hawk: when his time comes, he sure the hell didn't get cheated in this life.
